F1 aims to drop ‘force majeure’ rule
November 15th, 2012
Formula 1 chiefs are considering revising the qualifying rules for next season to remove ambiguity over what is a justifiable reason for cars not completing their in-laps. At the moment, drivers have to make their way back to the pits under their own power unless there is a case of ‘force majeure’ that stops them
Teams to face tougher front wing tests
November 15th, 2012
Formula 1 teams will face tougher front wing tests next year, with the FIA keen to clamp down on team’s exploiting the flexible bodywork rules. Although the governing body tightened up the wing flexibility tests for this year – with a 1000N force applied 790mm ahead of the front wheel centre line – that has not stopped suggestions that some teams are still trying to get around the rules. At the Japanese Grand Prix this year the FIA trialled a different location for the tests, and it has decided that tests will be done differently for 2013.
FIA to restrict DRS use next year
November 15th, 2012
The FIA is to restrict the use of DRS anywhere on the circuit except in the allocated zones during practice and qualifying on grand prix weekends next year. Since the system was introduced at the start of the 2011 season, drivers have been free to use the DRS as they want during practice and qualifying with the activation zone applying only in the race. But FIA technical delegate Charlie Whiting recently informed the teams that he is no longer happy with this for safety reasons amid concerns about drivers risking deploying the DRS early at the exit of corners.
Austin a ‘perfect showcase’ for F1
November 15th, 2012
The new Austin circuit will be an ideal showcase for Formula 1 cars’ capabilities when pushed to the limit, according to Jenson Button. The McLaren driver believes the sweeping fast section from Turn 2 to Turn 8 of the Circuit of the Americas is just what F1 machinery needs to highlight its speed. That is why Button reckons Austin will be a bigger hit for the United States than Indianapolis was when F1 raced there from to 2000 to 2007
McLaughlin’s Hat-trick at the Glen
by Dylan Sharman on November 15th, 2012
Round 2 of the iRacing.com V8 Supercar Championship presented by BigPond headed to one of the most popular tracks on the calendar, Watkins Glen Cup. The home of the US Grand Prix from 1961-80 would be the venue for the second week on the calendar for a 35 lap contest that would present the sim racers with their first pit stop race this season. Qualifying produced an ANZ Motorsports lock-out with Scott McLaughlin posting a 1:10.667 to fractionally out-do Justin Ruggier on a 1:10.674. Richard Hamstead drew first blood with a victory in the early race and would start third in the main race beside Madison Down. Rens Broekman and Brad Ryan shared the third row of the grid with Shaun Kelly and Vail Riches on Row Four, with Joshua [...]
Elomaa Shines at Phoenix
by Jordan Hightower on November 15th, 2012
Week Two of the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series (Open Setup) took the drivers to the Valley of the Sun and Phoenix International Raceway located in Avondale, Arizona for some high speed short track online racing. Although some would consider Aleksi Elomaa (Finland) a road racer by trade, he is also quite the talent on the ovals. That talent would be shown as he earned the most championship points for the week at one of the more difficult tracks on the NASCAR circuit. 941 sim racers competed in an official race during Week Two, but out of that large number, only one could claim victory in the week’s highest Strength of Field race. That person was Ohio native Kenny Humpe who won the 3144 SoF in dominating fashion leading 84 [...]
Button: Second will be better than pole
November 15th, 2012
Jenson Button suspects that qualifying second for the United States Grand Prix might be better than starting on pole position. The McLaren driver believes that the run out of the second slot on the grid is a little flatter than it is for first, meaning that whoever qualifies there could have an edge on the charge to the first corner

The interviewers have varied from former world champions Jackie Stewart and Niki Lauda, to opera singer Placido Domingo
Austin weather ‘could hurt Red Bull’
November 15th, 2012
Mark Webber thinks the lower than expected temperatures in Austin could be the biggest hindrance for Red Bull at this weekend’s United States Grand Prix. Following a recent warm spell in the city, the temperatures have reverted to their more usual autumnal lows this week – and it is much cooler than Formula 1 teams have experienced at recent venues. With tyre temperatures having been such an important factor in the battle for victories this season, the cooler conditions could deliver a decisive swing in the tight battle at the front of the field

November 15th, 2012
Fernando Alonso says he goes into the 2012 championship-deciding races “much more relaxed” than in his previous Formula 1 title showdowns. The Spanish Ferrari driver arrives in the United States Grand Prix 10 points behind Red Bull rival Sebastian Vettel, who could clinch the title this weekend if he wins the race and Alonso finishes outside the top four

November 15th, 2012
Sebastian Vettel believes the furore over him and Kimi Raikkonen swearing during Abu Dhabi Grand Prix podium interviews was excessive. Both third-place finisher Vettel and winner Raikkonen used profanities when being quizzed by Formula 1 racer turned commentator David Coulthard during the new-style live interview procedure at Yas Marina.

A Beginner’s Guide to the Art of (i)Racing
by Katier Scott on November 15th, 2012
So you’ve always wanted to be a racing driver, you’ve decided to turn your back on arcade games and concentrate on one of the most inexpensive forms of full-on motorsport: iRacing.com. But you’ve never raced against other sim-racers before. The question running around your head, therefore, is just when should you actually line-up on a grid and go racing? The straight answer is sooner than you might think. But before you even join a practice session it’s worth doing some preparation. 1) Read the Sporting Code paying attention to the sections on communication, protests and most importantly iRating and Safety Racing (SR). 2) Watch ALL of the driving school videos. 3) Turn off voice completely. 4) Turn off text chat in races – both of these options are in the [...]
