Penske Duo Lead Barber IndyCar Test
February 25th, 2010

LEEDS, Ala. — Sporting new colors for the first time in two decades, Penske Racing teammates Ryan Briscoe and Helio Castroneves topped the time sheets during the first day of the IZOD IndyCar Series test at Barber Motorsports Park.
Driving predominantly black and white color schemes (replacing the familiar red and white colors of Philip Morris USA, which is no longer sponsoring the team) Briscoe toured the 2.3-mile road course in 1:10.50 at 117.438 miles per hour in his No. 6 Team Penske entry to set fast time.
“It’s nice to be at the top of the speed charts,” said Briscoe. “It’s important because it is our only test before the first race, so we’re all comparing times. It’s nice to have the Team Penske cars on top. It’s a great way to start the year.”
Castroneves was right behind Briscoe in the No. 3 Team Penske Dallara, clocking in at 1:10.714 (117.090 mph). Both speeds were set during the afternoon session while the track surface was at its hottest.
“Today was about getting a rhythm. The last time I was in a Team Penske car on a road course was Infineon (last August),” said Castroneves. “You need testing to get your muscles back into shape. Even if you’ve been working out, you still need to get your rhythm back and get to work. That was the goal today. Tomorrow we’ll work on the small details.”
Third fastest behind the Penske duo was Justin Wilson in the Dreyer & Reinbold No. 22 at 1:10.739 (117.049 mph) despite a spin late in the afternoon session.
“The first day in the car was really good. It was a pretty positive day and we kept making improvements,” Wilson said. “All in all, I think that it went well and I’m pleased with P3. I’m getting comfortable in the car and with my new engineer and crew. I’m looking forward to tomorrow. Unfortunately, at the end of the day I just clipped the grass going into turn one and the car snapped around on me. The car isn’t too badly damaged and I’m OK.”
Two teams, Panther Racing and FAZZT Race Team, decided to skip the test at Barber this week. Panther and driver Dan Wheldon opted to instead test at Sebring (Fla.) Int’l Raceway while FAZZT and driver Alex Tagliani decided to not to test at all after viewing the weather forecast for the area in the coming days.
