Gordon: Bowyer clash proved passion
November 16th, 2012
Jeff Gordon insists he regrets deliberately taking Clint Bowyer out of the Phoenix NASCAR Sprint Cup race last weekend, but also believes his actions proved he still has ‘a fire inside’. Four-time champion Gordon put Bowyer into the wall in a late collision that also collected Joey Logano, and triggered a pitlane brawl between the pair’s Hendrick and Michael Waltrip crews.

Kimi Raikkonen – 14th/11th: “It’s a nice circuit to drive; the sectors are quite different so there’s a good challenge there. Of course, like with any new track there was no grip at the start of the day which doesn’t give you a very good feeling, but as the grip improves it will be more fun to drive for sure. This morning was very slippery, this afternoon less so but you still can’t really push and it’s a bit tricky to find the limit.
Drivers fear overtaking will be hard
November 16th, 2012
Leading Formula 1 drivers fear there could be little overtaking in Austin’s first United States Grand Prix. Although the Circuit of the Americas layout has received great praise from the Formula 1 fraternity during its maiden GP weekend so far, with the high-speed sweeps of first sector particularly lauded, many have also voiced concerns about its passing potential. McLaren’s Jenson Button thinks the configuration precludes cars following each other closely

Fernando Alonso – 3rd/3rd: “It’s no surprise to see the two Red Bulls ahead of the field: in the last few races they have had the best package, therefore today’s result is logical. We know what are our strengths – team work and reliability – and we will make the most of them in the fight
Alonso calm about Red Bull pace edge
November 16th, 2012
Fernando Alonso expects an all-Red Bull front row for the United States Grand Prix – but does not believe that would be a death knell for his 2012 Formula 1 title hopes. Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber appear to be in a class of their own at Austin, with the duo topping the times in second free practice . Although that has left Alonso resigned to starting behind the Red Bulls on the grid, he still has faith that Ferrari’s race strengths can help him overcome the speed deficit he is battling against
Raikkonen convinced Lotus will be quick
November 16th, 2012
Kimi Raikkonen is sure Lotus will be competitive in the United States Grand Prix once the Austin track’s grip level improves. The whole Formula 1 field struggled with the dusty surface of the brand new Circuit of the Americas in Friday practice , but Lotus proved particularly severely affected

Pedro de la Rosa – 23rd/23rd: “This is a beautiful and technical circuit. There are all sorts of corners and you have to drive with confidence, as there are quite a few blind turns

Paul Hembery: “Today was all about familiarisation for the teams on what is the only brand new track of the year. With weather conditions being cooler than expected, the initial data suggests that both wear and degradation is very low on both compounds, which leads us to think that we will see just one stop on Sunday, but we will have to look at all the numbers in more detail tonight to have a clearer picture. Our data simulation work has proved to be extremely accurate, with both the compounds performing exactly as we expected, although we also have to take into account the high degree of track evolution that could certainly affect the strategy on Sunday.

Nico Hulkenberg – 7th/17th: “I think the organisers have given us an awesome circuit. It’s good fun to drive and there is a nice variation of corners, which gives a nice rhythm to the track. In terms of the new generation of tracks, I’d say it’s one of my favourites

Sebastian Vettel – 1st/1st: “It was slippery this morning and a bit like driving on ice. It wasn’t so easy, but we managed to get into a rhythm. We had a bit of a problem this afternoon and so couldn’t run as much as we wanted, but we got two good runs which is important for tomorrow and Sunday

Timo Glock – 21st/20th: “A very difficult start to the weekend – for everyone I think! The track was very dirty this morning and in FP1 we just had to wait until it got into reasonable shape. In the end the car was quite okay but there was traffic in the last few laps and when you lose the temperature in the tyres because of that, with it being so cold at the start of the day it’s difficult to recover the time.

Heikki Kovalainen – 19th/19th: “The first lap we did in FP1 was on a track that probably had less grip than anywhere else I’ve ever driven! As we’re at a new circuit that was to be expected but the track layout lived up to expectations – it’s a proper driver’s track and as it keeps evolving it’s going to get even faster which will give us a chance to really find out what it’s all about. “In the morning session we were mainly focused on the normal P1 programme, running through baseline setups and aero work and then in the afternoon we went onto more tyre work and longer runs on both compounds.

Lewis Hamilton – 2nd/4th: “What a great turn-out for a Friday! I never expected to see so many people in the grandstands – it makes me feel even more excited for Saturday and Sunday. “This is a great drivers’ track – it’s very tough to pull together three perfect sectors.
Sauber: Pirelli choice wrong for Austin
November 16th, 2012
Sauber believes the tyres brought to Austin for the United States Grand Prix are proving too hard for the Austin track. Pirelli has taken the medium and hard tyres for this weekend’s race, and that, added to the slippery surface of the brand new Circuit of the Americas, made things difficult for the drivers during Friday practice. “The biggest challenge is to get the tyres to work, as they are definitely too hard for the circuit,” said Giampaolo Dall’Ara, Sauber’s head of track engineering.

November 16th, 2012
Nico Rosberg – 9th/7th: “I like the new track here at the Circuit of the Americas very much and they have done a great job with the layout. We’ve also had a really nice welcome for Formula One in the US as you can see how many fans are at the circuit already on a Friday. The grandstands looked really packed
Rosberg sure he can end points drought
November 16th, 2012
Nico Rosberg is certain Mercedes has a good chance of ending its points drought in the United States Grand Prix after being buoyed by his car’s form in Friday practice at Austin. Mercedes’ last points finish came with Rosberg’s fifth place in Singapore nearly two months ago
Hamilton taken aback by Vettel’s pace
November 16th, 2012
Lewis Hamilton admitted he was taken aback by Sebastian Vettel’s pace as the Red Bull driver dominated both Friday practice sessions for the United States Grand Prix at Austin. Vettel deposed Hamilton with a late time 1.418 seconds quicker than the second-placed McLaren driver in practice one , and then topped practice two by 0.757s despite losing an hour of running to a water leak

November 16th, 2012
Kamui Kobayashi – 8th/9th: “The high speed corners of the new circuit are very enjoyable, I really like driving here. The first session was about getting familiar with the track and waiting for the tarmac to improve for a better grip level. In the beginning of the second session I did a 20-lap long run on hard tyres before we then had a break due to a broken exhaust.

November 16th, 2012
Daniel Ricciardo – 12th/15th: “The new track lived up to the expectations we had before coming here, although the lack of grip spoilt it a little bit. But as the track rubbers-in and cleans up, I’m sure it will get even better. The grip level did improve from morning to afternoon but I’d expected a bit more.
