Wheldon’s team boss could quit

IndyCar team owner Sam Schmidt is considering quitting motorsport following the death of his driver Dan Wheldon at the Las Vegas IndyCar. Wheldon died from head injuries sustained in the 15-car pile-up last Sunday, and Schmidt, whose eponymous outfit co-fielded the British driver’s car with Bryan Herta Autosport at Las Vegas, said that he is now having serious doubts about continuing in the sport.

Paul Tracy hopes that Dan Wheldon’s tragic death will act as a catalyst for IndyCar chiefs to lift safety levels another notch, as he admits he is considering retiring after the events of the weekend. The Canadian was one of 15 drivers caught up in a high-speed crash at the Las Vegas Motorsport Speedway, which resulted in Wheldon dying from head injuries sustained after he hit the catch fencing. Drivers, teams and officials from the IndyCar Series and the rest of worldwide motorsport have been paying tribute to 2005 and 2011 Indianapolis 500 winner and ’05 IndyCar champion Dan Wheldon, who died in an accident at Las Vegas on Sunday. The 33-year-old Briton was involved in a 15-car pile-up on lap 12 of the race, with his Sam Schmidt Motorsports car launched into the air in the accident and rolling across the track before making contact with the safety fence and barrier. He was airlifted to hospital but died from what were described as “unsurvivable injuries.” Wheldon had started from the rear of the field as part of a $5 million challenge that would have seen him and a randomly chosen fan win $2.5 million each had he won the race, which was cancelled after the crash

Dan Wheldon has been airlifted to University Medical Centre in Las Vegas following a huge 15-car accident in the early stages of the IndyCar Series finale. Pippa Mann, who climbed aided from her car, as well as JR Hildebrand have also been taken to the hospital by road. Wheldon, this year’s Indianapolis 500 winner, was one of at least four drivers whose cars became airborne in the crash, which occurred on the 12th lap of the race.
Finale red-flagged after huge crash

The final round of the IndyCar Series has been red flagged at Las Vegas following a horrendous 13-car pile-up after 12 laps. The crash was triggered when Sebastian Saavedra’s Conquest Racing car clipped James Hinchcliffe’s Newman/Haas machine on the run into Turn 1. Saavedra got loose in Turn 2, and this triggered further collisions, with Will Power’s Penske car was one of many to fly high into the air after being left with nowhere to go
Rice penalised, sent to back of grid

Former Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice will start from the back of the grid in Sunday’s IndyCar Series finale at Las Vegas after his times were nullified after qualifying. The 35-year-old American is driving a second Panther Racing entry this weekend, alongside team regular JR Hildebrand, and initially qualified 19th. But series officials deemed that Rice had dipped below the white line during his 200.392mph qualifying run and sent him to the back of the field.
Indy title rivals expect better race

IndyCar title rivals Dario Franchitti and Will Power are optimistic that they can still get to the front in the Las Vegas finale despite only qualifying on row eight. Both drivers struggled for speed on Friday, qualifying 17th and 18th, with Power ahead. Penske driver Power, who trails Franchitti by 18 points, said his car simply did not have the pace in qualifying trim, but hopes to race his way forward on Sunday
