Iowa’s Battle Royal
by Jameson Spies on January 12th, 2012
The NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series brought excitement with them as online racing competitors made the trip to Iowa for Week Ten of their twelve week season. As if Iowa Speedway’s unique 7/8 mile oval did not provide enough setup nightmares for crew chiefs, the Chevrolet Impalas roared to life under the night sky for only the third time this season. History tells us when the lights come on, the action heats up — and this week lived up to those expectations. It was an eventful week for NiCLAS Division One points leader Kile Gottula, as he slots in second overall in the standings behind this week’s leader Reilly L Doyle. Doyle and Gottula became very familiar with each other throughout the week, as both made two starts – in [...]
Paquette Extends Lead
by Allen Krier on January 12th, 2012
Week Ten of the iRacing.com Street Stock Series saw sim racers travel down south to Braselton, Ga, home to both Road Atlanta and Lanier National Speedway. In this case, drivers were looking to tame Lanier National’s 3/8th mile oval with the season winding-down. In all, 971 drivers attempted a race during the week with 424 of them making at least one qualifying attempt. Weekly High Strength of Field Last week’s high Strength of Field (SoF) race had an SoF of 3216 which paid 195 points to win. Jordan Werth (Florida) come out on top after starting on the pole and leading every lap. NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship driver Patrick Fogel finish in second, only a tenth of a second behind worth. For his second place finish, Fogel (Pennsylvania) received [...]
Setting the Stage
by Jason Lofing on January 11th, 2012
Michigan International Speedway played host to the penultimate race of the 2011 NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series season and, with the series championship and automatic berths in the 2012 NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship still up for grabs, last night’s online race figured to set the stage for next week’s dramatic season finale. While all eyes were on series co-points leaders Matt Whitten and Marcus Lindsey who started third and eleventh, respectively, it was Robert Hall who stole the NiPS thunder with a convincing win. Pole-winner Michael Conti took the green flag and, together with Jeremy Thornton, quickly built a sizable gap on the field. The two ran nose-to-tail for the initial fuel run, with Conti leading all but one of the first 37 laps before finally giving way to Thornton, [...]
NASCAR prepares to test new rules
January 10th, 2012
NASCAR Sprint Cup teams and drivers will get their first chance to try the new-for-2012 restrictor plate package in a full field of cars at Daytona this week. Pre-season testing ahead of the season-opening Daytona 500 gets underway at the 2.5-mile oval on Wednesday.
Cormier Corners Concord Win; Salvatore Mighty at Milwaukee
by Tim Terry on January 9th, 2012
The Week Eight story in the NASCAR iRacing.com Tour Modified Series (NiTMS) turned into the strength of performances by two sim racers looking to move up the ladder in the Modified ranks. While Derrick Cormier2 scored the overall win of the week, it was Brett Osborn who took the top split race of the week. The story behind the two though was that they both made a half dozen starts or more each on the tricky Concord Speedway triangle configuration! Osborn’s big win out of his eight starts during Round Eight came on Thursday’s 2774 Strength of Field (SoF) race. Osborn led just over a quarter of the 100-laps in the online race, which featured four cautions and saw two lead changes. Modified veteran Paul Wisniewski was second, followed by [...]
Stenhouse gets Roush Daytona seat
January 7th, 2012
NASCAR Nationwide Series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr will return to the Sprint Cup for the Daytona 500 in Roush Fenway’s #6 Ford. Stenhouse became the first man to win the Nationwide title under the new system in which drivers could only compete for one NASCAR series crown per year, ending the era of the second-tier championship invariably going to a Cup regular contesting a parallel schedule.
Smith Tops Talladega; Daley Real Deal at Marty
by Tim Terry on January 6th, 2012
Thomas D Smith danced with the draft all the way to the top of the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series at Talladega Superspeedway during Week Eight competition at the popular track. Over 2,200 sim racers tried their hand at the unique breed of online oval racing and when the dust settled and the points were tallied, it was the 2011 Season Three runner-up who stood tall over all who dared to tackle the 2.66-mile tri-oval. Smith’s win came in a 4565 Strength of Field (SoF) race on Tuesday in which he led 17 of 50 lap en route to the win. Pole sitter Adrian Duncan was second in the event, followed by Dylan Duval, Rodney Harris and David Rattler. NASCAR iRacing Pro Series driver Matt Whitten led the most laps [...]
Bayne stays on at Wood Brothers
January 6th, 2012
Last year’s shock Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne will continue to race for the Wood Brothers team in the NASCAR Sprint Cup in 2012, the team has announced. Bayne shot to stardom at the start of 2011 when he won the biggest race of the season as a rookie.
PJ Tames the Monster
by Jameson Spies on January 5th, 2012
The NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series looked into the eye of the monster for Week Nine of their twelve week season. Dover International Speedway was the venue as drivers took on the “Monster Mile” and, as to be expected, NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series (NiPS) drivers flocked to the top of the charts. Dover’s concrete surface is a rarity on the iRacing.com service, and this would challenge setup builders in entirely new ways. As if the concrete surface wasn’t enough of a curve ball to throw at competitors, Dover also offers high banks, lightning quick speeds and turns that narrow-up in a hurry. Current NiPS driver PJ Stergios enjoyed success in his only start at the Monster Mile, earning a win from his second place starting position, and 248 points to [...]
Warren Wins Vegas on Last Lap Pass
by Jason Lofing on January 4th, 2012
The NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series visited Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the tenth week of twelve in the season. With time running out to secure a spot in the 2012 NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship, Vegas was expected to be a hotly contested online race, and it lived-up to expectations as Alex Warren beat Patrick Baldwin in a thrilling late race battle that featured some of the best racing of the whole 2011 NiPS season. Mitchell Hunt started on pole and jumped out to about a half-second lead shortly after the green flag flew. However, it quickly became obvious that the whole field of sim racers was very evenly matched; so evenly matched in fact that drivers who normally run very strong, such as Nick Ottinger, were mired back in [...]

January 4th, 2012
Richard Petty Motorsports has announced that Aric Almirola will drive the #43 Ford Fusion in the Sprint Cup Series during the 2012 season. The deal means Almirola will return to the Sprint Cup this year, having not raced in it since the 2010 season

Wilsey Tops Thompson; Moriarity Rolls at Richmond
by Tim Terry on January 3rd, 2012
Division Two point leader Mark Wilsey entered Week Eight of the iRacing.com Late Model Tour in the top five overall. When he left Thompson International Speedway (TIS) after seven days of online racing, he had himself an overall weekly win, second place in overall points to his credit and the satisfaction of knowing he had established the fact that he can contend for the top prize in short track racing on the iRacing service. Wilsey’s big win came on Christmas Eve during a 2812 Strength of Field (SoF) race. Wilsey led all 50 laps from the pole position on the Connecticut high banks and came home nearly three seconds up on second place driver Sandro Vitelli. Late Model and sim racing veteran Jeff Conover was third, followed by Matt Bussa [...]
Hendrick: Supply role not in doubt
January 3rd, 2012
NASCAR team boss Rick Hendrick says he has no doubts about providing rival Sprint Cup teams with cars and engines despite the fact that Tony Stewart used Hendrick equipment to win the championship for Stewart-Haas this year. Stewart’s team is one of several to buy in chassis and engines from one of the bigger teams, and he went on to win the title while Hendrick’s top driver was Jimmie Johnson in sixth. However, Hendrick says he has no problem with other teams beating his with the same equipment, and he called on his own team to raise its game to match Stewart-Haas in the future.
Tricky Magic
by Jameson Spies on December 30th, 2011
Tricky New Hampshire Motor Speedway was the venue for Week Eight of the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series (NiCAS). Nearly 250 sim racers were brave enough to take on this oddball of a track in the top oval stock car in the world of online racing. While some were able to overcome to challenges of the Magic Mile, others were left scratching their heads. Flat track ace, and current NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship (NiSWC) driver Josh Berry captured top honors on the week. A constant threat whenever he races, Berry positively thrives at flat tracks . . . as this week demonstrated. Berry heads a rather unusual top five with Brendan Doyle coming home second, followed by the surprise of the week, Brodie Kostecki in third. Kostecki is an [...]
Adams Makes his Mark
by Jason Lofing on December 28th, 2011
With the NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series (NiPS) starting to wind down for 2011, sim racers took to Pocono Raceway for the ninth race of the season. The Tricky Triangle is a very demanding track, with three very different corners, requiring drivers to compensate on their setup to ensure their car drives well in all three turns. Throw-in a dash or two of the unexpected — such as the number and timing of caution periods and the resulting havoc they play on pit stop strategy — and you had the makings of a thoroughly unpredictable online race. Jon Adams got it right on all counts, emerging as the fastest man on the track in the second half of the race and then playing the fuel strategy perfectly to power home [...]
Stewart: Title fight among best ever
December 28th, 2011
Tony Stewart believes his battle for the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup with Carl Edwards was one of the best in the history of the sport. The top two in the title race finished the year equal on points, after a head-to-head fight for race victory in the season finale at Homestead
Kurt Busch joins Phoenix Racing
December 23rd, 2011
Kurt Busch, the 2004 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, has agreed a one-year deal to drive the No. 51 for Phoenix Racing in next year’s championship. The announcement comes just weeks after Busch reached a mutual agreement to split with Penske Racing after a tumultuous end to 2011, which culminated in an expletive-laden tirade against a member of the media.
Allmendinger replaces Busch at Penske
December 21st, 2011
AJ Allmendinger will replace Kurt Busch at the wheel of the #22 car at Penske Racing after the latter parted company with the team earlier this month. Busch’s position was in doubt since he was caught on camera making an obscene gesture in his car at the season finale at Homestead.
