Franchitti In Hot Pursuit Of Power
September 7th, 2010
SPARTA, Ky. — When Will Power closes his eyes he must see Dario Franchitti’s No. 10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing IndyCar charging after him. Power probably hears the haunting theme form the movie “Jaws” whenever Franchitti’s name comes to mind.
Franchitti is just 17 points behind Power and with the last two races of the season on oval tracks that definitely favors Franchitti who has 16 IndyCar Series wins on the ovals while Power has never won a race on an oval.
“I’m just going to try to win races because that is going to be a key to winning a championship,” Franchitti said. “I’m chasing Will as hard as I can. We made good inroads last week. It was a great job by the team. As long as I keep doing that and keep getting wins that will help in the championship.”
Franchitti believes Power has been quick on the ovals all season but thought he drove a little reckless last Saturday night.
“He was doing some stuff that was really beyond what you would normally consider safe,” Franchitti said of Power. “He had about three or four accidents — he just wasn’t in them. It was an interesting night.
“We are all pretty fearless to do this style of racing but the control has to be in the driver’s hands. It gets frustrating when people start doing crazy stuff like they did last Saturday night at Chicagoland. It’s tough to police that because those things go on. Some of it is misunderstandings but some of it is malicious, too. It’s a different style of racing than we see on the short ovals. It can be fun but there are people you can trust and others that you can’t and we learn that pretty quickly.”
Franchitti called Power “a man on a mission” last Saturday night before his race was foiled when he ran out of fuel with just four laps left in the race. That dropped Power to a 16th-place finish and saw his 59-point lead cut to 23 points. That gap tightened even more when Franchitti finished fifth and Power eighth.
Franchitti finished ahead of Power for the second time in the last three races and that has put him in position to become a serious threat to win the IZOD IndyCar title for the third time in his career and the second year in a row.
“From where we were after the first lap to where we finished the night, it was an exciting race,” Franchitti said. “We marched our way from 14th to third. We were hovering around the front. We were second, running behind Dan (Wheldon), but Helio (Castroneves) had the fuel to go to the end and we did not. We finished ahead of Will (Power), which was one of the things we needed to achieve, but it would have been nice to have finished a little further up. I enjoyed racing with Tony (Kanaan) up front we were working well together. Everybody was fighting for grip and sliding around a little. It was not a bad night.”
