Dani Pedrosa took only his second pole of the 2011 MotoGP season in Malaysian Grand Prix qualifying, after a huge fight with his Honda team-mates Casey Stoner and Andrea Dovizioso. Despite dominating practice, Pedrosa had to dig deep in qualifying – and gave himself an early headache when he fell at the final corner just 12 minutes into the session
Terol takes pole as Zarco struggles

Nico Terol took a big step closer to the 125cc title by taking his seventh pole of the year at Sepang, as his championship rival Johann Zarco ended up a disastrous 15th on the grid. Zarco has to out-score Terol in Malaysia to keep the title fight alive until the Valencia finale, but he crashed at Turn 11 during qualifying

Hopkins forced to pull out of Sepang

John Hopkins has had to abandon his MotoGP return at Sepang due to complications with the hand injury he sustained at Brno. The American broke the third finger on his right hand in an accident on the last of his occasional MotoGP outings for Suzuki at Brno in August. He recovered for the final part of the British Superbike season, and returned to MotoGP in Malaysia this weekend, going 14th fastest in practice yesterday.

Dani Pedrosa feels he can still find some more speed from his Honda despite dominating Friday practice at Sepang. The Spaniard was quickest by commanding margins in both sessions today, and lapped beneath the 2010 pole time – but said he was not entirely happy with his bike yet.

Leading MotoGP riders say rising star Marc Marquez is right to stay in Moto2 for 2012 even if he wins the title at the first attempt. There had been speculation that Marquez could be in for a fast-track graduation to MotoGP on a Honda next season after just one year in Moto2, but the 18-year-old Spaniard announced yesterday that he would remain in the intermediate class for one more year. World champion Casey Stoner, who took an unusual route to MotoGP with two 250cc seasons sandwiching two years of 125cc, said Marquez should do what he felt most comfortable with
Forward to run Suter-BMW in MotoGP

Colin Edwards says his new Forward Racing team will run a BMW-powered Suter chassis in MotoGP next season. Edwards is leaving Tech 3 Yamaha after four seasons to join Moto2 graduate Forward, which is entering the top class under the new Claiming Rule Teams (CRT) system. There had been speculation that Edwards would secure Tech 3 chassis and Yamaha engines for the project, but he joked that he had encountered too much resistance

Yamaha reckons its substitute rider Katsuyuki Nakasuga put himself under too much pressure in Friday practice at Sepang, after he crashed in both sessions. Test rider and All Japan Road Racing competitor Nakasuga fell at the final corner in the morning and Turn 13 in the afternoon.

Malaysian Grand Prix organisers have been fined over an incident in Moto2 practice today that sidelined championship contender Marc Marquez and left Bradley Smith with a fractured collarbone and chest contusion. Spanish rider Marc Marquez will stay in Moto2 next season, ruling out an early move to MotoGP despite his impressive campaign. The 18-year-old has won seven races in his debut season in Moto2 and is just three points behind Stefan Bradl in the standings after his charge from 38th to third in last weekend’s Australian Grand Prix. Marquez’s superb season has led to speculation about a possible move to MotoGP next year, but the Spaniard on Thursday confirmed he will compete in Moto2 again in 2012.

Simoncelli delighted with best result

Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli was ‘delighted’ to have recorded his best ever finish in a MotoGP event after battling to second place in the Australian Grand Prix behind new world champion Casey Stoner. The Italian ran in second place for much of the race, but dropped behind Andrea Dovizioso when the track dampened along with a sudden rain shower. Simoncelli remained composed however and re-passed the factory Repsol Honda rider on the last lap as the track dried out again.
Dovizioso: Beating Pedrosa vital

Andrea Dovizioso said that beating Dani Pedrosa to the final podium spot at the Australian Grand Prix was a massive lift in his intra-team battle with the Spaniard for third place in the world championship. Dovizioso, who is leaving Honda for the Tech 3 Yamaha squad at the end of the season, saw Pedrosa cut the gap between the two in the standings from 53 points to one in the space of just four races. And Pedrosa looked set to overhaul the Italian for third spot in the points as the pair battled for the final podium position at Phillip Island.
