Rossi crew chief to miss Mugello

Valentino Rossi will have a new crew chief for the first time in years in this weekend’s race at Mugello, as Jeremy Burgess will miss the Italian race. Burgess has returned to Australia to be with his wife, who is to undergo a series of medical exams and a possible urgent surgical procedure, according to Ducati. Burgess’s role will be filled by Max Bartolini, who normally works as technical manager

Pirelli chooses hards/softs for Britain

Pirelli has announced that it will take its soft and hard compounds to the British Grand Prix weekend, despite Ferrari’s admitting its chances will be hurt with the use of the latter. Pirelli’s decision means teams will be using the same tyres ran at the Spanish Grand Prix, where Ferrari’s drivers finished a lap down as they struggled with the hard tyres, despite Fernando Alonso leading the race while running with the softs
Nunes, da Costa join Hitech

GP3 racers Pedro Nunes and Antonio Felix da Costa will both join Hitech Racing’s British Formula 3 line-up at the Nurburgring this weekend. Nunes (pictured), who is in his second year of GP3 with ART, previously raced in British F3 as an invitational entrant at the Algarve round in 2009, while da Costa, who ran duel campaigns in GP3 and the F3 Euro Series last season, will be making his British F3 debut
Rossi backs decision to use new bike

Valentino Rossi insists switching to Ducati’s new GP11.1 was the correct call in Assen, despite struggling throughout the weekend and finishing more than 30 seconds behind Ben Spies in the race. While the 2012 chassis and 800cc engine Rossi was provided with by Ducati did not yield instant benefits, the Italian believes the switch was justified as he feels the GP11.1 has a lot more potential performance.
Diffuser ban to cost Red Bull 0.5s

Red Bull’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko says the team will lose half a second per lap with the introduction of a ban on off-throttle blown diffusers from the British Grand Prix. But Marko is adamant the team has taken the right measures to make up for that with new set-ups and aerodynamic updates.
Capirossi ruled out of Mugello race

Loris Capirossi has been ruled out of the Mugello MotoGP race this weekend following his injury in the previous event in Assen. The Pramac rider crashed heavily at the end of qualifying in Assen and was ruled out of the Dutch TT. Although he was hoping to be back in action for his home race this weekend, a medical check-up confirmed the fracture of the ninth and tenth ribs and a distorted AC joint in his shoulder.
Al-Attiyah set to turn back on VW

Scandianavian rally drivers Andreas Mikkelsen and Joonas Lindroos could find themselves at the wheel of a Volkswagen Polo R WRC at the start of the 2013 season if they run well on next month’s Rally Finland in the Skodas the company is using in it’s programme build-up – that’s the promise from VW Motorsport director Kris Nissen. Mikkelsen (Norway) and Lindroos (Finland) are the first two drivers to be selected by Nissen under VW’s young driver assessment programme and more are expected to be tested on the four other European WRC rounds this season
Campos Jr set for Donington return

Adrian Campos Jr plans to return to racing at Donington Park on July 17, almost two months after fracturing two vertebrae in an accident during practice for Auto GP’s opening round at Monza in May. Campos Jr’s rehabilitation has already been progressing faster than expected, and he resumed training almost two months ahead of doctor’s predictions
Gurney: DeltaWing progressing well

American motorsport legend Dan Gurney believes the DeltaWing concept will prove itself after gaining the 56th entry to next year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, and that progress is already being made on the project. Gurney’s All American Racers concern is building the prototype, which was originally designed by Ben Bowlby to be used in the new 2012 IndyCar package. It will be run by ALMS-championship winning team Highcroft Racing in next year’s event

VW enters two Skodas for Rally Finland

The organisers of Rally Finland have received two entries from Volkswagen Motorsport for Andreas Mikkelsen and Joonas Lindroos to drive Skoda Fabia S200s. Next month’s Jyvaskyla-based event will be the first World Rally Championship outing for the Volkswagen team. The German manufacturer is expected to contest the remainder of this year’s WRC season except for September’s Rally Australia.

Red Bull Racing is hopeful that Mark Webber can get himself into a position now to challenge Sebastian Vettel regularly for race victories, on the back of his strong showing in the European Grand Prix. Webber has struggled in the opening phase of the campaign to get the most out of Pirelli’s new tyres – and the only time he has beaten Vettel in qualifying was at the Spanish GP when his team-mate’s pace was hindered by a lack of KERS. However, Webber appeared to make a breakthrough in Valencia last weekend.

Williams appoints Somerville and Gillan

Williams has made the next steps in its ongoing technical rethink by appointing a new head of aerodynamics and a new chief operations engineer. Following the first phase of its regig, which will see technical director Sam Michael and aero chief Jon Tomlinson leave later this year, the team has signed Jason Somerville to take charge of aerodynamics and Mark Gillan to head up operations engineering.
Hamilton not giving up on title yet

Lewis Hamilton has insisted that he remains focused on doing all he can to win the world championship this year, despite having admitted in Valencia on Sunday night that the title fight was all but over. Less than 24 hours after Hamilton suggested that runaway championship leader Sebastian Vettel had ‘pretty much’ guaranteed the title already, the McLaren driver amazingly took a snipe at the media reports of what he had said
