Suzuki: Fastest time underlines gains
November 4th, 2011
Suzuki said Alvaro Bautista’s timesheet-topping performance at Valencia showed that the team was making genuine progress, even though it was a wet session. Bautista led the way in the rain this afternoon, and despite the rain having shaken up the order, team boss Paul Denning pointed out that for much of the year wet and cold conditions had actually been Suzuki’s weak spot. “Cold and low grip conditions were always the situation that caused us the most problems and as we saw at Phillip Island a few weeks back – and again today – the steps that Suzuki has taken with the GSV-R have again proven to be very effective,” said Denning.

Stoner fastest at damp Valencia
November 4th, 2011
World champion Casey Stoner and Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa prevented any giant-killing in a damp opening free practice session at Valencia. After a topsy-turvy session full of position swapping, Stoner resumed the usual order by putting in a 1m45.513s lap with five minutes to go, with Pedrosa joining him at the front a few minutes later, the Spaniard lapping 0.2 seconds slower. Until the late Honda surge, a variety of unusual names took advantage of the slippery conditions and appeared at or near the top of the times.

Simoncelli crash a ‘freak accident’
November 4th, 2011
MotoGP world champions Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi do not think anything could have been done to prevent Marco Simoncelli’s fatal accident in the Malaysian Grand Prix. Simoncelli died from injuries suffered when he veered into the path of Rossi and Colin Edwards during a crash on lap two at Sepang. Amid suggestions that a quirk of the Bridgestone tyres’ characteristics caught Simoncelli out and caused his bike’s unusual trajectory in the crash, Stoner insisted that the incident was just an unfortunate one-off and not tyre-related.
