ISC Tracks Absent From 2011 Sked
September 7th, 2010
SPARTA, Ky. — A 17-race 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series schedule will be announced Friday in Indianapolis with no tracks from International Speedway Corp. expected to be on that season schedule.
IndyCar Series CEO Randy Bernard said last week in Italy that despite a meeting with ISC representatives at Chicagoland Speedway prior to the IndyCar race Aug. 28, it was “too little, too late” to keep any of the ISC tracks on next year’s schedule. ISC officials have squawked about the $1.5 million sanctioning fee that IndyCar is requesting next season.
Among the major changes that will be unveiled is the race at Kentucky Speedway will be moved from Labor Day weekend to Oct. 2, moving from a Saturday night race to a day race on a Sunday. It will be the next to last race of the season. If Bruton Smith, the chairman of Speedway Motorsports, Inc., has his way, the IndyCar Series championship will be decided at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
“Moving this race (Kentucky) to October sounds exciting because that will be the last race before Vegas,” Smith said confidently. “I didn’t say (it was a done deal), but I’m certainly looking forward for the final race of the year for IndyCar to be in Las Vegas. I’m anxiously anticipating and certainly think that will happen. It’s good for both Speedway Motorsports and good for IndyCar to have the final race in Las Vegas — baby!
“I would be extremely disappointed if that did not happen.”
Bernard wants to make the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series championship finale a blockbuster event that would fit in perfectly with the reputation of Las Vegas. He is attempting to get the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Bureau to sponsor the event with a large purse for the championship finale.
