Jimmie Johnson kept his momentum running from last week’s Martinsville win to claim pole position for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase race at Texas. The Hendrick driver bounced back from being only 27th fastest in Friday practice to set a flying lap of 28.261 seconds at an average speed of 191.076 mph

Andreas Mikkelsen kicked off the weekend that will see him officially crowned as the final Intercontinental Rally Challenge champion by setting the pace on stage one in Cyprus. With Skoda opting not to enter Juho Hanninen and Jan Kopecky for the season finale, reigning champion Mikkelsen’s points lead is unassailable. The Norwegian was quickest by 4.4 seconds on the Pafos street stage that kicked off the last rally in IRC history

Teams told trick brake systems illegal

Formula 1′s teams have been told by the FIA that they cannot run trick brake systems that react to temperature to improve cooling during races, following a complaint by Red Bull. AUTOSPORT can reveal that Red Bull wrote to motor racing’s governing body ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to seek clarification on the use of thermal energy devices within the air duct of the brake system. The team contended that attempts to use either a bimetallic strip – which would change shape to open and close off cooling ducts depending on the temperature of the brake friction material – or a thermal actuator was a breach of the regulations.
Raikkonen: Four tenths to be found

Kimi Raikkonen thinks he will should be able to find four tenths of a second if he can get his car sorted for the rest of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend. The Lotus driver struggled with the handling of his car during practice on Friday, but admitted he was surprised by how quick he was given his problems. Nico Hulkenberg believes his Force India team will have to take a step forward overnight in order to be able to fight for a points finish in Abu Dhabi. The German driver, who has finished in the points in the last three grands prix , was 13th quickest in second practice on Friday , having finished 12th in the first session . Hamilton not getting his hopes up

A pessimistic Lewis Hamilton played down his chances of preventing Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull from claiming pole in Abu Dhabi. Despite topping first practice and trailing only Vettel in the second session , the Briton said he had been struggling with his car, and in particular on the option compound. With a lack of major upgrades from McLaren , Hamilton said the overall picture hadn’t changed and that his best chance of landing pole therefore depends on Vettel making mistakes.

Ferrari: Friday upgrades ‘promising’

Pat Fry has described the performance of the upgrades tried by Ferrari in free practice for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as “promising”. Ferrari ran a modified front and rear wing, among other tweaks, and although Fry admitted that the team had yet to decide whether or not to continue running the parts, he is optimistic. Fernando Alonso ended the second free practice session in seventh, just over eight-tenths off pacesetter Sebastian Vettel .
Red Bull accepts entry fee hike

Red Bull says it has little choice but to accept the dramatic hike in entry fees it is facing to compete in Formula 1 next year. As AUTOSPORT originally revealed, the FIA has pushed through an overhaul of the entry fee system for 2013 – which will result in a championship-winning team like Red Bull facing a cost of more than $4 million USD to compete.

Sebastian Vettel redressed the balance in the second free practice session for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as he used his early laps on Pirelli’s soft tyre to set the pace ahead of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton has only ever started on the front row in Abu Dhabi and also won last year’s race and started on pole for the inaugural event in 2009.

Fifteen members of the Red Sox Racing League traveled to Florida for the “Ghost Festival Hallowed Eve” during week eight of the 2012 Season Three schedule. The Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida was the site of the event. Hosting races since 1950, the track’s 3.7 mile, 17 corner layout is a favorite amongst drivers and fans alike. An extremely wide front stretch invites passing, but the rest of the course forces drivers to remain focused on their next corner instead of the competition. Situated on an active airport, the track includes a variety of racing surfaces as drivers transition from smooth hard concrete and softer asphalt sections.
