Tony Stewart resisted a charging Jimmie Johnson to claim his 45th NASCAR Sprint Cup career win and his first ever at Las Vegas. The reigning champion was unbeatable on restarts in the decisive stage of the race, taking the lead for good with a bold move after the fifth caution of the day.
Latvala admits being distracted

Ford driver Jari-Matti Latvala has admitted that the crash that cost him third place in Rally Mexico came when he was distracted by Evgeny Novikov’s crashed car. The Finn was setting an incredible pace through the longest stage on the route when he went off the road in the same corner as Novikov – despite being warned about the Russian’s crash by the Ford team.
Loeb wraps up another Mexico win

Sebastien Loeb stretched his World Rally Championship lead by clinching a sixth consecutive Rally Mexico victory. The Frenchman led team-mate Mikko Hirvonen in Citroen’s first one-two of the year, having taken the lead from the Finn mid-way through leg one and then pulled away thereafter.
Latvala forced to retire from Mexico

Jari-Matti Latvala has been forced to retire from Rally Mexico due to damage sustained in his SS22 accident. The Ford driver had continued in seventh place following the crash, but was prevented from starting the next stage as the officials judged that Latvala’s rollcage was damaged
Latvala rolls as Loeb nears victory

Jari-Matti Latvala has tumbled down the Rally Mexico order after rolling with three stages to go. The Ford driver was running third, having already been delayed by broken suspension on Friday and a damaged wheel on Saturday, when he rolled his Fiesta on the 54-kilometre long Guanajuatito stage. Although the car was in good enough shape to continue, Latvala did have to stop and change a puncture, resulting in a delay of over seven minutes.
Muller spins and wins in race two

Yvan Muller completed a perfect start to his World Touring Car Championship title defence with a second victory of the weekend in race two at Monza. The Frenchman’s achievement was remarkable given that he was tapped into a spectacular 360 degree spin by Chevrolet team-mate Rob Huff on lap two. The three factory Cruzes of Muller, Alain Menu and Huff were running in close formation approaching the Rettifilio, in a dice for fifth, when the incident occurred
Horner says Webber back on form

Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner is confident Mark Webber can begin his 2012 Formula 1 campaign much stronger than he started last year. After fighting for the 2010 title, Webber had a difficult ’11 season and was overshadowed by team-mate Sebastian Vettel, who dominated the championship.
Brawn: New Mercedes can be a winner

Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn says he has not seen anything to suggest that the squad’s 2012 car will not be capable of winning races. The Brackley-based team has looked strong in winter testing, and is determined to fight for victories this year after two seasons of not quite getting on terms with the frontrunners.

FIA expects 2013 exhaust rule changes

Formula 1 race director Charlie Whiting has admitted that further adjustments to the sport’s exhaust regulations are likely to be required for 2013 to stop teams finding ways of replicating the effect of the blown diffuser. Changes to the rules this year are aiming to make it impossible for exhaust gases to be directed in a way that helps the underfloor aerodynamic performance, but there have been suggestions that some teams are finding ways to achieve a similar effect within the revised rules
F1 may need budget cap – Ecclestone

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone says he is open to revisiting the idea of a budget cap for teams in the world championship – as he warned squads that they should ‘tighten their belts’ amid current financial pressures. Former FIA president Max Mosley’s 2009 budget cap plan was ultimately rejected in favour of the Resource Restriction Agreement created by the teams. In an interview with the official Formula 1 website, Ecclestone said he felt some teams were taking a delusional approach to their economic situations.
Muller wins Monza season-opener

Yvan Muller survived a second lap trip across the grass to take victory in the opening race of the 2012 World Touring Car Championship at Monza. The defending world champion grabbed the lead from polesitter Gabriele Tarquini with a clean move at the Parabolica close to the end of the opening lap
Varhaug wins second Monza race

Pal Varhaug claimed his maiden Auto GP victory in the second race at the season-opening round at Monza, benefitting from a rapid pitstop by the Virtuosi UK team to charge up the order from seventh on the grid. Once in the lead, the GP2 convert pulled out a 3.5-second margin of victory over MP Motorsport’s Chris van der Drift. The Kiwi completed no pre-season testing and was only confirmed in his drive on Thursday
Venturini makes BVM Target move
