  • Jason Lofing
    iRacing.com Series Writer
Jason is 21 years old and was born and raised in Elk Grove. California. A big time NASCAR fan, he hasn’t missed a race on Sunday in years. Lofing is also a huge San Fransisco Giants fan and tries to take in at least a couple games a year. Other than sim racing, his biggest (and far more expensive!) hobby is photography. Although he is rather new to sim racing, Lofing has already accomplished some pretty impressive results, qualifying for the 2011 iRacing Oval Pro Series in Season 1, 2011, winning the inaugural Landon Cassill Qualifying Challenge and finishing runner-up in the second one.
  • Ray Bryden
    Technical contributor
Ray grew up in Nova Scotia, which means he’s a hockey nut, but in Nova Scotia’s two non-winter months he had to find other diversions, which meant watching F1 racing on weekends with his dad and brothers. Without the resources to get started in racing, he gravitated to computer versions of racing – first Atari games like Pole Position, followed by PC racing games like Indianapolis 500: The Simulation. Dozens of others came and went, until Grand Prix Legends came along and he decided sim-racing was his official hobby. Years were spent enjoying this both offline and online until a few years of fatherhood took priority. When free-time reappeared he heard about iRacing and signed up in 2008 and became so involved in the service that he wrote one of the first books on the subject of sim-racing, iRacing Paddock. When not writing for inRacingNews.com, his main occupation is as a research associate with Saint-Gobain working on advanced ceramic materials.

Patrick Atherton, originally from Adelaide in the state of South Australia, currently resides just outside of Melbourne, Victoria with wife of 17 years and 3 kids. A business manager by profession, but also dabbles with blogging, cartooning and fine art, having been published both as a writer in a short-lived South Australian motorsport yearbook and later as a cartoonist in a niche trade magazine. At the age of 19 he competed in club circuit events in an Austin Healey Sprite, later indulging in sprint karts between 1994 and 2000. Following the move to the State of Victoria he raced Road Race Karts (“Superkarts” as they are known in Australia) in the popular Rotax class, competing at Phillip Island, Oran Park, Mallala, Wakefield Park, Eastern Creek, Calder Park, Sandown and Winton. It was during this time he met former Australian F2 champion and inventor of Australia’s first, and most prolific race simulator rig, Jon Crooke. This culminated in an introduction to Papyrus’ legendary NR2003 simulation, and the subsequent sim racing addiction which brought him to iRacing.

    Contributing Writer
Tim Terry, aka the voice of Maritime stock car racing, fell in love with sim racing in 2004 after he joined the Sim Racing Network crew as a pit reporter. From October 2004 to SRNtv’s closure in June 2007, he’s covered prestigious races and leagues such as the Online 500, FLM Fall 400, Real Racing Online and the DMP Racing League – each as the lead broadcaster for the company. At the same time the wheels started to turn in another direction as he began announcing stock car racing locally. Terry became the assistant announcer at Scotia Speedworld in May 2007 and took over full duties in May 2009 when long-time voice Mike Kaplan retired from the track. Terry also became the series voice of the Parts For Trucks Pro Stock Tour in ’09 and continues to hold down both posts in 2011. How close was the racing at TMS? Apart Matteo Bortolotti's "runaway" win over Austin Benson (by 1.450s), the margin of victory averaged .123s with three races decided by .075s -- or less.

A wild showdown at the Texas Motor Speedway has come to an end for Round Five of the IZOD INDYCAR Premier Series-Oval series. The fast one and a half mile track provided high speeds and three wide online racing, resulting in quite a show. Drivers not only wanted to win, they wanted a Texas-sized win. This weekend’s qualifier king was John Paquin, with a stunning lap of 23.738s. With limited races, the best of the best drivers came out to show their teeth to the newcomers and old dwellers. The strongest field (SOF) was a 2056, and the checkers that race were taken by this week’s point leader Aleksi Elomma. The Flying Finn lit-up the IZOD Premier Series this weekend. He had one win in two starts, two top fives, [...]

Power claims maiden oval victory

Will Power produced a commanding drive to capitalise on his grid position and take the first oval victory of his career in the second IndyCar Twin 275 race at Texas. Power, who drew grid spot three in the ballot, took the lead from polesitter Tony Kanaan (KV) on lap 41 after a lengthy battle, and then had to hold off a charging Scott Dixon over the closing laps to secure the victory

Kanaan draws Texas race two pole

Tony Kanaan will start the second race at the IndyCar Texas 275s from pole position after pulling the number one spot in the pre-race lottery. Drivers were called up in reverse order of their race one finishing positions and asked to turn around numbered tyres to reveal their starting spots for race two, with the KV Racing veteran taking the main prize. Rookie Wade Cunningham’s disappointment at crashing out of the first race of his debut IndyCar weekend was alleviated when he picked the number two grid spot, while Will Power was visibly delighted after selecting grid spot three

Franchitti wins Texas race one

Dario Franchitti survived a late restart to win the first of the two races at the IndyCar Twin 275s at Texas, leading Scott Dixon across the line for a Ganassi one-two. Franchitti took the lead from polesitter Alex Tagliani at the start and comfortably controlled most of the race, but the Scot’s hopes of a straightforward win were shot when rookies Wade Cunningham and Charlie Kimball came together at Turn 3 with 21 laps remaining, bringing about the race’s only caution period. Franchitti and Dixon controlled the double-file restart, but Penske’s Will Power and Sam Schmidt’s Tagliani were both right on their tail, and the quartet broke away from the rest of the pack and fought between themselves over the final three laps

Drivers: Texas restarts will be fine

IndyCar drivers are confident that there will be no repeat of the controversy surrounding the double-file restarts at last month’s Indianapolis 500 when the system is redeployed for today’s Twin 275s at Texas. The system was widely criticised at Indy on safety grounds, with some drivers fearful of the repercussions of the high line being littered with marbles late in the race

Patrick: Drivers may miss race two

Danica Patrick is predicting a diminished field for the second race in today’s IndyCar Twin 275s at Texas Motor Speedway today. The series is running the first twin-race event in American single-seaters since 1981, with the second race to start an hour after the completion of the first. The grid for the opening race was determined in qualifying yesterday, with Alex Tagliani taking pole, while the race two grid will be determined by a random draw between the races.

Tagliani confused by race slump

Alex Tagliani admitted he was puzzled by how his pace tailed off in the Indianapolis 500 after his strong challenge for the lead in the opening stints. The surprise polesitter had maintained his practice and qualifying form at first to fight for the lead with Ganassi’s Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti. But following the third pitstops Tagliani’s Sam Schmidt Motorsports car fell off the pace and he tumbled to 19th place before eventually crashing out

Wheldon thrilled to win for Herta

Dan Wheldon said winning with Indianapolis 500 with his long-time friend Bryan Herta’s young team made his second victory in IndyCar’s premier race particularly sweet. Without a full-time drive for this season, Wheldon teamed up with Bryan Herta Autosport for Indianapolis – which would be only the second ever IndyCar race for the team co-owned by Herta and engineer Steve Newey. The Wheldon/Herta combination was a frontrunner all month, and ended up winning when JR Hildebrand crashed out of the lead at the final corner.

JR Hildebrand said he was more upset for his Panther Racing team and its sponsors than he was sad for himself after crashing out of the Indianapolis 500 lead at the very last corner of the race. Drivers still angry over restarts

The IndyCar Series’ double-file restart rule came in for more criticism after the Indianapolis 500, with championship leader Will Power and top-10 finisher Marco Andretti vehement in their condemnation of the system. Indy was the first oval race at which the new format – which has provoked controversy in the road and street races held so far this season – was used, and Power felt the wild racing that it led to after caution periods was completely unsafe. “At the back, it was just unbelievably dangerous,” he said

Kanaan doubts he could have won

Tony Kanaan said he never felt he would be able to win the Indianapolis 500, despite managing to twice charge from the field from outside the top 20 to reach the top six. After a low-key qualifying effort, Kanaan started only 22nd, but he managed to claw his way into sixth during the first two stints. He then lost 20 places at a pitstop when he overshot his pit dodging around Pippa Mann’s Conquest car, before fighting back once again to finally finish fourth

Patrick: Strategy gamble right call

Danica Patrick said she was pleased she gambled on fuel strategy and managed to lead the Indianapolis 500 even though her tactics ultimately did not pay off. The Andretti Autosport driver finished 10th, but had led from lap 179 to 188 as she stayed out hoping that she might be able to stretch her final tank of fuel to the finish. Although she arguably had the pace in the closing stages to take a better result on a conventional strategy, Patrick felt the gamble had been worthwhile.
