Korean F3 Superprix to use F1 track
September 5th, 2010
The Korean Formula 3 Superprix will take place at the new Korean International Circuit being constructed for Formula 1 when it returns this winter after a seven-year absence.
The Superprix took place every year from 1999 to 2003 as a second end-of-season F3 showdown twinned with the annual Macau Grand Prix.
In its previous incarnation it was held on a street circuit in Changwon, but it will now take place on the full-length configuration of the nation’s new F1-standard track, organisers have announced.
The event is scheduled for 26-28 November, with a day of testing on Friday followed by qualifying on Saturday and a heat race before the main Superprix on Sunday.
Yung Cho Chung, head of the Korea Auto Valley Operation behind the Korean GP, said: “It is a great privilege for KIC to host the final international Formula 3 race meeting of the year. As the centre for motorsport excellence in South Korea, we will have both the pinnacle of the sport with Formula 1 and the superstars of tomorrow racing at KIC within months of it opening.”
Superprix and Macau organiser Barry Bland believes the original Korean Superprix paved the way for the country’s F1 bid.
“As the first international race meeting ever held in Korea, the Superprix was the catalyst for the development of the sport here, and culminated in the creation of the KIC and the country’s inclusion in the FIA Formula 1 world championship,” said Bland.
Darren Manning, Narain Karthikeyan, Jonathan Cochet, Olivier Pla and Richard Antinucci were Superprix winners in its original form. Future F1 world champions Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton also took part, with Button finishing second to Manning in 1999, and Hamilton taking pole for the final running of the event in 2003 in only his third F3 appearance before crashing in the race.
