IndyCar close to confirming China
August 28th, 2011
IndyCar is close to confirming the addition of a race in China to its 2012 schedule. The series has been in talks about a Chinese event for some time, and president of IndyCar’s commercial division Terry Angstadt said that a deal for a race in the eastern port city of Qingdao, which hosted the sailing events for the 2008 Olympics, was on the verge of being finalised.
Power on pole at Sears Point
August 27th, 2011
Will Power led an all-Penske top three to take pole position for Sunday’s IndyCar race at Sears Point with a dominant performance in qualifying. Power, who won at the California road course last year, set the benchmark with a 1m18.6017s effort that proved well beyond the reach of any of his rivals.
IndyCar boss backs Barnhart
August 27th, 2011
IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard has said that the series’ president of race operations Brian Barnhart has his full support, despite the controversy surrounding the finish to the New Hampshire race a fortnight ago. Barnhart found himself the subject of widespread criticism after attempting to restart the race in wet conditions while the cars were fitted with slicks; a call that resulted in several drivers losing control and crashing. He later took full responsibility for the decision and admitted his error, but the incident still left question marks over whether he could regain the confidence of the teams and drivers.
Plowman tops Sears Point practice
August 27th, 2011
Martin Plowman was a surprise pace-setter in the second IndyCar practice session at Sears Point on Saturday.
Power: Sears Point key to title race
August 27th, 2011
Will Power believes that this weekend’s IndyCar race at Sears Point is key to keeping his hopes of reeling in Dario Franchitti’s points lead alive. Franchitti heads into the weekend with a 47-point buffer over Power with five races to go, and Power – who won the Sonoma race last year – said that a good result on Sunday will be vital if he is to stay in the hunt. “[The championship] is going to come down to who is going to make the least amount of mistakes,” the Penske driver said.
Franchitti tops opening session
August 26th, 2011
Dario Franchitti topped the opening IndyCar practice session for this weekend’s round at Sears Point. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver managed a best time of 1m19.427s around the California road course, putting him just 0.136s ahead of his chief title rival Will Power.
Pagenaud steps in for de Silvestro
August 26th, 2011
Simon Pagenaud has been drafted in as a last-minute replacement for Simona de Silvestro at HVM Racing for today’s opening IndyCar practice session at Sonoma after the Swiss driver encountered problems while attempting to re-enter the US from Switzerland.

Ho-Pin Tung will become the first Chinese driver to start an IndyCar Series race when he makes his debut in the championship at Sears Point this weekend.
Power fined heavily over outburst
August 25th, 2011
Will Power has been fined US$30,000 and put on probation for the rest of the season following his outburst against IndyCar race officials at the last round at New Hampshire. The Penske driver ended up in the wall after trying to avoid Danica Patrick’s spinning car when the race was restarted in wet conditions eight laps from the end. After remonstrating with officials from inside the car, he later branded their actions as “disgraceful” during a TV interview and said that resuming the event in such conditions had put drivers in serious danger
Willy T. Ribbs to return to racing
August 25th, 2011
Former IndyCar driver Willy T. Ribbs will return to racing in the Indy Lights street race at Baltimore on September 4
Hunter-Reay’s Loudon win upheld
August 24th, 2011
Ryan Hunter-Reay’s controversial victory at New Hampshire has been upheld after a three-man IndyCar panel denied protests lodged by the Newman/Haas and Chip Ganassi Racing squads. Hunter-Reay was declared the winner by race organisers, but controversy reigned as Oriol Servia (Newman/Haas) and Scott Dixon (Ganassi) passed him on the final restart prior to the race being halted. Several cars lost control on that final restart however, which was made in wet conditions that several drivers and teams thought too much to return to racing.
Mann diagnosed with back injury
August 22nd, 2011
Pippa Mann has been diagnosed with a back fracture following her heavy practice crash during the New Hampshire IndyCar event earlier this month. The 28-year-old Briton, who was making her debut for the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team at the oval – after competing for Conquest Racing at the Indianapolis 500 – was hospitalised following the accident and forced to missed the race as a result.
Andretti backs Power’s outburst
August 20th, 2011
American racing legend Mario Andretti believes that Will Power’s outburst following last weekend’s controversial finish to the Loudon IndyCar Series race will not harm the series’ image. Power was caught on camera making an angry gesture towards race control after the field was ordered to restart on a wet track with a few laps to go, triggering a multi-car accident. This was followed up with an outburst on TV directed towards IndyCar president of competition Brian Barnhart.
IndyCar sets panel for protest hearing
August 18th, 2011
IndyCar president of competition Brian Barnhart has revealed the identity of the panel called to hear the protests lodged by Newman/Haas and Ganassi against Ryan Hunter-Reay’s victory in last week’s controversial finish to the Indy 225 at New Hampshire. NH Motor Speedway general manager Jerry Gappens, USAC chairman Jeff Stoops and former USAC president Rollie Helmling will form the three-man committee that will rule on the protests on August 23. Organisers declared Andretti Autosport’s Hunter-Reay the winner of the race, but the two rival teams contested the result because their drivers Oriol Servia (Newman/Haas) and Scott Dixon (Ganassi) had passed the #28 machine on the final restart prior to the race being halted.
New Hampshire protests to go ahead
August 17th, 2011
IndyCar has confirmed that it will hear protests next week filed by Newman/Haas and Ganassi following Ryan Hunter-Reay’s controversial victory in the Indy 225 at New Hampshire last weekend. Oriol Servia and Scott Dixon both passed erstwhile leader Hunter-Reay on the final restart of the rain-interrupted event, only for the race to go back immediately back to yellow as several cars lost purchase on the cold and damp surface. It was never restarted
Pantano stands in for Wilson at D and R
August 17th, 2011
Former Formula 1 driver Giorgio Pantano will stand in for the injured Justin Wilson in the next two rounds of the IndyCar Series at Sears Point and the Baltimore street circuit.
Power slides again in Rankings
August 15th, 2011
Will Power may have closed the gap to championship leader Dario Franchitti at New Hampshire, but he couldn’t prevent a fall down the Castrol EDGE Rankings for a second consecutive week. The Australian finished fifth in a farcical end to the race, with stewards deciding to restart despite wet and largely undriveable conditions. The result saw him close to within 50 points of Dario Franchitti in the championship, the Scot having earlier crashed from the lead on lap 118
Dixon sympathetic for Barnhart
August 15th, 2011
Scott Dixon says that he has some sympathy for the predicament that IndyCar president of competition Brian Barnhart was in when he made the controversial call to restart yesterday’s race at New Hampshire despite the wet conditions.
Hunter-Reay says win still satisfying
August 14th, 2011
Ryan Hunter-Reay said his first win of the season at New Hampshire was still satisfying despite the confusing circumstances in which it was finally confirmed. Having assumed control of the race following Dario Franchitti’s crash, Hunter-Reay led the field at the final, controversial restart but lost out to Oriol Servia and Scott Dixon after a poor initial getaway. He then had to wait in the pit-lane as race officials pondered whether to reset the race or restart for the final five laps, before finally being confirmed as the winner as – much to Servia’s chargrin – they elected to finish the race using each driver’s position prior to the wet restart
Power slams IndyCar officials
August 14th, 2011
Will Power delivered a scathing verdict on the IndyCar officials and their decision to restart the race in wet conditions eight laps from the end. Power, running fifth at the time, was caught out as Danica Patrick spun on his outside, and had little room – or grip – to manoeuvre, eventually ending up in the wall with a gaggle of other cars
