Round 2 of the 2012 Season 1 iRacing.com IZOD IndyCar Series rolled into Kentucky Motor Speedway for the Follow @TopSplitIndycar 180. While the online racing series visited the Bluegrass State for the first time last year in broad daylight, this season saw the Dallaras under the lights at the fast and sweeping 1.5 mile speedway. This week drew 42 sim racers to Kentucky, with the the top split featuring 21 drivers and leaving some regular competitors locked-out of the race. Each week the level of competition seems to rise and the minimum iRating required to just make the show increases. New HRT delayed by crash test failure

The new HRT car is set to make its debut in the third and final test of the pre-season after the Spanish squad’s plans were delayed because it didn’t pass all the mandatory crash tests this week.
Sordo leads Sweden superspecial

Mini driver Dani Sordo was quickest on the Karlstad superspecial that opened Rally Sweden this evening. The Spaniard is likely to fall back down the order when the fully-fledged stages commence in the morning, but tonight he beat top Scandinavian driver Mads Ostberg – making his first appearance of the year in the Adapta Ford – to first place by 0.3 seconds. M-Sport Ford’s Ott Tanak is currently third.

Brazilian Mini driver Paulo Nobre will run first on the road through tomorrow’s opening day of Rally Sweden after the drivers chose their starting positions for the first time in the history of the World Rally Championship. The 21 priority seeded drivers made their choice of position in the running order, with the leaders all preferring to run further back on the road – clearly expecting the stage to sweep clear of loose snow on tomorrow’s first day of competition. Qualifying stage winner Jari-Matti Latvala was the first driver to go over the start ramp at the ceremonial start and select his positions – the Finn went for 17th on the road

Brandon Salvatore kicked-off his 2012 Season One NASCAR iRacing.com Tour Modified Series (NiTMS) season with a convincing win at the New Smyrna Speedway, a new venue for the series. Salvatore picked-up right where he left off in 2011, after winning the final two Tour Modified championships to close out the 2011 season. The victory which clinched the week for Salvatore came during a 3718 Strength of Field (SoF) race on Thursday in which the defending champ led all 100 laps of the event. Wide Open Racing teammate Giovanni Mungin was second followed by Untamed Motorsports sim racer and Tour Modified veteran Paul Wisniewski. Derrick Cormier2 and Ray Farlow completed the top five. Grosjean buoyed by Lotus form

Romain Grosjean is upbeat about the performance of the new Lotus E20 after his first day of testing with the car at Jerez on Thursday. The Lotus driver was quickest of those in 2012-spec machinery today, finishing second to Nico Rosberg and ahead of world champion Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull RB8. Grosjean downplayed the times, but said he was very happy with how the new Lotus handles.

FIA invites bids for WRC promotion

Rosberg: New tyres to alter racing

Nico Rosberg is expecting the new Pirelli tyres to play a major role in the type of racing in the 2012 Formula 1 season after his second day of running in the Jerez test. Mercedes has brought its 2011 car to the first pre-season test with the focus on evaluating the new tyres and Rosberg, who ended today fastest, eight tenths ahead of the best 2012 car of Lotus driver Romain Grosjean, believes that Pirelli has achieved the targets that it set itself.

Ford considering tactical approach

Ford team principal Malcolm Wilson says the team is ready to take a tactical approach to this evening’s selection of running order for Rally Sweden. Wilson’s driver Jari-Matti Latvala set the fastest time on the 2.4-mile qualifying stage and will now select his position on the road first of all the priority drivers at this evening’s ceremonial start. There are concerns that some of Ford and Citroen’s customer cars could be slotted in ahead of the main protagonists
