Peterhansel leads despite dune scare
January 13th, 2012
Stephane Peterhansel remains in a comfortable Dakar Rally lead despite losing a lot of time when his X-raid Mini became stuck in sand dunes on today’s Arequipa to Nasca stage. The dunes also caught out Peterhansel’s team-mate and nearest rival Nani Roma, who was therefore only able to gain just under three minutes, so remains 20 minutes behind in the overall standings heading into the final weekend. “As soon as we crossed the first dunes, we went over a crest and behind it was a sink hole, immediately penalising us as we got stuck,” Peterhansel explained.

Third Annual World Cup of iRacing on Tap
by David Phillips on January 13th, 2012
The third annual World Cup of iRacing is nearly upon us. In just 10 days the green flag will wave on a week of spirited international competition among the 25 top qualifiers from iRacing’s 38 geographical clubs. Of those 25 clubs, two dozen will be looking to dethrone two-time World Cup champions DE-AT-CH (Germany/Austria/Switzerland) in a week of road racing (Star Mazda at Spa-Francorchamps) and oval track (Chevrolet Silverado at Michigan International Speedway) competition. The World Cup tournament seeds the 25 qualifying clubs into four groups for the opening round of competition, the Group Championship, which run from January 24-27 with races rotating between road and oval. The top nine road and oval drivers from each club will advance to the Group Finals on January 28, with the top scoring [...]
Daytona Past and Present
by David Phillips on January 13th, 2012
When it comes to Daytona International Speedway, iRacing will soon be offering its members the best of both worlds: Daytona past and Daytona present. Following the 2010 racing season, of course, the famed “Big D” underwent a $20 million resurfacing project. Although the primary focus was the 2.5 mile oval, the Bus Stop chicane and adjoining apron on Daytona’s 3.56 mile road course were also resurfaced. In keeping with its commitment to the accuracy of its digital race circuits, iRacing conducted a total rescan of Daytona following the repaving work and is in the process of rebuilding its version of the track. Although the “new” Daytona International Speedway will be integrated into iRacing’s various online racing series in February, the service will continue to make the “old” Daytona available to [...]
Alfalla Rumbles to Blue Grass Win
by Tim Terry on January 13th, 2012
The 2011 NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Champion Ray Alfalla finally got the monkey off his back Thursday night by scoring his first GSRacing.net Truck Series win of the season in the Mason Baker Designs 150 at Kentucky Speedway. Alfalla started in the last row of the online race and worked his way through traffic, taking the lead for the first and final time on Lap 93 of 100. Thomas Hazard rebounded from a dismal Chase to the GSRacing.net Championship to finish second at Kentucky. Kevin King finished in third, followed by Daniel Pope II and Chase driver Dylan Duval. For the second consecutive race, Hazard led the most laps in a GSRacing.net Truck Series event as he ran up front for a race high 43 laps. Brandon Kettelle entered the [...]

Webb has moved from Formula Renault 3.5 to Indy Lights for this season, when he will race for top team Sam Schmidt Motorsports. He made four starts in the American series last year, and it was after his first appearance that Franchitti advised him to make the switch.

Walker confident of title chance
January 13th, 2012
James Walker believes that the JMW Motorsport Ferrari team is ready to fight for Le Mans Series GTE Pro title in 2012 after finishing second in the standings last year. The former single seater racer joined GT star Rob Bell at the British team last year, and the pair only lost out to the AF Corse duo of Giancarlo Fisichella and Gianmaria Bruni in the title race. Bell has now left the Ferrari fold to join McLaren’s GT project, but Walker believes that the team is ready to fight for the title this year

Shedden ‘ready to win BTCC title’
January 13th, 2012
Gordon Shedden says he feels ready to win a maiden British Touring Car Championship title after narrowly missing out in both 2010 and 2011. The Scot was in contention for the title in both years entering the final round, but lost out on both occasions – with Jason Plato winning the title in 2010 and Shedden’s Honda team-mate Matt Neal pipping him last season.
Neal keen to resume fight with Plato
January 13th, 2012
Matt Neal says he hopes to hit the ground running in his bid to defend his British Touring Car title in 2012 – and that he wants chief rival Jason Plato on the grid. Plato and Neal became the best of enemies following several controversial moments in 2011, including the now famous confrontation at Rockingham. Neal, joined by Plato and his Honda team-mate Gordon Shedden in a lively and convivial three-way on the AUTOSPORT International stage, conceded that the regulations had played his way in 2011 as he beat both men to secure a third BTCC crown.
Surtees urges F1 to help young drivers
January 13th, 2012
John Surtees has called for Formula 1 teams and the FIA to do more to make sure top young drivers aren’t prevented from reaching the pinnacle of the sport due to a lack of money. Speaking on the main stage at AUTOSPORT International to promote the charity set up in memory of his late son Henry, the 1964 world champion said he was disappointed to see the number of drivers buying seats in Formula 1 going up again. “We’ve returned to a situation like in the 1970s where one or two teams – including my own back then – have to take drivers with budgets,” said Surtees.

Insight: Nichols on Ayrton Senna
January 13th, 2012
One of the star attractions of AUTOSPORT International 2012 is a display dedicated to triple Formula 1 world champion Ayrton Senna, and among the cars on that stand is the legendary McLaren-Honda MP4/4 that utterly dominated the 1988 campaign. Its designer, Steve Nichols, paid a visit to AUTOSPORT’s central stage on the second day of the show and shared his memories of that car, its drivers Senna and Alain Prost, and gave a fascinating account into working with both. While this is not strictly a news story, we thought you might enjoy finding out what he had to say on one of Formula 1′s greatest stories…
2D or Not 2D?
by Katier Scott on January 13th, 2012
Is 3D the way forward for sim racing? Probably sim racing’s biggest technology ‘buzz word’ during 2011 was 3D. What with the growth of 3D TV, the vast increase in the number of 3D films being released and 3D’s cause being championed throughout the gaming world, inevitably, 3D is a subject the sim racing world is keeping its eye on, be it in 2 or 3D. 3D is also a technology that visitors to the Autosport International show are getting the chance to sample for themselves, as the VRX simulators running at iRacing.com’s booth at the NEC this weekend are both triple screen, nVidia 3D setups. However, with one setup running in 2D mode to allow spectators to view the racing easier while the other is running in 3D, it’s [...]
McLaren not afraid to take risks
January 13th, 2012
McLaren has not been afraid to take risks with its 2012 car despite suffering a major setback during pre-season testing last year with its unsuccessful ‘octopus’ exhaust system. McLaren Racing managing director Jonathan Neale, speaking in today’s Motorsport Safety Fund Sid Watkins lecture at AUTOSPORT International, insists that the team’s early struggles in 2011 will not force it into taking a more conservative approach with the MP4-27, either in terms of concept or development
