Schumacher happy with reduced testing

The significant reductions Formula 1 teams have self-imposed on testing have made little difference to the development of the cars, and were a principal factor in convincing Michael Schumacher to return to the sport, according to the seven-time world champion. The teams introduced a ban on in-season testing at the beginning of last year and agreed to a combined four-test pre-season schedule in 2010 in order to further reduce costs.

Jordan tests TOCA engine

Andrew Jordan has given the British Touring Car Championship’s new TOCA-branded turbo engine its maiden runs. Jordan, who will use the powerplant in his Eurotech Racing-run Vauxhall Vectra this season, drove the car in damp conditions at both Snetterton and Rockingham this week.
SUNRED to field sixth Leon for Barth

SUNRED Engineering will run a sixth entry in this year’s World Touring Car Championship for series newcomer Fredy Barth. The 31-year-old Swiss has raced in the German-based SEAT championship since 2004 and finished third in last year’s SEAT Eurocup.

Rosberg fastest as rain hits test

Nico Rosberg topped the timesheets on Saturday morning as rain disrupted the penultimate day of this week’s Formula 1 test at Barcelona in Spain. Although the day started off dry, and Rosberg was able to complete a series of low fuel short runs to set a best time of 1m20.686s on his final effort, everyone’s programme at Barcelona was hit as rain soaked the track shortly before 11am. Rosberg’s short runs offered the first glimpse of the ultimate pace of his Mercedes GP car, with the team having so far limited its running to longer stints during this week’s preparations
Virgin promises major step for Bahrain

Virgin Racing’s technical director Nick Wirth has promised a major upgrade on the VR-01 for the Bahrain Grand Prix – and says he is utterly confident that his squad will start as the best of the new teams. So far in testing Virgin has tended to be faster than fellow newcomer Lotus, while Campos has yet to run its car at all and US F1 is still shrouded in uncertainty
Sutil: New rules will suit my style

Adrian Sutil believes his flexibility when adapting to different track conditions could give him a competitive advantage with the changes to Formula 1′s regulations for 2010. With drivers now forced to start races carrying 150kg of fuel on board, following the ban on refuelling, cars’ handling characteristics are expected to alter significantly as the weight reduces during grands prix.

But the Pole is optimistic that upgrades set to arrive for the final test day tomorrow will bring his team closer to the frontrunners. “We will try to be in the position to fight for the top, but I think it could be difficult to achieve, especially at the beginning of the year,” Kubica said.

Biffle To Own Race Track

LAS VEGAS — Oregon-born NASCAR driver Greg Biffle has become the latest NASCAR driver to be a track owner. Biffle has acquired an interest in Sunset Speedway, a three-eighths-mile dirt track in Banks, Ore., partnering with local resident Jerry Schram. “I’m gonna be part-owner in Sunset Speedway in Banks, Oregon joining the likes of Tony Stewart and some of these other guys, and we’ve also started a late model dirt series in the northwest call the DAA Spec Motor Series presented by Sherwin Williams, which will run 22 events throughout the season,” Biffle said
Aleshin joins Carlin for FR3.5 return

Former Red Bull Junior driver Mikhail Aleshin will return to Formula Renault 3.5 for a fourth season in the category with Carlin this year. The 22-year-old Russian took a hiatus from the series last year, competing in the Formula 2 championship where he claimed third in the standings. Aleshin is the most experienced driver to commit to this season’s FR3.5 championship, having been a front-runner in World Series by Renault between 2006 and 2008.

Car much stronger this year – Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton is confident that McLaren is in a much better position than it was at the start of last season after day two of the final pre-season test at Barcelona. The 25-year-old Briton was only eighth fastest of the 11 runners today, but believes the MP4-25 is a big improvement over the 2009 car. “We’re in a much stronger position than we were last year,” he said.

Lewis Hamilton believes his new team-mate Jenson Button has given McLaren a boost, and says he is working well with his countryman. The 25-year-old was speaking after completing the second day of the Barcelona test this afternoon. His time of 1m22.152s was eighth fastest in today’s results, compared to Button’s 1m23.452s effort yesterday, which was enough to put him fifth
