Alonso: 2011 tyres will hurt top teams
February 28th, 2011
Fernando Alonso says he is not in favour of the move towards less durable tyres for 2011, as he fears this will end up penalising faster cars. Pirelli has responded to requests to make tyre management a greater factor in grands prix and deliberately designed its new-for-2011 tyres to wear faster than 2010′s Bridgestones, which were often capable of covering an entire race distance. Drivers’ views on the new tyres’ characteristics have been mixed so far , and Alonso said at a Santander event in Madrid today that the likelihood of extra pitstops would cause ‘uncertainty’ in races and hamper the top teams

February 28th, 2011
Davide Rigon’s first test in a Formula 1 Ferrari was postponed today when the Ferrari Driver Academy curtailed its planned Fiorano running due to extremely cold and wet weather.
New BTCC Ford breaks cover
February 28th, 2011
Ford has unveiled the new Focus ST that Arena Motorsport will campaign in the British Touring Car Championship this year. The ‘Global Touring Car’, which is being presented at the Geneva Motorshow, was developed by Arena with technical support from Ford, and is set to have its first test at Oulton Park later this week
Lotus ‘must be ready to act on KERS’
February 28th, 2011
Heikki Kovalainen says Lotus must be ready to add KERS mid-season if the lack of the device is proving too costly. Although Lotus could have used new engine supplier Renault’s energy recovery system, it decided to focus its resources on other areas of the car design rather than dealing with the complex packaging that KERS requires. Kovalainen backs that decision – but believes Lotus should be prepared to change it plans as the year progresses as it suffers against KERS-equipped rivals.
Swiss team in Lamborghini switch
February 28th, 2011
The Swiss Racing Team will continue in the GT1 World Championship with a pair of Lamborghinis this season, as predicted by AUTOSPORT magazine earlier this month. Othmar Welti’s squad had run Nissans in the inaugural series last year, but had a difficult campaign. Sumo Power has now taken over Nissan’s whole four-car entry for 2011, setting up a new arm under the JR Motorsports banner to run the additional cars

Mercedes buyout ‘won’t change team’
February 28th, 2011
No changes will be made to the way that Mercedes GP is run after Daimler AG and Aabar Investments took full control of the team, according to the German firm’s motorsport boss Norbert Haug. It was announced this morning that Mercedes and Aabar had acquired the remaining 24.9 per cent of the team, which was owned by the five shareholders involved in the original management buyout of Honda in 2009 – Ross Brawn, Nick Fry, Caroline McGrory, John Marsden and Nigel Kerr.
James joins BTCC with ES Chevy
February 28th, 2011
Chris James will make his British Touring Car Championship debut this year in a Chevrolet Lacetti run by his own Team ES Racing squad. James, whose Lacetti competed in the Swedish and Scandinavian series last year, said he was “excited, but nervous,” to be moving up to the BTCC, and is keeping a lid on expectations. “I’m not expecting to be mixing it with the likes of [Jason] Plato and [Matt] Neal in my first season,” he said.
Daimler completes team takeover
February 28th, 2011
The Mercedes GP Formula 1 team is now wholly owned by the car manufacturer’s parent company Daimler AG and financial partner Aabar Investments PJS, after the two companies bought out the other shareholders in the Brackley-based operation. In a move that had been widely expected ever since Mercedes-Benz took over the then Brawn GP outfit, Daimler and Aabar have purchased the remaining 24.9 per cent of the outfit that was owned by team management including Ross Brawn and Nick Fry. The new shareholding structure of the team has resulted in Daimler owning 60 per cent, with Aabar owning the remaining 40 per cent.
Gordon ends win drought at Phoenix
February 28th, 2011
Jeff Gordon ended a 66-race win-less streak by beating Kyle Busch to victory in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix. “Pinch me!” said Gordon while jumping off his trademark #24 Chevrolet in Victory Lane after finally getting back to his winning ways, claiming his 83rd career victory one year, 10 months and 22 days after winning for the last time at NASCAR’s top level. The 39-year-old led a race-high 138 laps but following the final restart with 22 laps remaining, he had to chase the leading Toyota of Busch, who passed Tony Stewart for the lead shortly after the green flag waved for the last time.
Renault: Heidfeld already leading team
February 27th, 2011
Renault team boss Eric Boullier says it was obvious from Nick Heidfeld’s first few laps in the car that he was the man the squad needed to lead its 2011 charge in the absence of the injured Robert Kubica. Heidfeld will fill in alongside Vitaly Petrov at Renault until Kubica recovers from the multiple injuries he suffered in a rally crash three weeks ago
Kyle Busch closes on Phoenix sweep
February 27th, 2011
Kyle Busch could make further NASCAR history this weekend by completing a full sweep of victories in its top-level championships at Phoenix in a single weekend, having already dominated in the Trucks and Natiowide Series races at the one-mile oval. On Friday night Busch, driving for his own team KBM, led 107 out of 150 laps on his way to victory in the Truck series event at the wheel of his trademark #18 Toyota Tundra. It was also his 25th victory in the series, out of 87 events contested since 2001
Patrick finishes 17th at Phoenix
February 27th, 2011
Danica Patrick improved on her previous form at Phoenix International Raceway by finishing 17th in Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series event. After an eventful first race at the one-mile Arizona oval last November, Patrick had a smoother run this time around as she continues to build on her stock car experience, while pondering still a possible full-time move from IndyCar. Although Patrick managed to finished the race two positions shy of her top-15 target, she eventually finished three laps down on winner Kyle Busch as the 200 laps saw little incidents and long green-flag periods that did not allow her to recover ground and be in contention further up
Huge crowd for Perez’s Mexico demo
February 26th, 2011
A crowd of between 150,000 and 200,000 greeted Sauber’s Mexican rookie Sergio Perez as he carried out a Formula 1 demonstration in his hometown of Guadalajara today. Perez drove last year’s Sauber C29 on a 1.5-kilometre course through the streets of the city.
Virgin continues Manor GP3 prize test
February 26th, 2011
Virgin Racing will again offer a Formula 1 test to the most successful driver from the affiliated Manor Racing GP3 squad’s line-up this year, the teams have confirmed. As part of a talent development system that will also see Virgin Racing back new karting category Formula KGP, the top scoring driver from Manor’s three-car GP3 team will drive for Virgin in the winter young driver F1 sessions. Last year this prize saw Indonesian teenager Rio Haryanto get his first taste of F1 with Virgin in the Abu Dhabi tests, having taken fifth in the GP3 standings for Manor.
Sauber: Young line-up not a handicap
February 26th, 2011
The lack of Formula 1 experience in Sauber’s driver line-up will not be detrimental to the team’s development efforts, technical director James Key insists, as he praised Kamui Kobayashi’s efforts to step up into a team leader role already. With Kobayashi having only contested 21 grands prix and his new team-mate Sergio Perez fresh from GP2, Sauber is set to have the least experienced driver pairing in the F1 field this year – subject to who Hispania picks to partner Narain Karthikeyan. Last season Kobayashi was able to rely on having veterans Pedro de la Rosa and Nick Heidfeld in the sister car, but he is now Sauber’s primary source of technical feedback
Q and A: Key on Sauber’s progress
February 26th, 2011
James Key was credited with turning Sauber’s form around when he joined the Swiss outfit as technical director early last year, and began a restructuring process that saw the team go from scoring a mere one point in the first eight grands prix of 2010 to ending the team with 44 and eighth in the championship. This season Sauber has what is likely to be Formula 1′s least experienced driver line-up in Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez, and a C30 chassis that has looked quietly promising in testing. Key gave AUTOSPORT the latest on how things are progressing at Sauber
Montoya: Vegas Indy run unlikely
February 25th, 2011
Juan Pablo Montoya thinks it would be logistically impossible for him to attempt to win the IndyCar Series’ $5 million bonus at Las Vegas on the same weekend as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Charlotte in October. The Colombian, who races full-time in Cup for multiple IndyCar title winning team owner Chip Ganassi, has been tipped as one of the favourites to run for the prize that IndyCar is offering for any driver from outside its series who can win the season finale.
Ducati vows to solve GP11′s problems
February 25th, 2011
Ducati team boss Filippo Preziosi is adamant that the squad can resolve the issues that have kept it off the pace so far in winter testing. Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden were both outside the top 10 on the final day of this week’s Sepang test, with the Italian expressing concern about how much he was struggling with chassis set-up on the GP11. But Preziosi feels Ducati’s final Sepang results were unrepresentative, pointing out that the test was disrupted by Rossi having to miss one of the three days through illness
Snegirev makes F2 move for 2011
February 25th, 2011
Russian driver Max Snegirev will switch from British Formula 3 to Formula 2 for the 2011 season. The 23-year-old struggled to break into the top 10 in F3 last year, but ended the season on a stronger note when he returned to Formula Palmer Audi – the series where he had made his racing debut in 2007 – and won a race, before performing well in F2′s winter tests
