FIA Glad To Break Into Russian Market
March 8th, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Bernie Ecclestone and F-1 sponsor hunters have been trying to break into the Russian market for decades. And Renault has now pulled off a coup by completing a deal to have branding from Lada, Russia’s leading automotive company, on its cars. Vitaly Petrov, Russia’s first F-1 driver, will also have Lada branding on his overalls and team uniform.
The landmark deal was formally signed in Moscow March 1, and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin gave the agreement his public endorsement.
Having lost title sponsor ING last year, Renault needs some major income and the Lada rubles will help fill the coffers. With Petrov and the link with Lada, the popularity of F-1 will grow in Russia. But it remains to be seen if Ecclestone’s dreams of a Russian Grand Prix get anywhere closer to reality.
- Will there be a protest against McLaren’s rear wing at the first race?
The team invited FIA technical delegate Charlie Whiting to inspect the car at its factory but that visit was delayed. Rival teams have questioned the way the engine cover and air box meld into the rear wing, and are suspicious that it illegally causes the rear wing to “stall” and thus improve straightline speed. No doubt other teams will soon copy McLaren’s design if it’s declared legal.
- The new Campos team has been renamed the Hispania Racing F1 Team — HRT F-1 — after Jose Ramon Carabante bought a majority share in the outfit founded by ex-F1 driver Adrian Campos. The new name was chosen to reflect the team’s Spanish roots. India’s Karun Chandhok and Brazil’s Bruno Senna have been confirmed as the drivers. HRT unveiled its car built by Dallara on Thursday, just eight days before the first practice session of the season.
- Despite StefanGP’s claims it could be ready to race in Bahrain, and that it would present its cars to the world last week, the cars remained where they have always been — in Toyota’s ex-F1 factory in Germany. “We have two 2010 F1 cars here in the workshop,” a source at Toyota told National Speed Sport News. “They are complete and would have been ready to go to Bahrain if required. They are both in plain red livery.”
- Jacques Villeneuve, who had been one of the mooted drivers for StefanGP, says he still hopes to find a ride with another team in 2010 should something open up, and he’s aiming at 2011 as well.
- Which of the new teams will be the fastest? “In Barcelona [testing], Lotus and Virgin were only a good second faster than a GP2 car, for which Dallara has all the data. And according to Dallara’s estimates we should be at least two seconds faster than a GP2 car right from the word go,” said HRT’s Bruno Senna.
- Although eight of the 12 teams are based in England, it’s interesting that only McLaren, Williams and Virgin are officially entered as British teams this season.
The rest are as follows: Red Bull, Austria; Force India, India; HRT, Spain; Mercedes, Germany; Renault, France; Ferrari, Italy; Lotus, Malaysia; Toro Rosso, Italy; Sauber, Switzerland.
F-1 is getting the league of nations flair that A1 GP tried to obtain but with the added bonus of having star drivers besides.
