    iRacing.com Series Writer
Jason is 21 years old and was born and raised in Elk Grove. California. A big time NASCAR fan, he hasn’t missed a race on Sunday in years. Lofing is also a huge San Fransisco Giants fan and tries to take in at least a couple games a year. Other than sim racing, his biggest (and far more expensive!) hobby is photography. Although he is rather new to sim racing, Lofing has already accomplished some pretty impressive results, qualifying for the 2011 iRacing Oval Pro Series in Season 1, 2011, winning the inaugural Landon Cassill Qualifying Challenge and finishing runner-up in the second one.
  • Ray Bryden
    Technical contributor
Ray grew up in Nova Scotia, which means he’s a hockey nut, but in Nova Scotia’s two non-winter months he had to find other diversions, which meant watching F1 racing on weekends with his dad and brothers. Without the resources to get started in racing, he gravitated to computer versions of racing – first Atari games like Pole Position, followed by PC racing games like Indianapolis 500: The Simulation. Dozens of others came and went, until Grand Prix Legends came along and he decided sim-racing was his official hobby. Years were spent enjoying this both offline and online until a few years of fatherhood took priority. When free-time reappeared he heard about iRacing and signed up in 2008 and became so involved in the service that he wrote one of the first books on the subject of sim-racing, iRacing Paddock. When not writing for inRacingNews.com, his main occupation is as a research associate with Saint-Gobain working on advanced ceramic materials.

Following the move to the State of Victoria he raced Road Race Karts (“Superkarts” as they are known in Australia) in the popular Rotax class, competing at Phillip Island, Oran Park, Mallala, Wakefield Park, Eastern Creek, Calder Park, Sandown and Winton. It was during this time he met former Australian F2 champion and inventor of Australia’s first, and most prolific race simulator rig, Jon Crooke. To Sleep, Perchance to Dream . . . and Go Faster

by Chris Hall on November 19th, 2011

704
She's getting ready to kick your butt on iRacing tomorrow . . .

Looking for those extra tenths? Try sleeping on it. At its fundamental basics, racing is about being the fastest driver on the track on a given day. It sounds simple, but when you extrapolate that to the thousands of competitors on iRacing, it soon becomes apparent the battle isn’t just with fellow competitors, but with the track that rolls out ahead. Because to be at the top in virtual or real motorsport, means being the one to hustle their car around x miles of circuit the fastest. Whether it’s practice, qualifying or racing, time is one of the governing indicators of who will rise to the top of the pile. In the search for those few extra tenths of a second, sim-racers have been known to spend a small fortune [...]

Gooden, Quantum Look Towards 2012 After F2000 Test

Quantum Racing Services invited their F1600 Championship Series star, Wyatt Gooden, to a private test last week at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit for his first run in the team’s race-winning Van Diemen F2000 chassis. It was an opportunity the Ohio native could not pass up, and he proved once again to be up for the challenge. Wyatt was a stellar four-for-four in F1600 competition this year, sweeping double-header race weekends at both Mid-Ohio and Watkins Glen in his only appearances in the new series. He also had three poles and three fastest race laps, all in his first year of open-wheel racing. His immediate success impressed his competitors, as well as the iRacing community, which Wyatt has used as a training ground throughout his brief career. The 1.8-mile Hallett circuit, [...]

iRacer Profile – Brandon Buchberger

by David Phillips on November 19th, 2011

motorsport simulation

Brandon Buchberger’s name may not quite be synonymous with the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series, but that’s not for wanting of trying – or a lack of results – on the part of the Sugar Grove, IL resident.  Consider that, since first running the NiCCS seriously in 2009, Season 4, Buchberger has never finished worse than ninth in the overall standings; or that he’s amassed nearly 80 wins in that stretch. True, the NiCCS title has been elusive – so far – the 24 year old Buchberger wheeled his Silverado into the series points lead in the early going on the strength of three wins in six starts, to enjoy a narrow edge on rivals Alex Warren and Tyler D Hudson.   A frontrunner in the GSRacing.net Truck Series league, Buchberger [...]

‘Round the Boot at The Glen

by Dennis Grebe on November 18th, 2011

173
hello

After Season 4′s initial race at Sebring, the iRacing.com Prototype and GT Challenge set forth along the East Coast to the state of New York, where it took to Round 2 at Watkins Glen Intenational. In keeping with the modern theme of the online racing series, the configuration chosen was the Full Course including the so-called “Boot.” LMP2: HPD ARX-01c After a very competitive start to the championship, Week 2 proved to be very high scoring once again, but this time produced a clear winner. David Williams (England) defended his lead in style with another weekly top score at an impressive 246 points in Saturday’s 8.00pm (UTC) race – against a field of worthy and competitive opponents with every one of the 15 drivers in his class having an iRating [...]

Fun in the Sun

by Michael Conti on November 18th, 2011

Karlavige led Whitten and David Cater in the early going on Friday.

The NASCAR iRacing.com Class B Series (NiCBS) tackled perpetually sunny Phoenix International Raceway for Week 2 of the online racing series’ 12 week season. PIR featured a lot of great sim racing, probably some of the most intense racing that this series has seen so far this season. Because of the track’s short, flat layout, bumping and banging was the norm for the week which in turn brought-out the trusty iRacing Mustang Pace Car so often during the course of the week that iRacing’s virtual mechanics had to work overtime performing routine maintenance. The highest Strength of Field (SoF) race this past week came on Friday night. The 3344 SoF event was definitely a great one to watch and take part in, as the intensity level was high because the [...]

Scanning What’s in Store for iRacing with Tony Gardner

by Nick Neben on November 18th, 2011

6,013
The Long Beach spline is finished . . . now comes the tricky part!

One of the biggest selling points in iRacing for me is the laser-scanned tracks.  As a sim-racer I may not benefit from knowing each bump and nuance of the real-world track, but knowing what I am driving from my living room is accurate down to the millimeter to what I see drivers racing on TV and in person adds to my experience overall. This unique and authentic feel that you can only get from laser-scanning adds so much to each track within the iRacing service. Tony Gardner, president of iRacing.com, recently provided me with some insights to the process of how the company decided on laser-scanning, the process of signing tracks, what goes into the decision on what tracks are brought into the service for the members and the status [...]

Same Old PIR

by Jameson Spies on November 17th, 2011

As ever, the NiCAS competitors found grip was at a premium at PIR.

Week 2 of the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series (NiCAS) took competitors to the very tricky Phoenix International Raceway. Unlike their physical world counterparts, iRacing.com members had to tackled the slick, old, sun baked pavement and traditional PIR configuration. Getting the 750+ horsepower to find traction on the exit of the greasy corners would be key for anyone hopeful of finding victory lane. The tougher the track the more setup is key to success, especially when there isn’t the slightest amount of grip. Teammates held-down the top five positions in the weekly standings, as they dialed-in their NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series (NiPS) setups. Marcus Lindsey led the charge with 311 points, leading 89 of the 110 laps in his only start on Monday. Daniel Pope II came home 1.171 seconds [...]

O’Keefe to the Win at the Glen

Kenneth O’Keefe (Smithville, ON) led the final 16 laps en route to victory in the Gale Force Suspension 55 at Watkins Glen International Speedway Monday night in the only road course event on the GSRacing.net Truck Series schedule. O’Keefe, who started in 29th place had his work cut out for him from the drop of the green flag after jumping the start and having to serve a stop and go penalty as a consequence. But O’Keefe charged back to the front, then outran series regular Brandon Williamson (Powder Springs, GA) at the end of the race to defeating the #15 truck by over two seconds. Nick Ottinger (Claremont, NC) finished third in a Gale Force Suspension-sponsored truck, while Dylan Duval (Halifax, NS) and Josh Berry (Mooresville, NC) completed the top [...]

Moriarty Muscles to SoBo Win

by Tim Terry on November 16th, 2011

Nearly 700 iRacers took the green flag in Late Model action at SoBo.

Monroe, WA’s Trenton Moriarity has established himself as an early favorite in the iRacing.com Late Model Tour (iLMT) division in 2011 Season 4. Moriarity scored the overall victory on Week 2 of the series at the South Boston Speedway, defeating 671 other sim racers in the quest for glory on the popular iRacing short track car. Moriarity tipped the scales his way with a victory on Thursday during a 3009 Strength of Field (sof) race. The 65 lap affair saw Moriarity gap second place Kevin Burris by over three seconds at the finish. Joshua Van Winkle was third in the race, followed by Dylan Roe and Late Model hotshoe Kevin J Myers. David Rattler started on the pole and led the first 24 circuits before relinquishing the lead to Moriarity [...]

Tillmann Impressive In First RSR Start

004

It is funny how things turn out.  Just as drivers in the Red Sox Racing League’s 2011 F1 Season Three lineup started to believe Brad Vincent was invincible, along comes a new member to the league who turns conventional wisdom upside down.  At this week’s event, league newcomer Christine Marie Tillmann began her RSR career the same way Vincent did, with an impressive wire-to-wire victory.  Thirteen RSR drivers made the trip to central Florida to participate in the “lesstuna.com Presents F1 at Sebring”, at the technically challenging Sebring International Raceway.  With seventeen corners and a long 3.7 mile layout, the course offers several passing zones.  It also offers some of the most dangerous high speed corners on the schedule.  Designed around hard concrete airport runways, the track requires cars to [...]

Lindsey Rebounds at Homestead

by Jason Lofing on November 16th, 2011

109
Lindsey took advantage of a late restart to beat Pope for his second win of the season.

Marcus Lindsey’s troubled 24th place finish last week at Phoenix International Raceway seems like the distant past after he grabbed his second win of the young 2011 NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series (NiPS) season at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Tuesday evening. Unlike his win in the season opener at Texas, Lindsey did not have the car to beat in South Florida.  Instead, he was in the right place at the right time on a late restart and took full advantage of the opportunity to lead Daniel Pope II and Michael Conti across the finish line. The bulk of the online race was led not by Lindsey, but by teammates Pope and Richie Davidowitz. After two quick cautions to open the action, the race went green for nearly the rest of the 133 [...]

Ottinger’s Dominance Continues

by Allen Krier on November 15th, 2011

The Street Stocks traveled to Thompson International Speedway for Week 2 of 2011 Season 4.

For Week Two of Season 4, the iRacing.com Street Stock Series made its way to Thompson International Speedway. Three time defending champion Nick Ottinger (Carolina), who has not lost a points paying Street Stock race since Week Six of Season 2, continued his dominant ways at Thompson as sim racers look to dethrone the champ. Weekly High Strength of Field The high Strength of Field (SoF) race for Week two took place on Sunday night and had an SoF of 3112, which payed 189 points to win. Ottinger brought home the win by over seven seconds as he brought his win streak up to 18 races. Brandon Chretien (New York) came home in the second position, after starting second, and received 170 points for his efforts. Daniel L Carter (Mid-South), [...]

41 drivers took part in the 2 hour pre-race practice session leading up to the two lap qualifying session prior to the start of the opening race of Season #5 of the Big Red Racing, Fixed Setup Indycar Series held for the first time under the lights at Iowa Speedway, The BRR Iowa 175. Randy Freeman won the pole for the 175 lap event, posting a fast time of 18.145 seconds in his full fuel-laden vehicle, beating Eric Vanek, and Series Admin, Vincent Sciuto, who both ran an 18.166, by 2/100s of a second. Kerkhof The King of Okayama

by Chris Hall on November 14th, 2011

209
Kerkhof motored to a second consecutive win and a 100% winning average in the iPSRR.

In a hard-fought 83 laps around the Okayama International Circuit, Atze Kerkhof secured his second outright victory in the iRacing.com Pro Series Road Racing to further extend his lead at the top of the leader-board. With a brace of races now complete, Kerkhof’s is the only name to adorn the the winners column following another formidable driving display in his bid to reach the 2012 iRacing.com NVIDIA Grand Prix Series. Although Kerkhof was pipped to pole position by Martin Kronke, who set a time of 1:06.416 during his solitary qualifying run, Team Redline’s newest member soon redressed the balance by snatching the lead at the opening corner. “The start was not one of my best to be honest,” conceded Kronke. “I released the clutch a little bit too fast and [...]

Engelhart in at Irwindale

by Tim Terry on November 14th, 2011

60
The Tour Mods opened Season 4 with a memorable week at Irwindale.

They say one race could change the complexion of a season long championship. The top split race of Week One in 2011 Season Four on the iRacing.com Tour Modified Series (iTMS) may very well be looked back upon in 12 weeks as that online race. The series visited Toyota Speedway at Irwindale for Round One of the 12 round tour and it was two former series champions showing the way in California. Herb Engelhart was the winner when the drivers took to the track for Thursday’s 3641 Strength of Field (sof) race. Engelhart led 51 of the 100 laps in the event to take the win over teammate and reigning Tour Modified champion Brandon Salvatore. The one lead change happened between the two when Salvatore lost the lead he enjoyed [...]

Down is already making a run for it on Lap Three

Season 4 week 2 of the iRacing V8 Supercar Series by Bigpond Sport moved to the hills of Sonoma and the undulations of Infineon Raceway For race 1, series leader Madison Down took pole by barely 1/100ths of a second from his shadow Mitch McLeod for Tatts.com Racing. Rens Broekman in turn was another 1/100th back in third. Real world racer Scott McLaughlin was back into the sim world for another go, nabbing fourth. Next was the improving Richard Hamstead, and behind them, making a welcome return to the “main game” was XSG’s Michael McCabe. Filling out the top ten was Cal Whatmore, Michael Clark, Down’s TTR teammate Beau Cubis and Lewis Dodimead. Down lead the early laps as expected, but Broekman did him a huge favour by trumping McLeod [...]

Gooden Plenty III

by Wyatt Gooden on November 13th, 2011

Wyatt was in familiar territory at the Glen . . . the winner's circle.

iRacing’s Wyatt Gooden concluded a remarkable season of racing at Watkins Glen in October, taking his third and fourth wins in as many races in the SCCA F1600 Formula F Championship.  Not bad for a guy who had never raced an open wheel car before this summer’s debut at Mid-Ohio . . . even if one of those wins at the Glen was blessed with a little racing luck – Ed. The journey started well before the race weekend began. I flew down to Oklahoma City to meet with Quantum Racing Services’ Wendell and Slade Miller on Sunday (one week before the race). Oddly similar to the last trip before Mid-Ohio, I got to enjoy more delays because of weather . . . this time in Houston of all places! [...]

iRacer Profile – Rens Broekman

motorsport simulations

You might say Rens Broekman is something of a Stranger in a Strange Land.  Most Mondays finds him competing in iRacing.com’s V8 Supercar Series.  In and of itself that hardly qualilfies Broekman as a stranger.  But when you consider that he lives in The Netherlands and that virtually everyone he’s competing against in his nFinity eSports Ford Falcon hails from Australia or New Zealand, Broekman definitely qualifies as a bit of an outsider; make that a “fast” outsider.  After nabbing second place in the 2011 Season 2 racing standings, Broekman grabbed the Season 3 Time Trial championship and finished third in the racing standings – the only iRacer from outside the Antipodes to finish in the top 15. Season 4 again finds Broekman once again going head-to-head with V8 rivals [...]

Berry Brings the Heat to Texas

by Tim Terry on November 11th, 2011

127
Texas Motor Speedway attracted nearly 1700 starters in Week 1 of the 2011 Season 4 NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series.

NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship driver Josh Berry spent one of the first “off weeks” of that season by lightning up the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series during the first round of the 2011 Season Four campaign. Berry took the big online racing win of the week at Texas Motor Speedway and will go into Week Two as the point leader in the series. In fact, seven of the top eight spots on the week were occupied by “black stripes,” topped by Berry and his 250 point performance on Thursday in a 4007 Strength of Field (sof) race. Berry took the win by leading 33 of 90 laps after working his way up from the sixth position. Daniel Pope II was second, followed by Brad Wright, Heath Hindman and Thomas [...]
