2011 Formula 2 runner-up Christopher Zanella brought a successful season to a close by topping the second – and final – day of testing at Barcelona. The 22-year-old, a double race winner in this year’s championship, set his best time of 1m37.075s in the cooler morning conditions, and it remained unbeaten for the remainder of the day. Newcomer and German F3 graduate Markus Pommer came within 14 thousandths of deposing Zanella in the afternoon, but ultimately had to settle for second.
Monras quickest in Barcelona testing

Miki Monras topped the opening day of Formula 2 winter testing at Barcelona on Tuesday. The 19-year-old Spaniard, who was fourth in this year’s championship, set the morning pace in 1m35.950s, which remained the benchmark for the rest of the day and was 0.142s quicker than another series regular, Mihai Marinescu. “I really enjoyed the test day,” said Monras.
McKenzie joins F2 test list

Malvern added to F2 test line-up

Scott Malvern is the latest driver to confirm his participation in next week’s Formula 2 test at Barcelona. Malvern, 22, has been awarded a place at the test as part of his prize for winning the British Formula Ford Championship this year, and is keen on a move into the series in 2012.
GP circuits for Formula 2 in 2012

Formula 2 will visit five current grand prix venues in its fourth season of competition, after an eight-event calendar was approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council. The 2012 schedule will also feature two new races, with the series set for maiden visits to Paul Ricard in July and the Hungaroring in September. It will open, as was the case this year, with Silverstone in April, before moving on to the Algarve – where F2 raced in 2010 – the Nurburgring, Spa-Francorchamps and Brands Hatch.

Mirko Bortolotti secured his eighth pole position of the season with an inspired strategy in first qualifying at Barcelona. The Italian opted to sit out the opening minutes of qualifying, instead choosing to emerge on fresh rubber as the rest of the field headed to the pits for a tyre change. Bortolotti made full use of the resulting clean air, dropping down to a 1m37.874s which was unbeaten for the remainder of the session.

Silverstone race-winner Miki Monras set the pace in first practice for the Formula 2 finale at Catalunya this weekend. The 19-year-old Spaniard made the most of the wet conditions to top the session by half a second with a of 2m02.568s, ahead of new champion Mirko Bortolotti and Jack Clarke. Early session pacesetter Mikkel Mac was fourth fastest ahead of Kelvin Snoeks, Tobias Hegewald and Benjamin Lariche
F2 announces two Spanish tests

The Formula 2 championship has announced that two winter tests will be held before the end of the year in Spain. The series will visit Jerez on November 28-29 and then Barcelona on December 13-14 in an attempt to allow prospective drivers for the 2012 season to try out the Williams-built cars.

Mihai Marinescu claimed his first ever F2 win at Monza, while Mirko Bortolotti all but wrapped up the 2011 title by finishing runner-up. Starting from pole, the Romanian lost the lead to Alex Brundle on the run down to the first corner but retook it one lap later heading into Turn 1 and from then on was never seriously challenged. “I’ve done a lot of things differently since Austria, starting with the preparation for the weekend itself and then a different approach to the whole weekend,” Marinescu said.

Mihai Marinescu edged out Alex Brundle to secure his first pole position of the season at Monza. Having finished second fastest in both practice sessions, the Romanian built upon his strong opening to set a 1m40.071s, which was enough to earn him his best qualifying result of the year. “I’m very happy about it and very pleased that it’s happened right here at Monza which is a very special place for me,” Marinescu said.
