Houston likely to get race in 2013
March 24th, 2012
IndyCar is likely to add a Houston street race to its calendar in 2013, although series officials deny that a deal has already been done. Houston was a fixture on the Champ Car calendar between 1998 and 2001, and again in 2006 and 2007. IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard confirmed that negotiations with promoters were well advanced, but insisted that no announcement was imminent.

Vautier strikes first blow in St Pete
March 24th, 2012
Tristan Vautier has struck the opening blow in the 2012 Indy Lights season with a comfortable win around the streets of St Petersburg. The reigning Star Mazda champion headed a 1-2 for Sam Schmidt Motorsports by beating home Esteban Guerrieri. His margin of victory was just over a second, although it would have been far greater had it not been for a couple of stints behind the safety car that bunched up the field
Chevrolet drivers still wary of Honda
March 24th, 2012
Leading Chevrolet drivers have cautioned against reading too much into the manufacturer’s dominant performance over main rival Honda in qualifying for the IndyCar season-opener at St Petersburg. Chevrolet-powered cars occupied five of the six slots in the final phase of qualifying, with Schmidt-Hamilton Motorsport’s Simon Pagenaud the sole Honda representative
Power surprised by own pole time
March 24th, 2012
Will Power admits that he surprised himself with the lap time that gave him pole position at St Petersburg for the third consecutive year. Power earned himself the top spot with a 1m.01.3721s effort that was 0.6s quicker than he’d gone in free practice earlier in the day, and 0.3s quicker than his own track record for the St Petersburg circuit, which he’d previously set in qualifying for the 2010 race. Penske team-mate Ryan Briscoe, who qualified second, was 0.18s off Power’s time.
McLaren men ready to race each other
March 24th, 2012
McLaren team-mates Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton say they will have no qualms about racing each other this season if their team continues to be Formula 1′s pacesetter. The British duo will share the front row for a second race in succession in Malaysia, with Button having won in Australia, where Hamilton finished third. Asked if he thought racing his polesitting team-mate into the first corner on Sunday would be tough, Button said he expected it to he something they would get used to if their current form continued
Power leads all-Penske front row
March 24th, 2012
Will Power will start from pole position for the opening round of the IndyCar Series’ new era in St Petersburg. The Australian beat Penske team-mate Ryan Briscoe to the top spot, with Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe filling row two, ahead of the final Penske entry of Helio Castroneves. Behind an all-Chevrolet top five, Simon Pagenaud was fastest Honda runner for Schmidt-Hamilton as he took an impressive sixth – but will drop down the order due to an engine change penalty
Hayden fastest in rain-affected test
March 24th, 2012
Ducati’s Nicky Hayden set the pace on a rain-affected second day of testing at Jerez, though the American set his time on an almost-dry track near the end of the day. Hayden’s lap of 1m40.755s was nearly a second faster than that of Karel Abraham on the Cardion AB privateer Ducati.
Pagenaud tops times in final practice
March 24th, 2012
Simon Pagenaud has set the quickest time in today’s third IndyCar free practice session at St Petersburg. Penske duo Will Power and Ryan Briscoe had looked safe at the top of the timing screens with the only sub-1m02s laps in the field until Pagenaud, who was issued a 10-place grid penalty last night for an unauthorised engine change, produced a 1m01.8929s effort with just five minutes left on the clock
Vautier on debut Indy Lights pole
March 24th, 2012

Boardman to use TDI at Valencia
March 24th, 2012
Tom Boardman’s car will be powered by a turbodiesel engine when he makes his first World Touring Car Championship appearance of the season at Valencia next weekend. The Special Tuning Racing driver had planned to run one of SEAT’s new 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol units in Spain, as his team-mate Darryl O’Young did at the Monza season-opener.
Mercedes silent on future F1 deal
March 24th, 2012
Mercedes-Benz is keeping silent on the reasons why it has not joined rival teams in agreeing commercial terms with Bernie Ecclestone, amid speculation that it is not happy with the way some outfits have been handed a preferential financial deal. Ecclestone dropped a bombshell on Saturday morning in Malaysia when he announced that a ‘majority’ of teams had agreed to new commercial terms that will keep them committed to Formula 1 beyond this year
Raikkonen: Lotus has front-row pace
March 24th, 2012
Kimi Raikkonen believes his Lotus had the potential to be inside the top two in qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix, had not made a mistake on his Q3 flying lap at Sepang. Raikkonen will start from 10th on the grid in Sunday’s race after the team was forced to change his car’s gearbox, but Raikkonen believes his pace was good enough to contend for pole; on paper, at least
Brawn fed up with wing row
March 24th, 2012
Ross Brawn believes that if rival teams are so concerned about the legality of the rear wing on the Mercedes F1 W03 then they should make an official protest before a grand prix weekend gets underway. The Mercedes system, often referred to as a DRS activated f-duct, has been the subject of much talk since the season kicked off in Australia last weekend.
Massa finally comfortable with car
March 24th, 2012
Felipe Massa believes he has finally got a Ferrari he feels comfortable with after making more changes ahead of Malaysian Grand Prix qualifying. The Brazilian failed to join his team-mate Fernando Alonso in Q3 at Sepang, instead having to settle for 12th on the grid
Senna considering two-stop strategy
March 24th, 2012
Bruno Senna believes that anybody making proper use of a two-stop strategy during Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix will have a big advantage over those stopping three times. Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli is expecting most drivers make three stops during the race , with the heat and humidity at Sepang causing high levels of degradation to the medium compound rubber. But after qualifying, Williams driver Senna said that if a car can be set up to look after its tyres well, then the time gained through not making a third stop will more than off-set any pace loss during a stint.
Alonso positive over Ferrari progress
March 24th, 2012
Fernando Alonso was positive about Ferrari’s progress after qualifying in ninth position for the Malaysian Grand Prix. The Spaniard had started from 12th place in the opening race in Australia, but he made it in to Q3 in today’s grid-deciding session at Sepang and will start from eighth place following a penalty for Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen
Vettel hoping prime strategy pays off
March 24th, 2012
Sebastian Vettel is hoping his tyre strategy will pay off in the Malaysian Grand Prix after another difficult qualifying session for him. The Red Bull driver was the only man in the top ten to use the harder Pirelli tyres for his final run in Q3 after struggling with his car’s handling on the medium compound rubber. Although Vettel said that he hadn’t opted to go with the hard tyres for strategic reasons but because he was quicker with them during qualifying, the world champion is still hoping it will be beneficial for him.
Valsecchi takes blame for ‘lost’ win
March 24th, 2012
Davide Valsecchi claims that he did not deserve to win the opening GP2 race of the season after making a bad start from pole position. The DAMS driver recovered from a sluggish getaway to take second place behind race winner Luiz Razia, who charged away at the front unchallenged after capitalising on Valsecchi’s error. “The team and my car deserved the win so it’s a shame that I lost it,” said Valsecchi.
Alonso: KERS failure didn’t cost me
March 24th, 2012
Fernando Alonso suffered a KERS failure in the final part of qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix, but the Ferrari driver does not believe it cost him any places on the grid. The Spaniard set the ninth fastest time in Q3, meaning he will start eighth thanks to Kimi Raikkonen’s grid penalty for a gearbox change. Despite making it through to the final part of qualifying, which his team-mate Felipe Massa again failed to do, Alonso does not believe that a fully functional KERS would have enabled him to climb any higher up the order.
