Venturini wins hard-fought race two
July 31st, 2011
Giovanni Venturini withstood heavy and race-long pressure to win in a rain-affected second Auto GP race at Oschersleben. McLaren pair say title hopes rising
July 31st, 2011
McLaren duo Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton say that recent successes for their team and Ferrari have lifted hopes that Sebastian Vettel can be beaten to the world championship this year. Although Vettel still has a comfortable lead in the title standings, he has won only one out of the last four races as both McLaren and Ferrari have closed the performance gap to Red Bull Racing.
Dahlgren aims for podium upset
July 31st, 2011
Robert Dahlgren hopes he can crash the Chevrolet party and put his Volvo C30 in podium contention in today’s World Touring Car Championship races at Oschersleben. Dahlgren has led the fight against Chevrolet so far this weekend, culminating in an outstanding qualifying which saw him line up alongside Yvan Muller on the front row of the grid.
Alonso: McLaren favourite to win
July 31st, 2011
Fernando Alonso has tipped the McLarens as his favourites for victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix – although which of its two drivers succeeds will depend on the run to the first corner, he feels. Despite Sebastian Vettel maintaining Red Bull Racing’s lock-out of pole positions this season at the Hungaroring, McLaren has looked to be a serious threat for victory, with Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button qualifying second and third. And Alonso, who will start from fifth on the grid, thinks it is McLaren that is looking stronger overall than Red Bull Racing.
Kahne keen on Vegas Indy run
July 31st, 2011
Kasey Kahne says it would be a ‘dream’ for him to race in IndyCar as he ponders the possibility of running for the US $5 million prize up for grabs for guest drivers in the IndyCar Series season finale at Las Vegas. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race winner is in the shortlist of drivers who could potentially take on the challenge of beating the IndyCar regulars in October at the 1.5-mile track. The 31-year-old, one of NASCAR’s most popular drivers, says there are still plenty of issues to iron out in order for him to go ahead with his wish of entering the event
Perez expects even better race
July 31st, 2011
Sergio Perez expects Sauber to continue its trend of being more competitive in race trim after earning the best starting position of his career in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix. The 21-year-old Mexican made Q3 for the second time since arriving in Formula 1 and will line up 10th on the grid alongside Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher.
Di Resta aims to beat Mercedes
July 31st, 2011
Paul di Resta has set his sights on beating Mercedes drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg in the Hungarian Grand Prix. Di Resta qualified 11th, two places behind Schumacher and four behind Rosberg. But the Scot believes that he and Force India team-mate Adrian Sutil have the potential to make one less pitstop than the Mercedes pairing
Haryanto takes last-gasp GP3 win
July 31st, 2011
Rio Haryanto capitalised on a late race safety car to steal victory from Nigel Melker in the second GP3 race of the weekend at the Hungaroring. Manor driver Haryanto had charged from ninth on the grid to second by lap eight in the wet conditions, by which time pole-sitter Melker was a long way down the road. The RSC Mucke man had his lead up to 7.9 seconds when the safety car came out on lap 12, after Thomas Hylkema crashed coming out of Turn 2
Ragan takes Brickyard pole
July 30th, 2011
Roush Fenway Racing’s David Ragan claimed pole position for the Brickyard 400 as the team continued its dominance of the Indianapolis weekend. Ragan, who claimed his maiden Sprint Cup win earlier this month at Daytona, beat the early benchmark set by three-time Brickyard 400 winner Jimmie Johnson with a lap of 49.182 seconds at an average speed of 182.994 mph. Red Bull Racing’s Kasey Kahne would later get to within 0.018s of Ragan’s lap, bumping Johnson from the front row of the grid and securing his best start at Indy.
Sims excluded, Bottas leads series
July 30th, 2011
Alexander Sims has been excluded from the first GP3 race at the Hungaroring, handing the championship lead to race winner Valtteri Bottas. Bottas initially moved up to second in the points with his victory, while Sims retained the lead in the standings by coming home fourth. However, the Briton’s Status Grand Prix car was excluded from the race following scrutineering on Saturday evening, where it failed the rear floor height check.
Massa fearing bad start
July 30th, 2011
Felipe Massa fears that starting on the right-hand side of the grid could cost him positions at the start of the Hungarian Grand Prix, despite putting in his best qualifying performance of the year relative to his Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso. The Brazilian qualified ahead of the Spaniard for the first time since last August’s Belgian GP, but with the Hungaroring notoriously dusty off-line he is concerned that a bad start could drop him behind the double world champion
Teams want rethink on revised calendar
July 30th, 2011
Formula 1 teams are set to ask Bernie Ecclestone to rethink his plans for the 2012 calendar amid fears that the end of season run of races will prove a logistical nightmare. As AUTOSPORT exclusively revealed earlier this weekend, Ecclestone has undertaken a major reshuffle of the original schedule that was published by the FIA in June. As well as Bahrain moving to the tail end of the season and Turkey being dropped, the United States Grand Prix in Austin is set to become the penultimate round of the season as part of a back-to-back with Brazil
Webber blames DRS, tyres for sixth
July 30th, 2011
Mark Webber blamed having no DRS and cold tyres for his disappointing qualifying performance ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Australian will start from sixth position, his worst qualifying since the Chinese Grand Prix, after finishing over six tenths off the pace in the final shootout. Webber explained after qualifying that he had done the main straight of his final Q3 run without DRS enabled because of an error when activating it.
Loeb secures Finland victory
July 30th, 2011
Sebastien Loeb has clinched the second Rally Finland victory of his career and stretched his points lead with a superb drive on the 2011 event. The world champion spent the whole weekend battling with his Citroen team-mate Sebastien Ogier and Ford’s Jari-Matti Latvala, but made a crucial break on the final morning. All three used various tactics to try and ensure that they were not running first on the road on Saturday, with Loeb seeming to luck out and end up leading overnight.

Valtteri Bottas sustained race-long pressure from Michael Christensen to take a lights-to-flag victory in the first GP3 race of the weekend at the Hungaroring.

Grosjean wins at Hungaroring
July 30th, 2011
Romain Grosjean took his fifth GP2 win of the season at the Hungaroring after race-long leader Marcus Ericsson was given a drive-through penalty in the closing stages. Ericsson had led the race from the first lap after jumping front row starters Luiz Razia and Luca Filippi in the race to Turn 1. From there the iSport driver controlled the race while AirAsia driver Razia kept third-placed Grosjean at bay in the opening stint.

Paul Hembery: “This qualifying session was one of the most tense of the season, with the final outcome hanging in the balance until the closing seconds. July 30th, 2011
Adrian Sutil was a delighted man after securing eighth place on the grid for the Hungarian Grand Prix, the second time in succession the German has qualified there. “I’m very pleased with my qualifying and it feels great to be starting from eighth for the second race in a row,” said the Force India driver, who scored his best result of the season in last weekend’s German Grand Prix with a sixth place finish. “This morning in final practice things did not look so good because I was struggling with a general lack of grip.
