Dovizioso shines on rally outing

MotoGP front-runner Andrea Dovizioso made a stunning World Rally Car debut in the Bettega Memorial Rallysprint in Bologna, finishing a close second after pushing 2003 WRC champion Petter Solberg all the way in the final. The Italian, who will ride for Tech 3 Yamaha in 2012, had competed at the Monza Rally Show in a Peugeot 207 S2000 at the end of November, but for Bettega was handed control of the official Ford Fiesta RS run by M-Sport in this year’s WRC. After finishing fourth in the Memorial Night Sprint, Dovizioso out-did established world rally stars including Jari-Matti Latvala and Kris Meeke by reaching the final, where he came up against Solberg.
Pirro gets Gresini MotoGP ride

Michele Pirro will graduate to MotoGP with Gresini Racing, following a successful year in Moto2 with the team. The 25-year-old Italian will race the team’s FTR-Honda run to the new CRT rules, alongside the fully-blown RC213V of fellow new signing Alvaro Bautista. “I’m happy to have made this decision and proud to join Gresini in this interesting new adventure,” said Pirro.
De Puniet buoyed by first Aspar test

Randy de Puniet said an encouraging first test with Aspar, for whom he will compete in MotoGP next year, had left him optimistic ahead of his 2012 campaign. De Puniet had tested for Suzuki this winter, but when the Japanese manufacturer withdrew its works team at the end of this season he announced a deal with Aspar, where he will compete alongside Aleix Espargaro. The team will use Aprilia-powered CRT bikes for 2012, which were rolled out for the first time in a private test at Jerez recently.

Aspar has signed Randy de Puniet and Aleix Espargaro for its 2012 MotoGP line-up, when it will run Aprilia-powered CRT bikes. Jorge ‘Aspar’ Martinez’s ultra-successful lower-category team has used customer Ducatis for the first two years of its MotoGP programme, but is switching to the new lower-technology Claiming Rule Teams class for next season. De Puniet has been in MotoGP since 2006, initially with the factory Kawasaki team, then LCR Honda, before a single season with Pramac Ducati this year.
Elias steps back to Moto2 with Aspar

Inaugural Moto2 champion Toni Elias is to return to the category with Aspar in 2012 after his unsuccessful second stint in MotoGP. It is the second time that Elias has dropped back to the world championship’s secondary class. He contested the first ever Moto2 season with Gresini in 2010 after ending up without a MotoGP ride for the season, and went on to win the title and earn a MotoGP comeback with LCR Honda
Suzuki withdraws from MotoGP

Hayden undergoes wrist surgery

Ducati rider Nicky Hayden underwent surgery on Monday to speed up the healing process on the right wrist he injured during the MotoGP finale at Valencia. The American rider was injured after being involved in a multiple-bike crash at the start of the race

West gets Speed Master MotoGP ride

Anthony West is set to return to the MotoGP field in 2012 with the Speed Master team’s CRT bike. The 30-year-old Australian announced the deal via his social media accounts today. A long-time 250cc rider, West’s victories in World Supersport racing earned him a call-up by the Kawasaki MotoGP team in mid-2007, as he replaced Olivier Jacque.
Ellison set to return to MotoGP

James Ellison is set to make his MotoGP return after a five-year absence in 2012 after signing for Paul Bird’s new claiming rules team. It has not been decided what chassis the 31-year-old Briton will race, but it will be powered by an Aprilia RSV-4 engine.
LCR praises Bradl after test

Valentino Rossi says Ducati still needs to do a lot of work over the winter to get its 1000cc bike fully on the pace, but is cautiously optimistic about the new machine. The team tried a revised version of the GP12 with a part aluminium frame over the past two days at Valencia. Pedrosa quickest again as test ends

Dani Pedrosa and world champion Casey Stoner were first and second as Honda wrapped up its dominant MotoGP season with another commanding performance on the final Valencia test day. Riding the new 1000cc bike, Pedrosa set a best time of 1m31.807s in the morning to edge team-mate Stoner by 0.161 seconds.

Randy de Puniet wants to race for Suzuki in MotoGP next year after making his test debut with the manufacturer at Valencia on Tuesday. The Frenchman was a last-minute call-up to the Japanese manufacturer’s test line-up, as team manager Paul Denning wanted a fresh pair of eyes to assess improvements to the GSV-R over the course of the season, and John Hopkins, who had been scheduled to test, is currently sidelined through injury. But he surprised the team by going fourth quickest overall and fastest of the 800cc bikes on-track against the 1000cc Hondas, Yamahas and Ducatis
