‘This is our moment’ declares Gresini
April 30th, 2011
Marco Simoncelli’s team boss Fausto Gresini says his rider is ready to play a big part in this year’s MotoGP championship after coming close to pole position at Estoril today. Although the Italian is yet to finish on the podium in MotoGP, he has been in increasingly impressive form in recent races, leading until crashing in the wet at Jerez earlier this month, and then dominating Friday practice in Portugal this weekend. Simoncelli then looked set for pole before falling when attempting to fight back having been deposed by Jorge Lorenzo

MotoGP rookie Cal Crutchlow was thrilled to qualify eighth on his first visit to Estoril, and to be between his Tech 3 Yamaha team-mate Colin Edwards and series legend Valentino Rossi on the grid. Crutchlow has now qualified eighth, ninth and eighth for his first three MotoGP races after moving up from World Superbikes, and admitted he was thrilled with how his debut campaign was progressing so far.
‘Upset’ Rossi rues front-end issues
April 30th, 2011
Valentino Rossi admitted that his ninth place on the Portuguese Grand Prix grid was significantly below his and Ducati’s expectations, as he blamed a front-end handling issue for the poor result. The former champion had been fourth quickest in Friday practice, but could not match that pace today and will start on row three. “We are very upset about the performance this afternoon and especially about the position, because our target was to fight for the second row, around fifth or sixth place, and we had that potential yesterday,” said Rossi
Lorenzo and Simoncelli in public row
April 30th, 2011
Jorge Lorenzo vehemently criticised Marco Simoncelli in the post-qualifying press conference at Estoril this afternoon as the pair’s dispute over riding ethics escalated. Lorenzo had claimed earlier in the weekend that Simoncelli’s riding style was too aggressive, citing a close call between them in last year’s Valencia finale as an example.

Pedrosa: Fitness promising so far
April 30th, 2011
Dani Pedrosa said his fitness was better than he expected after securing third on the Portuguese Grand Prix grid, making him the fastest of the three factory Honda riders in qualifying. The Spaniard has undergone surgery in recent weeks to remove a plate from his collarbone after issues with a loss of feeling in his arms during races. Though he is still healing after the operation, Pedrosa said so far this weekend he had been pleased with how he was coping – although he admitted that the real test would come in tomorrow’s race.
Simoncelli still confident he can win
April 30th, 2011
Marco Simoncelli still feels a maiden MotoGP victory in the Portuguese Grand Prix is a realistic goal despite missing out on pole due to a crash at the end of qualifying. The Italian looked set to give Gresini its first pole since Sete Gibernau started first in the 2005 season finale at Valencia.
Lorenzo takes first pole of 2011
April 30th, 2011
World champion Jorge Lorenzo took his first pole position of the season in qualifying for the Portuguese Grand Prix, as Marco Simoncelli’s bid for the top spot ended in a crash. Having been fastest in both Friday sessions, Simoncelli looked favourite for pole as he set a dominant pace for the majority of qualifying as well. But Lorenzo edged ahead of the Italian going into the final five minutes, and as Simoncelli tried to respond and earn Gresini a first MotoGP pole in over five years, he had a low-side crash at Turn 7.
