iRacer Profile — Kevin Burris
March 2nd, 2012
Kevin Burris is not content with the status quo. 2011 Season 4 capped his rise to the top of the NASCAR iRacing.com Late Model Tour, as he took the series title over rival Trenton Moriarity on the strength of 15 wins in 23 starts, this after having placed 26th in points in Season 3. So does 2012 Season 1 find him defending his hard-won Late Model crown? Not hardly. After a couple of seasons of near-full body immersion in the NiLMT, the Lillington, NC resident has driven the Monte Carlo in just three official sessions (all practice) since the holidays. Period. Instead, he’s turned his focus to the Class A Chevy Impala, racing in the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series. He hasn’t had the easiest of times making the jump [...]
Stroud Tops Dover
by Tim Doyle on March 2nd, 2012
Week five saw the 2012 Season 1 iRacing.com IZOD IndyCar Series head to Dover International Speedway for the first time ever in series history. With only 22 drivers showing up, it was also the lowest car count of the season. With no official online races ever being scored, it was anyone’s guess who would come out on top at the Monster Mile. In qualifying, Shaun Stroud grabbed the pole with a lap time of 19.452s around the fast one mile oval. On the outside pole was Jonathan Goke, with a best lap of 19.498s, followed closely by Jeffrey Koolbergen (19.501s). Randy Crossno slotted into fourth (19.502s) with Doyle Johnson just another one thousandth of a second behind (19.503s). Very tight! The green flag waved only for action to quickly come [...]
Knaus frustrated by Johnson’s penalty
March 2nd, 2012
Jimmie Johnson’s crew chief Chad Knaus claims his team is under more scrutiny than rivals after the #48 Hendrick entry was penalised following the Daytona 500. On Wednesday NASCAR announced Knaus would be suspended for six races and fined US $100,000 after Johnson’s Chevrolet failed the first technical inspection for the Sprint Cup opener. Johnson was docked 25 points and the team’s car chief got the same suspension as Knaus, as officials deemed the C-posts at the upper-rear bodywork of the car did not conform with the regulation.
Schumacher: Degradation needs work
March 2nd, 2012
Michael Schumacher has revealed that tyre degradation is an area where Mercedes must improve, as well as admitting that some of the team’s chief rivals were getting better mileage out of the Pirelli rubber. Schumacher completed 79 laps during Friday’s testing, setting his best time late in the day, on the first flying lap of one of several short runs on Pirelli’s soft compound tyre. However, in the same eight-lap stint as the German set his quickest time, he lost almost four seconds, the first two seconds lost within five laps
Grosjean pleased with long-run pace
March 2nd, 2012
Romain Grosjean declared himself satisfied with the progress made by the Lotus team after topping the timesheets for the second day in a row at Barcelona on Friday. The Frenchman said that his pace-setting 1m22.614s lap, which was set on a short run on soft Pirellis late on, was a result of “KERS, DRS and enough fuel to do some laps.” But of far more importance to him was the long-run pace of the new E20 following a race simulation on a mixture of soft and hard compounds during the middle of the afternoon.
Sainz tests WRC VW Polo
March 2nd, 2012
Two-time World Rally champion Carlos Sainz has driven Volkswagen’s Polo R WRC for the first time during the car’s maiden gravel test in Spain this week. VW tester Dieter Depping and Sebastien Ogier drove the car in Norway two weeks ago, but Sainz shared seat time in the Polo with Ogier this week.
Vettel not judging RB8 until updates
March 2nd, 2012
Sebastian Vettel expects to have a clearer understanding of the RB8 car he will begin the defence his double world crown with when Red Bull fits a major update package to a new chassis for team-mate Mark Webber to drive at Barcelona on Saturday. Amid speculation that several new teams will put the final upgrades on their cars prior to the Australian Grand Prix opener at Melbourne in a fortnight’s time, Vettel insisted that it would still be difficult to accurately define the pecking order before the first race
Donington Park’s Fearnall dies
March 2nd, 2012
An integral part of Donington Park seemingly forever, Robert Fearnall – who died today (Friday, March 3) – was by no means a one-trick pony. His lifelong passion for motorsport led him to carve a unique niche within it, firstly as a young journalist and historian of rare calibre and later as a management professional.
Fry: Ferrari in reasonable form
March 2nd, 2012
Ferrari technical director Pat Fry believes his team is in ‘reasonable’ shape for the start of the season, although admits that it must keep working hard to improve its position. As the Maranello-based team continues to make progress on its radical F2012, Fry says there remain plenty of issues that need to be solved in the final two days of testing.
Hamilton: McLaren in very good shape
March 2nd, 2012
Lewis Hamilton says McLaren has nothing to fear from rivals’ upgrades as top teams prepare to introduce their final pre-season developments at Barcelona this weekend. Both McLaren and Red Bull are tipped to bring substantial updates to the last two days of 2012 Formula 1 winter testing, but Hamilton reckons his team will be in good shape whatever the opposition does

Loeb: Final leg in Mexico will be tough
March 2nd, 2012
Reigning World Rally champion Sebastien Loeb says the strategy for the final day of next week’s Rally Mexico will be vital to success on the Leon-based event. Sunday’s final loop includes four stages with no service – the fourth of which will be the power stage, offering three bonus points to the fastest driver. Having won the event for the last five years, Loeb is keen to continue that run with Citroen next week
Grosjean fastest again at Barcelona
March 2nd, 2012
Romain Grosjean has become the first driver to go fastest on two separate days in pre-season Formula 1 testing, topping the times on the second day in Barcelona. Having been third fastest in the morning session, Grosjean was busy after lunch, completing a full 60-lap race simulation in the Lotus, using Pirelli’s soft and hard compounds. He backed that up with a series of fast laps, setting the benchmark time of 1m22.614s with just minutes remaining, on a set of soft tyres
Buchberger Best at Daytona
by Tim Terry on March 2nd, 2012
The series runner-up in 2011 Season Four in the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series (NiCCS) was top of the board when it came to the standings for Week Four in the 2012 Season One at the Daytona International Speedway. Brandon Buchberger took the top point total out of Daytona as 2,400 sim racers took to the repaved, virtual high banks to look for super speedway glory in Round Four of the online racing series. Buchberger’s win came during a 4012 Strength of Field (SoF) of race on Tuesday in which he led just nine of the 50 laps en route to the victory. Second place belonged to Frank Kimmel II while Jeremy Harrington, Wes Weidman and pole-sitter Stephen Moore completed the top five. Moore led the most laps in the [...]

by Chris Hall on March 2nd, 2012
The third annual iRacing.com World Championship Grand Prix Series gets underway on Saturday with cash and prizes valued at more than $20,000 on the line, and a live broadast on iRacing.com at 5 PM EST/22:00 GMT. The 16 race series looks set to be its most competitive so far, with several names carrying viable claims to the 2012 title, including inaugural champion Greger Huttu and reigning champion Hugo Luis. The excitement starts at Watkins Glen, a 3.4 mile, eleven-turn course in New York’s scenic Finger Lake region that has been lovingly recreated with millimetre precision on the iRacing Motorsport Simulation service. On the back of similar Fans’ Forums last year in Woking, Montreal, and Milan proving a hit with fans, FOTA is now trying to organise a number of them to coincide with races throughout 2012
