Kobayashi feels ready to lead team
January 31st, 2011
Kamui Kobayashi is confident he is ready to lead the Sauber team forward in 2011 even though he is only just starting his second full year in Formula 1. The Japanese driver was paired with the experienced Pedro de la Rosa and Nick Heidfeld at Sauber last season, but is now the relative veteran in the team as he has been joined by GP2 runner-up Sergio Perez.
Sauber duo aim to avoid mistakes
January 31st, 2011
Sauber’s young driver pairing Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez say their focus in 2011 will be staying consistent and avoiding mistakes. Having signed GP2 graduate Perez to join Kobayashi – who only has 21 grands prix to his name – Sauber goes into the new season with one of the least experienced driver line-ups on the grid. But Kobayashi feels he has improved a great deal during 2010 and can now deliver his best form more consistently.
Sauber pulls covers off new C30
January 31st, 2011
Sauber has unveiled the new C30 that it hopes will bring it a step forward in pace and deliver the improved reliability that it needs to become a more regular points scorer. The Swiss outfit pulled the covers off its Ferrari-powered car at the Valencia circuit on Monday morning – with the car featuring what is now a standard high nose in F1 and a more slender rear end compared to last year’s challenger.
Schumacher: Simulator issue is minor
January 31st, 2011
Michael Schumacher has played down the problems he suffers in using Formula 1 simulators – by questioning the ultimate benefit of the technology. The seven-time champion made the headlines recently when his Mercedes GP team revealed that he could not use simulators a lot because he suffered motion sickness when doing so. Speaking to the Daily Telegraph about the matter, Schumacher said he was not the only one who struggled to feel comfortable.
Trulli expects to score from the start
January 31st, 2011
Jarno Trulli says he will be in a totally different mindset when he starts the 2011 season with Lotus, as he is confident that the team can aim for points from the outset this year. The veteran Italian endured a tough 2010 campaign, bearing the brunt of Lotus’s reliability teething troubles
Lotus aiming to ‘embarrass’ older teams
January 31st, 2011
Team Lotus should be aiming to compete with Renault and Williams by the end of 2011, according to the team’s chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne. Following the unveiling of the team’s new Renault-powered T128 in Team Lotus Notes online magazine this morning, Gascoyne was bullish about the car’s chances of progressing into the midfield fight this season. “I think when you look at this car, it looks like a front-running car in every area,” he said.
Lotus to start season without KERS
January 31st, 2011
Team Lotus has confirmed that it will not use KERS at the start of the 2011 season, though it reckons it could add the energy recovery device at a later stage if necessary. Chief designer Lewis Butler said his team had decided that KERS would have forced too many compromises in other areas of the design. “The decision not to use KERS made the design job slightly easier, because packaging it in the car is always a bit more of a headache,” he said
Gascoyne: T128 the basis for future cars
January 31st, 2011
Team Lotus’s new Renault-powered T128 challenger has been designed to form the development platform for the squad’s future cars, according to its chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne. While the team’s first car – the T127 – was a conservative design that allowed Lotus to build up the squad’s internal infrastructure through 2010, the new machine has been created from scratch with a far more aggressive approach that Lotus hopes will allow it to develop forward beyond the next season. “With last year’s car and especially the first half of the season it was just an exercise in survival, whereas from the middle of last year it was about building the team up – that’s when we started working on this car,” explained Gascoyne in the company’s Team Lotus Notes online magazine this morning
Lotus says T128 ‘pushes boundaries’
January 31st, 2011
The Lotus design team is confident that the T128 is a massive step forward over its predecessor, the relatively conservative T127 that the squad used to take unofficial ‘top new team’ honours in 2010. Head of R&D and vehicle dynamics Elliot Dason-Barber said the new car’s suspension arrangement was an area where Lotus had made particular gains
Fernandes keen to create new legend
January 31st, 2011
Tony Fernandes hopes his Lotus team’s second Formula 1 car will be the start of a new ‘legend’ that does justice to the legacy of Colin Chapman’s original Lotus operation. Fernandes’ squad remains locked in battle with Renault backer Group Lotus over the right to use the Lotus title in Formula 1, and with no quick resolution achieved in court last week, the season will now start with two teams carrying Lotus Renault branding. Team Lotus launched its 2011 T128 F1 design in its Team Lotus Notes online magazine this morning, and in his introduction, Fernandes said while Chapman was still his inspiration, he hoped his team could now start developing a heritage of its own

January 30th, 2011
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — It was a long 24 hours, but in the end it was favorites that drove into the sunset in the 49th annual Rolex 24 At Daytona that concluded Sunday afternoon at Daytona Int’l Speedway. Defending Grand Am Rolex Series champions Chip Ganassi Racing with lead driver Scott Pruett captured the twice-around-the-clock classic with an impressive one-two-finish in the event at the 3.56-mile road course, despite a yellow flag with only nine minutes remaining and the green flag waving for a one-lap dash to the checkered flag with less than two minutes in the race.

Ganassi’s #01 Riley-Ford MKXI/XX driven by Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas, Joey Hand and Graham Rahal crossed the line just two seconds ahead of its sister car. Scott Dixon, who shared the second Ganassi entry with Juan Pablo, Dario Franchitti and Jamie McMurray, was unable to exploit a late-race safety-car period, which turned the race into a one-lap sprint to the flag.
