19 years old, Jameson Spies lives in Quartz Hill, California. He grew-up surrounded by racing. • Jason Lofing
    iRacing.com Series Writer
Jason is 21 years old and was born and raised in Elk Grove. California. A big time NASCAR fan, he hasn’t missed a race on Sunday in years. Lofing is also a huge San Fransisco Giants fan and tries to take in at least a couple games a year. Other than sim racing, his biggest (and far more expensive!) hobby is photography. Although he is rather new to sim racing, Lofing has already accomplished some pretty impressive results, qualifying for the 2011 iRacing Oval Pro Series in Season 1, 2011, winning the inaugural Landon Cassill Qualifying Challenge and finishing runner-up in the second one.
  • Ray Bryden
    Technical contributor
Ray grew up in Nova Scotia, which means he’s a hockey nut, but in Nova Scotia’s two non-winter months he had to find other diversions, which meant watching F1 racing on weekends with his dad and brothers. Without the resources to get started in racing, he gravitated to computer versions of racing – first Atari games like Pole Position, followed by PC racing games like Indianapolis 500: The Simulation. Dozens of others came and went, until Grand Prix Legends came along and he decided sim-racing was his official hobby. Years were spent enjoying this both offline and online until a few years of fatherhood took priority. When free-time reappeared he heard about iRacing and signed up in 2008 and became so involved in the service that he wrote one of the first books on the subject of sim-racing, iRacing Paddock. When not writing for inRacingNews.com, his main occupation is as a research associate with Saint-Gobain working on advanced ceramic materials.

Patrick Atherton, originally from Adelaide in the state of South Australia, currently resides just outside of Melbourne, Victoria with wife of 17 years and 3 kids. A business manager by profession, but also dabbles with blogging, cartooning and fine art, having been published both as a writer in a short-lived South Australian motorsport yearbook and later as a cartoonist in a niche trade magazine. At the age of 19 he competed in club circuit events in an Austin Healey Sprite, later indulging in sprint karts between 1994 and 2000. Following the move to the State of Victoria he raced Road Race Karts (“Superkarts” as they are known in Australia) in the popular Rotax class, competing at Phillip Island, Oran Park, Mallala, Wakefield Park, Eastern Creek, Calder Park, Sandown and Winton. It was during this time he met former Australian F2 champion and inventor of Australia’s first, and most prolific race simulator rig, Jon Crooke. This culminated in an introduction to Papyrus’ legendary NR2003 simulation, and the subsequent sim racing addiction which brought him to iRacing.

Tim Terry, aka the voice of Maritime stock car racing, fell in love with sim racing in 2004 after he joined the Sim Racing Network crew as a pit reporter. From October 2004 to SRNtv’s closure in June 2007, he’s covered prestigious races and leagues such as the Online 500, FLM Fall 400, Real Racing Online and the DMP Racing League – each as the lead broadcaster for the company. At the same time the wheels started to turn in another direction as he began announcing stock car racing locally. Terry became the assistant announcer at Scotia Speedworld in May 2007 and took over full duties in May 2009 when long-time voice Mike Kaplan retired from the track. Terry also became the series voice of the Parts For Trucks Pro Stock Tour in ’09 and continues to hold down both posts in 2011. Dale Earnhardt Jr remains tight-lipped about the chances of Danica Patrick making a full switch to NASCAR with his Nationwide Series team, amid suggestions that an announcement will be made as early as next week. Following reports that Patrick has already committed to run full-time in NASCAR’s second-tier series with JR Motorsports from 2012, with the potential for Sprint Cup outings as well, Earnhardt insisted his team was not planning any announcements yet – but admitted he would be happy to continue the relationship with Patrick

Three of the 2000+ iRacers to tackle MIS in Week 2 cross the stripe.

Illinois sim racer Brandon Buchberger flexed his muscle during Week Two as he took the overall win in the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series (NiCCS) at Michigan International Speedway. Over 2000 sim racers took to the track, but it was a win on August 14th that put Buchberger over the top for the victory. Buchberger bagged the win to take home 236 points. With an sof rating pegged at a 3770, the winner led just seven laps in the highly competitive race which featured a total of 21 lead changes over the 80 lap duration. The race was slowed by six yellow flags and saw Justin Fuller come home in second, ahead of Kwame Adjei, Carl Taylor and Ryan Ameen. Justin Brooks led the race with five laps to go [...]

One Giant Leap

One Giant Leap

For the first time this season, the NASCAR iRacing Class A Series turned both left and right, in their trip to Watkins Glen. History tells us the road courses are usually a slow week for the primarily oval division, however, history led us astray this time as the big names were out and the points totals were high for Week 2 of 2011 Season 3. Street Stock champion Nick Ottinger made the (giant) leap up to the top oval car, and handled it masterfully as he won both his starts, and took top honors for the week. Ottinger’s 284 points are unprecedented for a road coarse event for the Impala series, but he was not the only sim racer who came out of New York with a smile. Fellow NASCAR [...]

Royce Rumbles at Richmond

Untamed Motorsports continued their trip to the top of the NASCAR iRacing.com Tour Modified Series in Week Two with Royce Valley topping the field of ground-pounders as the victor at the Richmond International Raceway. The first race on August 9th proved to be the big race for the week as four of the top five spots in the weekly standings were occupied by sim racers who scored top finishes in the 100-lap affair. Valley’s win in the 3594 sof race gained the Modified veteran 225 points at the Richmond oval. Valley led the final 13 laps of the race, defeating Taylor Meyn, who led the most laps of the event, pacing the field for 69 laps. Brandon Salvatore came home in third after leading 18 laps from the pole while [...]

Parker spins in front of Davies as Gorlinsky squeezes past.

Brad Davies passed JR Motorsports teammate John Gorlinsky for the lead with nine laps to go to win the NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship (NiSWC) race at Chicagoland Speedway. The 2010 NiSWC runner-up survived a run-in with Josh Parker on pit entry in the closing stages of the race to claim a series-best third win of 2011 while also improving his position in the championship standings. Coming into Chicagoland, all the sim racers knew a good qualifying position would be critical to their chances of success as passing has proven to be extremely challenging once the new tires recently introduced by iRacing have a few laps on them.  Parker put himself in the best position possible by taking pole position with a blistering lap that was half a tenth faster [...]

NASCAR postpones Watkins Glen

August 14th, 2011

Rain has forced Sunday’s Sprint Cup series race at Watkins Glen to be postponed until Monday morning. Despite a poor weather forecast showing imminent rain in the afternoon, NASCAR officials did everything in their power to get the race underway, first waiting for noon showers to cease, then attempting to dry the track as soon as the rain stopped. Nearly three and a half hours after the scheduled starting time the rain returned however, hampering the officials’ efforts and forcing them to postpone the race until Monday.

Gordon wants road course in the Chase

Jeff Gordon believes the NASCAR Sprint Cup’s 10-race Chase for the Championship would benefit from having a road course race in the future. The four-time Cup champion, who has won more road course races at NASCAR’s top level than anyone else, says that the only significant thing missing from the Chase is a non-oval race, and that the implementation of double-file restarts would add an extra dimension to the mix for drivers and fans

Lewandowski batted .500 at Pocono, winning five of 10 starts including ? high SoF event.

The twelve week countdown to the NASCAR iRacing Pro Series started last week at Pocono Raceway, with iRacers from all over the world tackling the “Tricky Triangle.” Getting the 3,450 pound, 750+ Chevrolet Impala around the tri-cornered, bumpy, odd ball of a track is no easy task. With that being said, many Class A drivers attacked the track, and came out of Long Pond, Pennsylvania with a lot of confidence, and the points to go with it. TJ Majors led the way among the Pro hopefuls with a staggering 298 points, topping all Class A sim racers and only trailing current NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship driver Brad Davies by five markers. Majors, who many people know as Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s spotter in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, only ran [...]

Keselowski skips Nationwide race

Brad Keselowski will skip Saturday’s Nationwide Series race at Watkins Glen as he continues to recover from his testing accident from last week. The Penske driver was set to be on double-duty next weekend, but following his second Sprint Cup win of the season, which places him as the favorite to land one of the wildcard entries into this year’s Chase, he is set to place his focus on his Cup programme in order to remain eligible for the playoff. Keselowski basically needs to be among the top 20 in points in five-week’s time in order to become a championship contender for the first time, and this weekend’s race at Watkins Glen is set to place his injured ankle under massive stress, being regarded as the toughest venue for brakes.
