Rockenfeller wants winning return
July 1st, 2011
Mike Rockenfeller has targeted a return to race-winning form in the DTM this weekend on his comeback following his huge accident in the Le Mans 24 Hours. The Audi driver, who took his maiden DTM win earlier this year at Zandvoort, was forced to sit out the last round of the German series at Lausitz as he was still recovering from his horrific crash in the R18 prototype at Le Mans. A decision on his fitness to race this weekend at the Norisring was left until the last minute, but Rockenfeller was cleared to compete and set the 11th fastest time in Friday’s free practice session after completing 45 laps.
Ekstrom heads practice at Norisring
July 1st, 2011
Mattias Ekstrom grabbed top spot in the first DTM free practice session of the weekend at the Norisring with his final lap of the session. The Swede was set to end Friday’s practice in second place after a couple of attempts in the final minutes had fallen short of the time set by his Abt Audi team-mate Oliver Jarvis.
BMW set to unveil DTM concept car
June 21st, 2011
BMW will present a DTM concept car next month, ahead of the German manufacturer’s return to the championship in 2012. The concept car will offer the first impression of what the M3 racing machine will look like. The news was announced on Tuesday by Jens Marquardt, who is replacing Mario Theissen as motorsport boss from July 1.
Green: Sixth a major disappointment
June 20th, 2011
Jamie Green said that his sixth place finish in the latest round of the DTM at Lausitz represented a major disappointment. Green, who was one of the pre-season title favourites, started the race from the front row, but was passed easily by winner Martin Tomczyk early on. He then fell back into a battle involving his HWA Mercedes team-mate Gary Paffett and the Abt Audi of Oliver Jarvis, and was on course for seventh before Miguel Molina retired ahead of him
Tomczyk: Lausitz win was easy
June 20th, 2011
Martin Tomczyk believes that his Lausitz DTM victory last weekend was the easiest of his career.
Tomczyk wins again at Lausitz
June 19th, 2011
Martin Tomczyk leapt to the head of the DTM standings by taking his second victory in a row at Lausitz. The German driver, who ended an 11-year winless streak for Phoenix Racing at Spielberg two weeks ago, produced a fabulous drive in his older-spec Audi to take the lead in the championship from Bruno Spengler
Scheider tops Lausitz warm-up
June 19th, 2011
Timo Scheider gave himself hope of a strong race performance by topping DTM warm-up at Lausitz. The Abt Audi driver will start Sunday’s race from back in ninth place, but was quickest during the morning session with a time of 1m20.302s set five minutes from the end. Gary Paffett was second fastest – 0.091s slower than Scheider – in his HWA Mercedes, while Oliver Jarvis (Abt) continued his strong recent form with the third best time.
Kristensen wanted more in qualifying
June 18th, 2011
Tom Kristensen believes that he was capable of qualifying higher than seventh for his DTM return at Laustiz this weekend. The eight-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner is substituting on a one-off basis for Mike Rockenfeller at the Abt Audi squad following the German’s high-speed accident at Le Mans
Q and A: Kristensen on his DTM return
June 18th, 2011
Tom Kristensen is making a one-off return to the DTM at Lausitz this weekend while regular Abt Audi driver Mike Rockenfeller rests after his horrifying Le Mans 24 Hours accident last week. The veteran Dane impressed everyone by breaking a two-year lay-off from the series to go quickest in Friday practice at the German circuit. After qualifying seventh on the grid, AUTOSPORT caught up with the eight-time Le Mans winner for a chat.
Spengler on Lausitz pole
June 18th, 2011
Bruno Spengler took his third DTM pole position from four races this year with a near perfect lap in qualifying at Lausitz. Having made it into the one-lap shoot-out for pole that is Q4, Spengler was set a tough task by Mattias Ekstrom to knock the Abt Audi driver off the top spot. But the HWA Mercedes driver made his opponent look ordinary, lapping the circuit in 1m19.119s – almost half a second quicker than the Swede – to seize the initiative.

June 18th, 2011
Martin Tomczyk continued Audi’s domination of the Lausitz DTM weekend by setting the pace in second practice at the German circuit.

Hayden to try DTM Mercedes
June 17th, 2011
Ducati Moto GP rider Nicky Hayden will try out DTM machinery for the first time at Lausitz this weekend. The 2006 world champion will perform a series of demonstration runs at the German circuit on Saturday in a Mercedes C-class as part of a tie-in between Ducati and Mercedes’ high-performance arm AMG. Mercedes driver David Coulthard will give Hayden some driving tips before the American takes to the track.
Kristensen rejoins DTM for Lausitz
June 16th, 2011
Tom Kristensen will return to the DTM this weekend at the Lausitzring to replace Mike Rockenfeller at the wheel of an Audi A4 from Team Abt Sportsline. Rockenfeller, who scored his maiden DTM win earlier this year, is still recovering from his big accident during the Le Mans 24 Hours. Audi said the 27-year-old wants to be completely sure that he has sufficient time to fully recuperate following his accident.
Paffett extends Mercedes DTM deal
June 15th, 2011
Gary Paffett has committed his DTM future to Mercedes by signing a long-term contract extension with the manufacturer. The 2005 DTM champion’ s new multi-year deal also means that he becomes the first Mercedes driver confirmed for 2012, when the series introduces its next generation of car and BMW makes its return. “I am delighted to continue my relationship with Mercedes-Benz for the long term,” said Paffett.
Tomczyk plays down title talk
June 6th, 2011
Martin Tomczyk has insisted that winning the DTM title is not his primary aim this year, despite closing to within three points of series leader Bruno Spengler thanks to his Spielberg win last weekend. The German, whose victory was not only the first for an old-spec Audi in the DTM, but also Phoenix Racing’s first since 2000, had also been on the podium last time out at Zandvoort and has been among the most impressive drivers this year
Engel: Spielberg penalty unfair
June 6th, 2011
Maro Engel believes that his drive-through penalty at the Spielberg DTM round was unfairly awarded. The German was penalised after race officials adjudged him to have caused an avoidable accident by spinning Edoardo Mortara out of third place at the first corner of the race. Engel, who had started from a season’s best sixth place in his 2008-spec Mucke Mercedes, finished 14th, but would have been at least sixth if the time lost to the penalty had not been a factor
Tomczyk takes Spielberg victory
June 5th, 2011
Martin Tomczyk took his first DTM win for nearly two years with a faultless performance at Spielberg. The German made a great getaway from pole position and stayed in front for most of the way – only dropping back while differing pit strategies came into play during the middle of the race. Significantly, it was Phoenix Racing’s first DTM victory for 11 years and its first as an Audi team.
Tomczyk tops Spielberg warm-up
June 5th, 2011
Martin Tomczyk continued his domination of the Spielberg DTM weekend by setting the fastest time in warm-up on Sunday morning. The Phoenix Audi driver, who will start the race from pole position, set the pace in 1m26.285s with a lap seven minutes from the end of the session, enough to put him ahead of Maro Engel’s Mucke Mercedes by a scant 0.007s. Championship leader Bruno Spengler was third fastest in his HWA Mercedes, the Canadian being the quickest driver in a newer 2009-spec car during the session.
Tomczyk on wet Spielberg pole
June 4th, 2011
Martin Tomczyk took his first DTM pole position for nearly two years with a brilliant display of wet-weather driving in qualifying at Spielberg. The Phoenix Audi driver was the third of four drivers to go out in Q4, and his 1m40.001s lap not only knocking Oliver Jarvis off the top spot, but also proving good enough to take pole. It is the first time since the Zandvoort event in 2009 that an old-spec car has taken pole position, Tomczyk’s time of 1m40.001s being 0.352s quicker than that of Abt driver Jarvis.
