Wheldon gets extra race at Kentucky
September 26th, 2011
Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon will take Alex Tagliani’s Sam Schmidt Motorsports seat for the Kentucky IndyCar race as a warm-up for his potentially big-money Las Vegas outing. Wheldon will start from the rear of the Vegas grid in a car entered jointly by Schmidt and Bryan Herta Autosport, who collaborated on his Indy 500 programme. If Wheldon comes through the field to take victory the IndyCar finale, he will win $2.5 million and a fan drawn at random will win the same amount

Jean Alesi announced today that he would, as predicted by AUTOSPORT magazine earlier this year, enter the 2012 Indianapolis 500. Present at the Singapore Grand Prix as part of his role with Group Lotus – which is backing his Indy bid, Alesi explained why he had chosen to return to top level single-seaters after a decade away. AUTOSPORT was there to hear his thoughts.

Wilson says early return unlikely
September 23rd, 2011
Leading IndyCar driver Justin Wilson says he is making good progress with his recovery from the back injury he sustained at Lexington – but has ruled out a return for this year’s season finale. The Briton suffered a fractured vertebrae when his Dreyer & Reinbold car went off the road in practice for the Mid-Ohio event last month. He has been undergoing treatment since, and feels he has made great strides.

September 22nd, 2011
Briton Jay Howard will return to the Indycar Series for its season finale in Las Vegas. Howard, 30, will join the Rahal-Letterman-Lanigan Racing in what will be his third appearance of the season, after contesting the Indianapolis 500 and the Firestone Twin 275s at Texas earlier this year – with a best finish of 15th. “It’s great to be back with Service Central and Rahal Letterman Lanigan for the IndyCar World Championship at Vegas,” Howard said.

Power: Oval decider holds no fear
September 19th, 2011
IndyCar points leader Will Power says he is looking forward to the title fight being decided over two oval races despite speedways having not always been his strong point. Power has less oval racing experience than his championship rival Dario Franchitti and is often regarded as a street and road course specialist. While Power wrapped up IndyCar’s road course title at Motegi last weekend, he is only third in the oval standings – 19 points behind Franchitti and 36 down on leader Scott Dixon.
Franchitti rues ‘stupid move’
September 18th, 2011
Dario Franchitti has accepted full responsibility for the collision that cost him the IndyCar championship lead at Motegi, and apologised to the other drivers involved. The reigning champion tagged Ryan Briscoe into a spin at a restart just before the halfway point of today’s race
Castroneves gets post-race penalty
September 18th, 2011
Helio Castroneves has lost his seventh place at Motegi for passing JR Hildebrand under yellow on the final lap of the race. The Brazilian drops to 22nd as a result, but more significantly the penalty elevates Dario Franchitti to eighth – which brings the champion’s deficit to new series leader Will Power down to 11 points with two races to go. Franchitti lost the IndyCar championship lead to Power today when the Australian finished second behind Scott Dixon, while Franchitti was delayed when he triggered a multi-car collision at a mid-race restart.
Dixon takes Motegi victory
September 18th, 2011
Scott Dixon edged away from Will Power to win the final Motegi IndyCar race, as Power took the points lead after title rival Dario Franchitti was involved in a collision. Ganassi driver Dixon headed Power’s Penske Dallara throughout the 63 laps, pulling away a little in the closing stages after they had run a second or so apart for most of the distance. But any frustration Power felt at being unable to get on terms with Dixon was alleviated by knowledge of Franchitti’s messy day
Dixon beats Power to Motegi pole
September 17th, 2011
Scott Dixon denied Will Power pole position for the IndyCar Series’ Motegi round, but Power will still start seven places ahead of title rival Dario Franchitti, who could only manage ninth. The result is only the second time all year that Penske driver Power has been beaten to pole on a road course, with Dixon (Ganassi) having already been the man who ended his pole streak at Lexington last month. Power hung back early in the Fast Six session, letting his rivals fight for provisional pole
Dixon quickest in practice two
September 17th, 2011
Scott Dixon led his team-mate Dario Franchitti in a Ganassi one-two in the first of Saturday’s IndyCar practice sessions at Motegi. Dixon left it late, setting a 1m38.7710s with one of the final laps of the morning and beating Franchitti by a relatively comfortable 0.3976 seconds in a session where the entire 26-car field was covered by 1.6s. Franchitti had been in front since deposing title rival Will Power (Penske) in the early stages.
Indy drivers laud Motegi road course
September 16th, 2011
Leading IndyCar drivers have praised the Motegi road course as one of the most impressive tracks on the series’ calendar. This season’s event is the last time IndyCar will race at Motegi, which has been on the schedule since 2003, and had previously hosted Camp Car from 1998 to 2002. Damage to the usual oval during March’s horrific earthquake in Japan meant a one-off switch to the 2.983-mile road course at the venue for Motegi’s IndyCar swansong
Power quickest on Friday in Japan
September 16th, 2011
Will Power was quickest in Friday practice as the IndyCar Series drivers got to grips with the Motegi road course for the first time. With Helio Castroneves second and Ryan Briscoe fourth, only Newman/Haas’ James Hinchcliffe prevented an all-Penske top three. Hinchcliffe had been quickest going into the closing stages, before Castroneves grabbed the top spot with a 1m39.5965s.
Wheldon to race at Vegas
September 14th, 2011
Dan Wheldon will race at the IndyCar finale at Las Vegas as part of a $5million dollar challenge set-up by race and championship organisers. The 33-year-old Briton dramatically won the Indianapolis 500 on what was his only IndyCar appearance so far this season, and will drive a car jointly-entered by Bryan Herta Autosport and Sam Schmidt Motorsports. Regardless of his practice speed, Wheldon will start the race from the back of the grid, but will win the $5 million if he can take victory in the race.
De Oliveira joins Conquest for Motegi
September 12th, 2011
Brazilian Joao Paulo de Oliveira will join the Conquest Racing team for the IndyCar round at Motegi this weekend. The 30-year-old has made a name for himself in Japan over the past years, clinching the 2010 Formula Nippon championship. He is a two-time winner at the Motegi road course where the IndyCar race will take place on.
