Rain set to delay Daytona start

Rain is expected to hamper the scheduled start for today’s 54th running of the Daytona 500. The rainfall started before noon local time and although there has not been a heavy downpour, the track is completely wet approaching the scheduled green flag time of 1:29pm US Eastern Time

Ford believes its cars go into the NASCAR Sprint Cup season-opening Daytona 500 with a crucial advantage as the FR9 engine’s cooling system appears to be coping better with this year’s rules package than rival motors. Technical rule changes, designed to limit the tandem-racing that prevailed at restrictor-plate tracks last year, have made engine cooling more critical than ever in NASCAR’s biggest race.

Reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart claimed victory in the opening Gatorade Duel race to set the field for Sunday’s Daytona 500. The Stewart-Haas driver edged out Hendrick’s Dale Earnhardt Jr for the win as the race ended under caution following a big crash for Danica Patrick on the last lap. Patrick was unhurt.

For Week Three the NASCAR iRacing.com Class B Series (NiCBS) traveled to the famous track known as “The Lady in Black.” The famed South Carolina track has a rich history and sim racers looked to add their own history as they pursue an iRacing championship. 241 racers would attempt at least one race during the week while 63 drivers turned at least one qualifying lap at Darlington . . . the track too tough to tame. The third season of the NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship (NiSWC) kicked-off Tuesday night at Daytona International Speedway, with 50 sim racers ready to compete in the 17 race season and win part of the $19,000 championship purse. The 2012 NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship kicks-off tonight with iRacing’s broadcast of the world’s top stock car sim racers going head-to-head at Daytona International Speedway. iRacing and PSRTV have been working hard during the off-season to insure the NiSWC broadcasts are the best ever. NASCAR to examine team deals

NASCAR could review its regulations regarding teams taking on other squads’ points to ensure their drivers can qualify for Sprint Cup events. Under NASCAR rules, the top 35 in the owners’ standings from the previous year are guaranteed qualifying spots in the opening five Cup rounds. This has led to various deals being struck and partnerships created between teams to get drivers into the field, including this year an alliance between Stewart-Haas Racing and Tommy Baldwin Racing that saw the former’s rookie driver Danica Patrick transferred to a Baldwin entry to ensure qualification for the early races

Last year’s Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne said securing a spot in the 2012 field without having to rely on a Duel result was a huge relief – and now hopes he can find more sponsorship to prolong his 2012 season. The Wood Brothers driver did not have a guaranteed Daytona start as his car was not within the top 35 in last year’s Sprint Cup owners’ points standings.

Daytona 500 pole-winner Carl Edwards is not ruling out pushing for victory in Thursday’s Gatorade Duel qualifying race, even though his pole position is secure. Edwards guaranteed his top spot for the NASCAR Sprint Cup season-opener in yesterday’s qualifying session, and will retain it wherever he finishes in his Duel heat. But despite the return of fully-fledged pack racing seeing more crashes in Saturday’s Budweiser Shootout event, the Roush Fenway driver said he is open to taking risks in the Duel even though there is nothing at stake for him.

Next year’s NASCAR Shootout will return to the traditional format of featuring pole-winners from the previous season. NASCAR’s non-championship curtain-raiser, held at Daytona the weekend prior to the track’s 500-mile Sprint Cup season-opener, has used a variety of different eligibility formats in recent years.

Kyle Busch escaped several incidents to beat Tony Stewart to victory in a wild Budweiser Shootout as the NASCAR season got underway at Daytona. The non-championship race saw three large multi-car accidents, the first as early as lap nine, and the last prompting a green-white-chequered finish after Jeff Gordon’s Hendrick Chevrolet was sent rolling following contact first with Busch, then with his team-mate Jimmie Johnson
