Barrichello hopes for improvements
March 23rd, 2012
Rubens Barrichello is hoping to find some overnight improvements after a combination of mechanical and handling problems left him outside the top 20 in both of Friday’s practice sessions for the IndyCar season-opener at St Petersburg. The Brazilian struggled to recover after losing track time to a still-unidentified mechanical problem in the opening session, and said that his lack of familiarity with both the car and the nuances of the circuit made it hard for him to close the gap. “I was going to play catch-up already just by learning the circuit,” Barrichello said.
Power ahead in second practice
March 23rd, 2012
Will Power only completed a handful of laps in Friday’s second IndyCar practice session at St Petersburg, but they were enough for the Australian driver to head a Penske one-two. Power set his quickest time of 1m02.0077s on just his third lap and then sat out much of the rest of the session, returning to the circuit for the final minutes of running following a late red flag.
NASCAR defends inspection process
March 23rd, 2012
NASCAR President Mike Helton has defended the inspection process and the ruling against Jimmie Johnson and his team following the Daytona 500, despite a final appeal overturning most of the penalties imposed. Last Tuesday Hendrick Motorsports claimed an unexpected victory in the final appeal against NASCAR’s ruling on Johnson’s Daytona 500 car, which failed its first inspection ahead of the Sprint Cup season opener at the Florida oval
Go West Young Men
by Chris Cunningham on March 23rd, 2012
After a brief spring break, the iRacing.com Skip Barber Racing School Premier Series headed over to the west coast for Week 2 action at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Laguna Seca, known famously for its Corkscrew turn, provided excitement for drivers on the virtual circuit. Some new faces made their presence known during Week 2, as well as the contenders who elected not to drop Week 1 of the series championship. Last week, for Christian Aranha went undefeated in his two starts. His good fortune allowed him to have a repeat performance at Laguna Seca, but a high strength of field race win enabled iRacing.com Grand Prix World Championship Series regular David Williams to join Aranha atop the overall standings. The first race of week two (2:00 GMT) saw three splits [...]
Dixon heads St Petersburg practice
March 23rd, 2012
Scott Dixon opened the 2012 IndyCar season by setting the fastest time in the first practice session at St Petersburg. The Chip Ganassi Racing team waited until the hour-long session was half over before sending Dixon and team-mate Dario Franchitti out onto the track, and Dixon set his best time of 1m03.0406s with 11 minutes still on the clock.
Wild night at Zandvoort
by Ed Sutcliff and Les Turner on March 23rd, 2012
Eager to test their skills at one of the world’s most challenging road courses, eighteen members of the Red Sox Racing league traveled to Zandvoort Netherlands during week ten of the 2012 Season One schedule. Circuit Park Zandvoort played host to the “Nederlandse Automobiel 30 Zandvoort GP”, a 20 lap shootout which produced the 2nd closest road course finish in RSR history. The track’s 2.67 mile, 13 corner layout has been the site of the Dutch Grand Prix between 1952 and 1985. It includes a long straight along the front stretch which funnels drivers into a banked 180 degree turn appropriately named “Tarzan”. The U-turn leads to a series of difficult tight, medium, and high-speed corners leading back to the main grandstands. A loss of focus at any point on [...]
Hunter-Reay concerned by kerbs
March 23rd, 2012
Andretti Autosport driver Ryan Hunter-Reay has expressed concern over changes that have been made to the kerbs at the St Petersburg street circuit ahead of this weekend’s opening round of the 2012 IndyCar season. The cars are yet to run on the Florida track, with the first practice session scheduled to start on Friday afternoon, but Hunter-Reay has suggested that the reprofiled kerbs could be too aggressive for the new Dallara DW12s, meaning that some cornering speeds will be lowered. “In the past here, we’ve been able to run over [the kerbs],” Hunter-Reay said.

March 23rd, 2012
Ted Cutting, the man behind Aston Martin’s Le Mans-winning DBR1, has died at the age of 85. After a spell in the Fleet Air Arm, Cutting joined Sydney Allard’s small team in the 1940s. He once described the job as “very basic automobile engineering” and left to join Aston Martin in 1949
Q and A with Arena manager Alan Cole
March 23rd, 2012
Arena Motorsport’s Ford Focus S2000 TCs will again carry 30kg of penalty ballast when it heads into the second World Touring Car Championship round in Valencia. The ballast relates to issues over the floor of the Focus – just one of the inevitable problems the squad faces as it makes the jump between the British and World championships. Arena team manager Alan Cole outlined the problems his team has already faced and what steps it needs to take in order to avoid them in the future.
Arena Fords to keep 30kg ballast
March 23rd, 2012
Arena Motorsport’s World Touring Car Fords will continue to carry 30kg of ballast at the forthcoming round at Valencia. The imposition of the weight follows a difference of interpretation on technical aspects of the team’s all-new Ford Focus S2000 TCs in round one of the championship at Monza earlier this month.
Raikkonen gets five-place grid penalty
March 23rd, 2012
Kimi Raikkonen is to lose five places on the grid for the Malaysian Grand Prix after a gearbox change following the second free practice. Shortly after the session concluded, Lotus wrote on Twitter that an issue with the Finn’s gearbox meant it would be changed before the start of the third and final practice session. The team confirmed the change to AUTOSPORT, meaning Raikkonen looks set to lose five places

March 23rd, 2012
Daniel Ricciardo is confident that Toro Rosso can be the in the mix for points on Sunday. The Australian said that while he did not expect his fifth place finish in second practice to be representative, it was nevertheless a sign that Toro Rosso has the potential to challenge for top 10 honours.
Loeb says Portugal pace key to year
March 23rd, 2012
Sebastien Loeb believes that next week’s Rally of Portugal will offer the first meaningful assessment of the season of the pace of his Citroen DS3 WRC against the Ford Fiesta RS WRC. The world champion admitted that he was alarmed at the increase in speed the Ford team showed on the previous gravel outing in Mexico, but said that the lower altitude Faro-based fourth round of the WRC will mean much more. “This is the first rally where we will really be able to gauge the relative strengths of the crews,” said Loeb.
Pirelli downplays Mercedes tyre issues
March 23rd, 2012
Pirelli believes too much has been made of tyre degradation issues at Mercedes – and reckons deeper analysis of the Australian race shows its issues are not as bad as some believe. Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg had delivered a strong performance in qualifying in Melbourne, but their race turned into a disappointment – as a gearbox problem and tyre issues hampered both men. Although Mercedes itself is targeting a better set-up to improve the tyre degradation situation, Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery actually thinks its problems looked worse than they are because of the way the Albert Park race panned out
Latvala: Dust makes qualifying key
March 23rd, 2012
Ford World Rally Team driver Jari-Matti Latvala says qualifying will be more important than ever for next week’s Rally of Portugal, with the Finn adding dust is a major cause for concern on the Faro-based event. For the first time since it was re-introduced into the World Rally Championship – after a six-year absence – in 2007, the Rally of Portugal will include night stages.
Bottas happy with practice showing
March 23rd, 2012
Williams test driver Valtteri Bottas said he was pleased to outpace team-mate Pastor Maldonado on his debut in a grand prix weekend session, even if free practice times are not very important. The reigning GP3 champion stepped into Bruno Senna’s car at Sepang for the first of 15 planned Friday outings on F1 weekends this season.
HRT confident it will qualify for the race
March 23rd, 2012
HRT duo Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan are confident that qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix should not be too much of a problem, even though doubts remain about their potential to make it through to the end of the race.
Button: Low-fuel pace needs improving
March 23rd, 2012
Jenson Button says he is ‘not completely happy’ with his low fuel set-up, an issue he feels is of paramount importance given the benefit pole position has on the race’s outcome. As he demonstrated so emphatically in Australia, the Briton says that leading into the first corner can be key to a good race, and that securing pole position is therefore the aim for tomorrow. After losing time to an oil leak in the first practice session, and then focussing more on long runs in the second, Button says he still has a few issues on low fuel runs.
Di Resta doubtful of breaking into Q3
March 23rd, 2012
Paul di Resta believes Force India will have a tough time reaching Q3 in tomorrow’s qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix. The Scot finished in 13th position in second practice after losing valuable track time because of a problem with his brakes. Di Resta said the car was feeling more competitive than in Australia last weekend, but admitted reaching the top ten in qualifying will be difficult.
Hamilton says balance will be key
March 23rd, 2012
Lewis Hamilton says finding a set-up balance which suits both qualifying and the race will be key to his fortunes in the Malaysian Grand Prix. After going fastest in both practice sessions, the 2008 world champion said he was already happy with the feel of his car on short runs
