The 2011 MotoGP season saw the end of the unloved 800cc rules package, and runaway title success for Casey Stoner and Honda. But the headlines were dominated by two Italians – one an established legend struggling for form, the other a potential future legend cut down in his prime – as the tragic death of Marco Simoncelli in Malaysia and Valentino Rossi’s tribulations at Ducati became the stories for which 2011 will be remembered. Al Attiyah on his Dakar defence

Nasser Al Attiyah heads in to the 2012 Dakar as the reigning champion and pre-event favourite, but with lack of works entries from Volkswagen and Mitsubishi he knows this year’s rally could be one of the closest in its history. Moreover the former works VW driver has switched machinery himself for this year’s campaign and is set to drive a Hummer developed by Robbie Gordon’s off-road team. He spoke to AUTOSPORT prior to the event, which begins in earnest on January 1 at Mar del Plata in the south of Argentina
Dakar preview: 2012 event wide open

The 2012 Dakar rally – which starts in Argentina on January 1 – is expected to be one of the most open events in years. While the event has been dominated for a decade by Volkswagen and Mitsubishi’s factory efforts, both of those manufacturers are missing from this year’s entry list so the first privateer winner since Jean-Louis Schlesser in 2000 is on the cards.
Volkswagen praises Sainz legacy

Volkswagen Motorsport director Kris Nissen has praised double world rally champion Carlos Sainz for raising the level of competitiveness of the team. Sainz won Dakar in a VW Race Touareg in 2010 and remains part of the VW setup as it moves into the WRC. Nissen said it was the Spaniard’s professionalism which helped establish VW as such a dominant force on the Dakar, where it took three back-to-back victories.
Newey, Mansell given New Year honours

Red Bull Racing’s chief technical officer Adrian Newey and 1992 Formula 1 world champion Nigel Mansell have been recognised in the 2012 New Year’s Honours list. Newey has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire [OBE], in recognition of services to motorsport.
Patrick Head calls time on F1 career

Patrick Head will tonight walk away from direct involvement in Formula 1 after 34 years active service with the Williams team, having stepped down from the outfit’s board of directors with immediate effect. Head, whose role with Williams was director of engineering, revealed his intention to back away from the sport at the Brazilian Grand Prix , following on from a technical and management restructure prompted by the teams’ worst campaign in its history during 2012.
Yamaha/Petronas partnership ends

Yamaha’s works MotoGP squad will lose its Petronas backing from the 2012 season, bringing a ‘natural conclusion’ to a three-year partnership between the two entities. Petronas, an oil and gas corporation owned by the Malaysian government, joined forces with Yamaha at the start of the 2009 season, although FIAT remained the title sponsor. It met with success immediately, as Valentino Rossi claimed his seventh and to date last MotoGP crown, while Jorge Lorenzo helped secure Yamaha the teams’ crown
Di Resta predicts Force India progress

LADA to make 2012 WTCC return

LADA will return to the FIA World Touring Car Championship in 2012 after parent company AVTOVAZ confirmed plans to contest two rounds with the LADA Granta Sport car. The LADA Sport Team will kick off their participation in the fourth round of the 2012 WTCC calendar, at Budapest’s Hungaroring. LADA will then miss the fifth round at the Salzburgring in Austria, but return for the following round at Estoril at the start of June.
Hayden injured in training accident

Nicky Hayden’s participation in the first MotoGP test of 2012 is in doubt after the American was injured while training in Kentucky.
Regalia joins Campos for Auto GP

Facu Regalia will join the Campos Racing team to compete in next year’s Auto GP championship. The Argentinean driver will race in the series while also competing in the European F3 Open. Regalia had tested for the team earlier this year during a promotional event in Magione and later at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia.
Newey: Red Bull can still improve

Rapax: Young driver line-up cost us

Former GP2 championship-winning team Rapax believes that its decision to take an inexperienced line-up in 2011 led to its fall down the grid. The Italian team won the championship in 2010 with Pastor Maldonado, who then graduated to Formula 1 with Williams.
Stewart: Title fight among best ever

Kubica loss ‘biggest blow’ to Renault

Renault team boss Eric Boullier believes the absence of Robert Kubica was a bigger factor in the squad’s poor 2011 season than the unsuccessful forward-facing exhaust layout. After a promising start to the year, with two podiums in the opening two grands prix, Renault’s season tailed off dramatically and by the end of 2011 it was often struggling to even get into the points, leaving its technical chiefs to admit that the radical exhaust arrangement had hampered the car
MotoGP keen to extend Jerez deal

MotoGP is keen to keep its Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez until at least 2016 after completing a deal to secure the 2012 race at the venue.
