Gresini had agonised over whether to race at Valencia at all in the wake of Simoncelli’s death. Its riders Pirro and Yuki Takahashi then timed their qualifying runs perfectly to take a poignant first and second on the Moto2 grid before rain fell yesterday
Terol takes title, Vinales wins race
November 6th, 2011
Nico Terol became the last ever 125cc world champion in the category’s farewell race at Valencia, which was won by Maverick Vinales. Terol came into the race – the last before 125cc is replaced by the new Moto3 championship – with a 20-point lead over rival Johann Zarco, so only needed an 11th place finish to clinch the crown. Having only qualified ninth in Saturday’s changeable conditions, Aspar Aprilia rider Terol made a great start and briefly found himself dicing with Zarco’s Ajo Derbi, which qualified third.
Hayes tops Valencia warm-up
November 6th, 2011
MotoGP debutant Josh Hayes was quickest in the warm-up for the Valencia Grand Prix thanks to a bold late run on slick tyres in a damp session. The double American Superbike champion was the first man to do a flying lap on slicks, and that allowed him to set a 1m40.469s to lead the way by 1.6 seconds over Gresini Honda’s Hiroshi Aoyama and 3.3s over world champion Casey Stoner’s Honda. Hayes is riding for Tech 3 Yamaha this weekend in place of Colin Edwards, who sustained arm injuries in the Sepang crash that killed Marco Simoncelli

November 5th, 2011
Randy de Puniet is aiming to stay in the top five in the Valencia Grand Prix after claiming a season-best fourth on the grid with his Pramac Ducati – but is not ruling out a shock podium finish. The Frenchman has been a front-runner in all conditions this weekend, and sees no reason why that should not continue in the race.
Pedrosa hopes Stoner not unbeatable
November 5th, 2011
Dani Pedrosa says he has not given up on beating Honda team-mate Casey Stoner to victory in the Valencia Grand Prix, but admits he needs to make significant set-up improvements if he is to challenge the world champion. Stoner claimed pole position today by just over a second over Pedrosa, who starts second.
Stoner plays down pole record
November 5th, 2011
Casey Stoner says he does not think his record-equalling tally of 12 pole positions in a premier class season this year should be compared to Mick Doohan’s benchmark 12-pole tally from the 1997 500cc world championship. Champion rider Stoner claimed his 12th pole of the year at Valencia today to draw level with Doohan’s mark, in a year when no one else has taken more than two poles. But Stoner, who has also won nine races this season, insisted that as the 2011 MotoGP calendar featured 18 rounds and Doohan scored his 12 poles within 15 races, comparisons were inappropriate

Pirro on pole as Bradl confirms title
November 5th, 2011
Gresini Racing earned a poignant one-two on the Valencia Moto2 grid with Michele Pirro and Yuki Takahashi, as Stefan Bradl wrapped up the 2011 championship through Marc Marquez’s absence. Although Bradl’s title rival Marquez had announced on Friday that he would not be fit to race at Valencia following his Sepang qualifying crash, his team left the door open to a late recovery, leaving Bradl uncertain whether he really could celebrate the championship or not. But with Marquez sitting out qualifying and confirming that his optic nerve injury would not allow him to ride at all this weekend, Bradl can go into tomorrow’s season finale knowing his points tally cannot be beaten and the title is sealed

Ducati pair praying for more rain
November 4th, 2011
Ducati’s Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden are pinning their Valencia Grand Prix hopes on today’s rain continuing after being frontrunners in both Friday practice sessions. The troubled 2011 Ducati proved quick in the wet, allowing both men to appear on top of the timing screens for periods – ending up third and fourth in the morning, with Hayden second in the afternoon. “This was actually the first time I’ve ever ridden the GP11.1 in the wet, and I was really happy with how it felt,” said Hayden
