19 years old, Jameson Spies lives in Quartz Hill, California. He grew-up surrounded by racing. His mother raced late models throughout Southern California while his father built and setup the car. He has a passion about all forms of racing and hopes to make a career out of it.
  • Jason Lofing
    iRacing.com Series Writer
Jason is 21 years old and was born and raised in Elk Grove. California. A big time NASCAR fan, he hasn’t missed a race on Sunday in years. Lofing is also a huge San Fransisco Giants fan and tries to take in at least a couple games a year. Other than sim racing, his biggest (and far more expensive!) hobby is photography. Although he is rather new to sim racing, Lofing has already accomplished some pretty impressive results, qualifying for the 2011 iRacing Oval Pro Series in Season 1, 2011, winning the inaugural Landon Cassill Qualifying Challenge and finishing runner-up in the second one.
  • Ray Bryden
    Technical contributor
Ray grew up in Nova Scotia, which means he’s a hockey nut, but in Nova Scotia’s two non-winter months he had to find other diversions, which meant watching F1 racing on weekends with his dad and brothers. Without the resources to get started in racing, he gravitated to computer versions of racing – first Atari games like Pole Position, followed by PC racing games like Indianapolis 500: The Simulation. Dozens of others came and went, until Grand Prix Legends came along and he decided sim-racing was his official hobby. Years were spent enjoying this both offline and online until a few years of fatherhood took priority. When free-time reappeared he heard about iRacing and signed up in 2008 and became so involved in the service that he wrote one of the first books on the subject of sim-racing, iRacing Paddock. When not writing for inRacingNews.com, his main occupation is as a research associate with Saint-Gobain working on advanced ceramic materials.

    Contributing Writer
Patrick Atherton, originally from Adelaide in the state of South Australia, currently resides just outside of Melbourne, Victoria with wife of 17 years and 3 kids. A business manager by profession, but also dabbles with blogging, cartooning and fine art, having been published both as a writer in a short-lived South Australian motorsport yearbook and later as a cartoonist in a niche trade magazine. At the age of 19 he competed in club circuit events in an Austin Healey Sprite, later indulging in sprint karts between 1994 and 2000. Following the move to the State of Victoria he raced Road Race Karts (“Superkarts” as they are known in Australia) in the popular Rotax class, competing at Phillip Island, Oran Park, Mallala, Wakefield Park, Eastern Creek, Calder Park, Sandown and Winton. It was during this time he met former Australian F2 champion and inventor of Australia’s first, and most prolific race simulator rig, Jon Crooke. This culminated in an introduction to Papyrus’ legendary NR2003 simulation, and the subsequent sim racing addiction which brought him to iRacing.
  • Tim Terry
    Contributing Writer
Tim Terry, aka the voice of Maritime stock car racing, fell in love with sim racing in 2004 after he joined the Sim Racing Network crew as a pit reporter. From October 2004 to SRNtv’s closure in June 2007, he’s covered prestigious races and leagues such as the Online 500, FLM Fall 400, Real Racing Online and the DMP Racing League – each as the lead broadcaster for the company. At the same time the wheels started to turn in another direction as he began announcing stock car racing locally. Terry became the assistant announcer at Scotia Speedworld in May 2007 and took over full duties in May 2009 when long-time voice Mike Kaplan retired from the track. Terry also became the series voice of the Parts For Trucks Pro Stock Tour in ’09 and continues to hold down both posts in 2011. He has also announced races for the Pro All Stars Series, Atlantic Open Wheel and Maritime League of Legends tours and has called races at six different Atlantic Canadian tracks. Domenicali ‘still believes’ in title bid

Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali says his squad must keep believing that it can turn the title battle around, despite Fernando Alonso suggesting that Sebastian Vettel is getting out of reach in the championship race after pulling 74 points clear of the Spaniard with victory in Monaco. Vettel has only been beaten once in 2011, while Alonso’s second place in Monte Carlo was only his second podium of the year – leaving the double champion pessimistic

Pirelli: Ban red flag tyre changes

Pirelli has called for a change to the red flag rules in Formula 1 to prevent teams from changing tyres if a race is stopped – after feeling fans were robbed of a great finish to the Monaco Grand Prix. The battle for victory in Monte Carlo was finely poised between Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button in the closing stages of the race, with all three running around on tyres that were at very different stages of their wear life. But with their individual situations set to create a thrilling climax to the race, the battle came to a premature end when a late-race red flag, caused by Vitaly Petrov’s accident, meant they were allowed to change rubber

Tagliani confused by race slump

Alex Tagliani admitted he was puzzled by how his pace tailed off in the Indianapolis 500 after his strong challenge for the lead in the opening stints. The surprise polesitter had maintained his practice and qualifying form at first to fight for the lead with Ganassi’s Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti. But following the third pitstops Tagliani’s Sam Schmidt Motorsports car fell off the pace and he tumbled to 19th place before eventually crashing out

Wheldon thrilled to win for Herta

Dan Wheldon said winning with Indianapolis 500 with his long-time friend Bryan Herta’s young team made his second victory in IndyCar’s premier race particularly sweet. Without a full-time drive for this season, Wheldon teamed up with Bryan Herta Autosport for Indianapolis – which would be only the second ever IndyCar race for the team co-owned by Herta and engineer Steve Newey. The Wheldon/Herta combination was a frontrunner all month, and ended up winning when JR Hildebrand crashed out of the lead at the final corner.

Hildebrand most upset for team

JR Hildebrand said he was more upset for his Panther Racing team and its sponsors than he was sad for himself after crashing out of the Indianapolis 500 lead at the very last corner of the race. The rookie driver looked set to pull off a shock win as he made his last tank of fuel go further than anyone else and emerged in the lead with three laps to go

Drivers still angry over restarts

The IndyCar Series’ double-file restart rule came in for more criticism after the Indianapolis 500, with championship leader Will Power and top-10 finisher Marco Andretti vehement in their condemnation of the system. Indy was the first oval race at which the new format – which has provoked controversy in the road and street races held so far this season – was used, and Power felt the wild racing that it led to after caution periods was completely unsafe. “At the back, it was just unbelievably dangerous,” he said

Kanaan doubts he could have won

Tony Kanaan said he never felt he would be able to win the Indianapolis 500, despite managing to twice charge from the field from outside the top 20 to reach the top six. After a low-key qualifying effort, Kanaan started only 22nd, but he managed to claw his way into sixth during the first two stints. He then lost 20 places at a pitstop when he overshot his pit dodging around Pippa Mann’s Conquest car, before fighting back once again to finally finish fourth

Patrick: Strategy gamble right call

Danica Patrick said she was pleased she gambled on fuel strategy and managed to lead the Indianapolis 500 even though her tactics ultimately did not pay off. The Andretti Autosport driver finished 10th, but had led from lap 179 to 188 as she stayed out hoping that she might be able to stretch her final tank of fuel to the finish. Although she arguably had the pace in the closing stages to take a better result on a conventional strategy, Patrick felt the gamble had been worthwhile.

Servia hoped for last shot at lead

Oriol Servia admitted that he found it hard to be absolutely delighted with sixth in the Indianapolis 500 having had a shot at winning the race. The Newman/Haas driver, who had started from the front row, ran with the lead group all afternoon and was increasingly strong in the closing stages and led for a spell

Ganassi pair puzzled by strategy

Dario Franchitti refused to criticise his Ganassi team over its strategy in the Indianapolis 500, while admitting that he did not fully understand how he had ended up 12th in a race he had looked set to dominate. The defending Indy winner had led by as much as eight seconds at one stage, but pitted from the lead under yellow on lap 163.

Baguette rues lack of yellows

Bertrand Baguette felt it would have only taken a brief full course yellow for him to pull off a shock victory in the Indianapolis 500 for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. The Belgian was making a one-off appearance with Bobby Rahal’s squad, and after running near the lead group all day, tried to extend his fuel mileage in the closing stages and get to the finish without a sixth pitstop

Power relieved to keep points lead

Will Power said the fact that he retained his IndyCar Series points lead was the only comfort he could take from a poor Indianapolis 500 for the Penske team. The championship leader finished only 14th in the series’ premier race, having fallen to the tail of the field when he left his first pitstop with his left rear wheel not properly attached. As well as forcing him to do a lap on three wheels under yellow, the incident also caused brake damage that needed repairs.

Rahal not surprised to reach third

Graham Rahal said he was always confident he had the pace to fight for victory in the Indianapolis 500 despite only starting 30th following a fraught qualifying weekend. Mechanical problems on Pole Day left the Ganassi driver to squeeze into the field on Bump Day, but he charged up the order in the race and eventually finished third. Though fellow Ganassi drivers Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti had seemed like favourites for victory early on, Rahal said he was not surprised that he had ended up being Ganassi’s top finisher.

Harvick grabs Charlotte victory

May 30th, 2011

Kevin Harvick burst through to take a surprise NASCAR Sprint Cup race win at Charlotte in a green-white-chequered flag finish. The race had seemed to be coming down to a dispute between Greg Biffle and Kasey Kahne until a late engine failure for Jimmie Johnson caused a yellow and then a two-lap sprint to the finish – which proved to be a fuel mileage disaster for several night-long frontrunners. Dale Earnhardt Jr emerged with the lead going into the final lap, but also ran out of fuel with victory in sight, as Harvick came through to take the chequered flag ahead of David Ragan and Joey Logano

Wheldon takes dramatic Indy win

Dan Wheldon took an incredible second Indianapolis 500 victory in Bryan Herta Autosport’s second ever IndyCar race as JR Hildebrand crashed at the final corner while on course for a shock rookie win. Panther Racing driver Hildebrand had looked set to pull off a breathtaking win after making his last tank of fuel last a surprising 36 laps, which allowed him to sweep to the front as others pitted. But with the win in sight, Hildebrand unbelievably drifted wide at the final corner of the race and slammed into the wall, crossing the line second in his wrecked car as Wheldon swept past to take the win.

Hamilton met stewards after ‘poor joke’

McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh says the Monaco GP stewards “accepted” Lewis Hamilton’s explanation of his “poor joke” following the Monaco GP. The angry British driver slated the stewards after being penalised during and after the race. When asked by the BBC why he thought the stewards had been paying attention to his driving, he said jokingly: “Maybe it’s because I’m black
