New Designers Step Into Indy Spotlight
March 8th, 2010
INDIANAPOLIS — Three former Indianapolis 500-winning designers have joined forces to create what they hope will be the next generation Indy car.
Bruce Ashmore, Alan Mertens and Tim Wardrop announced Friday the creation of BAT Engineering. The trio has already announced plans to submit a comprehensive proposal to the Indy Racing League that focuses on creating a new competition platform and bringing new jobs to Indiana.
The group also revealed computer-generated images of its proposed Indy car design, which they say will be fast while providing strength and structure to allow for hard racing among the competitors.
BAT Engineering used computer aided design and computational fluid dynamics software to develop the shape and aerodynamics of the new car.
BAT’s bid is based on a program that would see the design built within a 30-mile radius of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, using American labor. Further details of the concept, which features strength, protected wheels and stable aerodynamics to ensure close racing, will be announced later.
- For the first time in her career, Milka Duno will run the complete IZOD IndyCar Series schedule after joining Dale Coyne Racing for the 2010 season.
This is Duno’s fourth season in IndyCar competition. Last year she competed on a part-time basis with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, earning a best finish of 16th.
“I look forward to competing with Dale Coyne Racing. I’ve had the chance to speak with Dale and the team to discuss goals for the season and we are in harmony in all areas”, said Duno. “For the past three seasons I’ve only run partial schedules and I’m anxious to be competing in all the races this year. Doing so builds momentum and maintains consistency that I feel is a key factor to good results. The full schedule includes seven races at tracks that I have yet to compete on so I will be doing my absolute best to learn these new tracks as quickly as possible. This full season will be challenging — but I’m very thankful for the opportunity.”
Coyne fielded an entry for Justin Wilson in 2009. The Coyne-Wilson combination proved successful as Wilson won at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) Int’l last season. It was the first victory for Coyne in open-wheel competition.
