Crutchlow accepts blame for fall

Cal Crutchlow reckons he was culpable for the mistake which led to him crashing out of second in a treacherous Valencia finale. Having opted to start from the pitlane following a last-minute switch to slicks, the Briton fought his way through the field and was running second when, seven laps from the finish, he lost the front of his bike heading into the final turn. It was his third retirement in the last four races, all of which he has exited while in podium contention.

Dani Pedrosa admits he was wracked with doubts about his tyre choice at Valencia and that only a last-second ‘instinct’ call made him start from the pitlane. The move proved decisive – rather than losing 25 seconds switching to a second bike mid-race, he had to contend with a far smaller deficit and within eight laps had duly closed to within two seconds of leader and MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo.

Sebastien Loeb ended his final year of full-time World Rally Championship competition by sealing his 76th career victory with a eighth successive Rally of Spain triumph. Loeb was out of sorts in Friday morning’s downpours on the gravel stages , but was making progress up the order even before hitting the asphalt on Saturday. Nearly 40 seconds off the lead in fifth early on, by the rally’s midway point Loeb’s Citroen was leading by 20s.
