Three’s a Charm

Season One of the 2012 inRacingNews Challenge is in the books, and for the first time in its history, three champions have been crowned. After five seasons of multi-class competition between the SpecRacer Fords and Pontiac Solstices, the series added the Mazda MX-5 Roadster for 2012, and the online racing competition has been just as intense. This year’s three overall champions were Marius Golombeck in Solstice, Mitch Weatherly in SRF, and Dylan Sharman in Mazda. Golombeck’s 13 wins in 13 starts were good for 1531 points, giving him a 254-point advantage on second-place Chris Hughson and 257 points on third-place Bryan J Miller. Weatherly’s battle was much closer, as he only beat second-place Roope Turkkila by 90 points, and eight drivers came within 250 points of the crown. But the [...]

Strategy Sends Sheehan to Richmond Victory

by Jason Lofing on May 2nd, 2012

Sheehan burns his remaining virtual rubber celebrating his Richmond win.

Steve Sheehan knows what it is like to be on the wrong end of a strategy call, but Tuesday night at Richmond International Raceway, it was Sheehan who outsmarted everyone en route to win Round Six of the 2012 NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship.  The veteran sim racer stayed out on old tires under a late race yellow when nearly every other car pitted, giving him a lead he held to the finish ahead of John Gorlinsky, Nick Ottinger and Josh Berry. Sheehan first took the lead on Lap 144 of 200, but it was the decision not to pit with the rest of the field on Lap 168 that put him in position to win. Alex Warren, Joshua Laughton and Florian Godard tried the same strategy, but were unable [...]

Luis grabbed the lead at the start, never looked back en route to victory and the iGPWCS lead.

A dramatic 83 laps of the virtual Okayama International, saw Hugo Luis claim his second victory of the season in the fifth round of  the iRacing.com World Championship Grand Prix Series. With erstwhile championship points leader Greger Huttu crashing-out in the early stages of the online race, the battle for the 2012 title is now wide open, with My3id’s Luis atop the standings by a slender six-points. Team Redline’s Huttu arrived at Okayama looking to continue a rich run of form that saw him win three of the first four races of the season.  Although he took pole position with a time of 1:05.739, the 2010 World Champion faced problems from the moment the green flag dropped. Dealing with a handful of wheel-spin, the Finn could only watch as he [...]

The Fun Factory Returns

The fun is back! The 2012 S2 Radical Racing Challenge kicks-off at Watkins Glen.

With words such as “Boy did I have fun”, “The car feels awesome now”, “Always felt in Control” and most telling “Love the new Radical, feels FANTASTIC!” it’s clear that in a patch which listed absolutely no specific changes, the Radical has returned to its entertaining best, after a season where its edgyness and less than optimum default setups probably put-off a lot of drivers after a record breaking 2011 Season 4. That isn’t to say that the first season with the NTM was a disaster; indeed the Radical managed to post one of its best attendance figures, but after the dizzy heights of the previous season the feeling was that the wheel at fallen off somewhat. This was despite the community growing stronger and adapting quickly to the NTM. [...]

It will be a new look field in the Classic Teams Championship this time around.

Classic Teams Championship Preview Season 2 2012 of the Lotus 79 based Classic Teams Championship (CTC) is just around the corner, and for the first time it will be based upon the 1979 F1 championship season. Team Surtees and Team Hesketh may have disappeared but their places have been taken by Autodelta Alfa Romeo and Team Kauhsen. Back in 1979 Ferrari claimed the manufacturers title (after being pushed all the way by Williams and Ligier) as well as the drivers title with Jody Scheckter. Will history repeat itself? Can five time champion Gernot Fritsche, supported by series returnee Bronislav Robonek and series rookie Sam Winemiller, take Ferrari to both titles? Six to Watch Kalle Ruokola has moved from Brabham to Williams, he is more than capable of unseating Fritsche. He [...]

Globe Trotters

Weeks 9 and 10 took the iRacing.com Prototype and GT Challenge outside of North America for the final time this season, to a pair of tracks 10,000 miles apart in opposite hemispheres. Their track layouts once again provided the globe-trotting sim racers with contrast from week-to-week as Silverstone’s wide, historic airfield layout in the English countryside differs radically from the tighter, more undulating Phillip Island venue on the south Australian coastline. Silverstone would be the final week with the 70 minute open setup race length, Phillip Island’s 45 minute duration also the last time it would be used this season.  The Thursday and Friday 2000 GMT “hot split” concept for GT drivers continued, however with European daylight savings many drivers also took part in the earlier online race as well. Round 5 of the iRacing.com Grand Prix World Championship Series will be broadcast iRacing Live on Saturday, April 28 starting at 7 pm EDT (22:00 GMT).  On tap are 83 laps of the 11 turn, 2.314 mile Okayama International Circuit. After last season’s up and down defense of his 2010 championship, Greger Huttu has returned to dominant form this year with three wins in four outings for a score of 185 points.  With a win of his own and two runner-up finishes returning champion Hugo Luis (143) is doing his best to keep Huttu honest, while Luke McLean (113) and Jaroslav Honzik (102) are the only other sim racers to have breached the century mark so far. Can Huttu make it four of five?  Can Luis win again and cut [...]

It’s a Wrap

Kevin King was king of the hill in Kentucky, collecting 344 points for Sunday's win.

With Kentucky Motor Speedway now in the books, the 2012 Season One NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series (NiCAS) season is a wrap. A season that saw outstanding participation in the top level oval car in the world of online racing, and reached new heights for weekly averages will certainly be one to remember for a long time to come. Drivers from all over the world flocked to the series in hopes of reaching the NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series (NiPS), giving themselves a chance to earn the coveted World Championship. One of the best championship battles in recent memory, if not ever, took place between Jared Crawford and the up and coming Jason Karlavige. It ended with Crawford on top by a slim 58 points. Along with the championship, Crawford earns [...]

The iRacing.com Grand Prix Series (iGPS) returned to the “Home of British Motor Racing” – Silverstone Circuit for the final race of the 12 week long iGPS Season 1. A historical track which hosted its first Britsh Grand Prix in 1948, Silverstone has been staged on the F1 calendar every year since 1987 and the pedigree hasn’t changed – still a blend of reputable high speed corners that put great stress on the drivers and make overtaking difficult. Italian Max Dell’Orco led the way again in qualifying, taking his 4th pole in 5 races, closely ahead of Simon Cattell with Wolfgang Reip in third. Pierre Urbizu followed the trio in fourth and fellow Frenchman Laurent Beteille took the fifth fastest qualifying time of the week after some extremely tight lap [...]

Richard Hamstead

The final round of the  iRacing.com V8 Supercars Series presented by BigPond headed to the United Kingdom to race around the world famous Oulton Park circuit.  For the teams and drivers it was the first time they had driven on Oulton’s 4.2km International Circuit.  Heading into the final week Richard Hamstead had only a two point lead in the championship and as it came to race day he found himself sitting on the grid in second place just behind Rens Broekman and one place in front of the man he had to beat for the title: Mitchell McLeod. McLeod got the better of Richard Hamstead in Race One when going through Turn Four, Hamstead blew his motor which gave McLeod a big chance to win the title taking a 14 [...]

Although Mungin dominated the points race, the races themselves were up for grabs.

While James Poleske will go down in the books as finishing off 2012 Season One with the most points in the final two weeks of the NASCAR iRacing.com Tour Modified Series (NiTMS) season, it will be Giovanni Mungin who will have his name etched on the championship trophy. Mungin was officially crowned the champion after the 12-week online racing season ended Saturday night, which is the fourth in the row for the Wide Open Racing team. Poleske was the one who put the most points up on the board in Week Eleven and Twelve competition at the New Hampshire Motor and Thompson International Speedway’s, respectively. The big race on the “Magic Mile” of New Hampshire Motor Speedway took place on April 12th in which Poleske led 11 of the 75 [...]

Movin’ on Up

Charlotte Motor Speedway hosts two rounds of the inRacingNews Challenge during 2012 Season 1: the fifth and the 11th. The latter, the penultimate round of the schedule, saw drivers in all three classes – Pontiac Solstice, SpecRacer Ford, and Mazda MX-5 Roadster – attempting to post a strong week in order to throw out a weaker showing from earlier in the season. With only a driver’s best eight of 12 rounds counting in the final standings, anyone with a strong finish at Charlotte could eliminate an off week and move-up the ranks. Once again, Dylan Sharman paced the Mazda class with 180 points, 35 more than second-place Laurent Beteille. Meanwhile, rookie Omar Soto scored wins in both SRF starts to score an eight point victory on the week over Nicholas [...]

You Can Go Home Again

Summit Point Raceway is the de facto home track of the inRacingNews Challenge, hosting four of the 12 rounds on the schedule on its various layouts. Week 10 marks the fourth and final appearance, as the Pontiac Solstices, SpecRacer Fords and Mazda MX-5 Roadsters of the series jostle for position in the final stages of the online racing championship. Dylan Sharman capped-off yet another class-leading week in Mazda with a class-leading 153 points, scoring the win from the pole in all four of his starts. Tim Bone topped a hotly-contested week in SRF with 155 points, beating Roope Turkkila by a single point and Niccolo Cedrati by only six. Finally, in Solstice, Bryan J Miller’s 168-point performance beat Chris Hughson by 12 points, as each sim racer only failed to [...]

Week Four of the iRacing.com Skip Barber Racing School Premier Series kicked-off in the small town of Braselton, Georgia, home of Road Atlanta.  The 12 turn, 2.54 mile road course proved to be an exciting and challenging configuration for the 84 sim racers who competed this week as some new names and upsets filled the podium positions in the five official online races of the week. The first race of the week during the 10:00 GMT timeslot produced the most exciting finish of the week.  The 21 drivers who elected to compete combined their iRating for the highest Strength of Field (SoF) race of the week at 2427. The Flawless Floridian (aka Christian Aranha) started on the pole and led the field to green. Two laps in, Aranha made his [...]

Texas Tune-Up

The NiSWC stars came out to play at TMS, with Alfalla (1) and Kevin King (?) each visiting Victory Lane.

In what proved to be a tune-up week for many of the top NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship (NiSWC) drivers, the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series (NiCAS) made its way down south to Texas Motor Speedway for Week 11 of 2012 Season One. Being held a week before the NiSWC took to the high banks of TMS, it was a great opportunity for drivers to fine tune their setups under racing conditions before next week’s big race. This also provides more casual NiCAS competitors the challenge to race among the best the online racing sim has to offer. Both Jared Crawford and Jason Karlavige took the week off, as the NiCAS Division One Championship is all but decided. With Crawford out it opened the door for NiSWC driver Robert Hall [...]

Jason Karlavige leading the race.

The Nascar iRacing.com Class B Series traveled to Texas Motor Speedway for Week 11 of Season One 2012. As the season winds down, the battle for the Top Five heats up. There will be a new NiCBS champion but who will it be? Phil Juhring (New Jersey) looked to cement his position at the top while others like Brad Mahar (New England) make last minute efforts to knock Juhring off the top. During Week 11, 1001 sim racers attempted at least one race while 350 drivers attempted at least one lap in qualifying. The high Strength of Field race for Week 11 took place Thursday night. The race had 28 drivers and SoF of 4596, which pays 294 points to win. Jason Karlavige (Pennsylvania) dominated the race starting on the [...]

Penultimate round of iGPS

For the penultimate week of Season 1, the iRacing.com Grand Prix Series (iGPS) teams and drivers headed off to Sebring International Raceway. The circuit – 3.7 miles (6.0 km) long and compromising of seventeen turns – features long straights and a hybrid of high speed and technical low speed corners. Although the course offers very little elevation change there are several cambered corners on the surface adding to the challenge laying ahead for the drivers piloting their 800 horsepower V8-powered Williams FW31′s. Even as the iGPS cohered with the Drivers World Championships (DWC) this week – Sunday saw only two Strength of Field (SoF) races with the end of the season taking its toll. Both races saw Max Dell’Orco starting from his usual pole position slot, despite DWC driver Luke [...]
