World Cup of iRacing in High Gear

The third annual World Cup of iRacing shifts into high gear this weekend with Saturday’s Regional Annual Club Championship (RACC) Finals and the World Cup Final on Sunday. 25 of iRacing’s 38 geographical clubs qualified for the World Cup of iRacing tournament, which began on Tuesday with the RACC Runoffs consisting of road course competition at Spa-Francorchamps in Star Mazdas and oval track competition at Michigan International Speedway in Chevrolet Silverados. Although two-time World Cup of iRacing champions DE-AT-CH (Germany-Austria-Switzerland) must rate as the favorites, there are two dozen clubs – and hundreds of iRacers – who would like nothing better than to deny the club’s bid for a “three-peat” with a World Cup of their own. Lotus names 2012 F1 challenger

The Lotus F1 team has announced its 2012 challenger will be named the E20 to commemorate the 20th F1 chassis designed at the team’s base in Enstone. Enstone has been the outfit’s base since 1992.

Members of the Red Sox Racing League traveled to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin for the league’s second multi-class race of 2012, “The Kettle Moraine 30 at Road America”. Family, friends, and fans enjoyed the beautiful countryside and attractions near the challenging road course while twenty-four RSR drivers practiced for the race. The track has three long straight sections broken up by several tight turns and high speed corners along a 4.048 mile layout. The track first opened in 1955 and is one of the few road courses in the world which has not changed its original layout. Neal: MG programme boosts BTCC

Reigning British Touring Car champion Matt Neal has welcomed the competition MG’s return will bring to the series. Neal took his third BTCC title last year with Honda Racing, which is currently building its first NGTC-specification Civics. He praised rival Jason Plato, MG and Triple Eight for the programme, which was announced earlier this week

Former Maserati grand prix driver Roberto Mieres has died at the age of 87. Mieres, who started 17 world championship grands prix during the early 1950s, passed away in Uruguay, where he had lived for a number of years
MP and de Jong commit to Auto GP

Dutch team MP Motorsport has committed to a maiden full-time campaign in Auto GP for the 2012 season. The team has already firmed up the first of its two drivers, with Daniel de Jong set to build on his three exploratory race weekends with Auto GP in the series last year. Dutchman de Jong, 19, drove in Formula Renault 2.0 for three seasons with MP before moving into Formula Renault 3.5 last year with Comtec Racing.
West loses Speed Master MotoGP seat

Anthony West has announced that he has been unable to find the funding to return to MotoGP with Speed Master and is now set to retire from racing. The former factory Kawasaki rider had been in line to join graduating Moto2 squad Speed Master to race its CRT bike in MotoGP this year, but announced on his Facebook page today that the deal had fallen through.

Bianchi joins Force India as reserve

Jules Bianchi will be Force India’s reserve driver this year, with the promise of some extensive running on grand prix Fridays. Petrov welcomes more aggressive tyres

Vitaly Petrov says Formula 1 drivers will welcome a move by Pirelli to be more aggressive with its tyres this year. Pirelli unveiled its plans for 2012 during a media launch at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi this week, with the Italian company revealing that it was making the performance gap between compounds much closer to try and make the racing better.

Ireland bosses want ‘big’ event

Circuit of Ireland Rally director Bobby Willis has vowed to bring Ireland’s oldest and most famous motorsport event back to life when it runs as an Intercontinental Rally Challenge round in April. The April 6-7 event was officially launched in Belfast on Thursday, with confirmation that the rally will start with a stage around the shipyards from which the Titanic was launched 100 years ago in April. After what’s certain to be a huge crowd-pleaser in front of the famous Harland and Wolff cranes, the crews will face a further 15 stages centred around Armagh
