Last season’s Formula 2 runner-up Christopher Zanella has announced that he will return to a series for another shot at the title in 2012. In his first year in F2 after moving up from Formula 3, Zanella took two victories as he finished as champion Mirko Bortolotti’s nearest rival.
Stoneman to join F2 Silverstone test

2010 Formula 2 champion Dean Stoneman will continue his recovery from testicular cancer by returning to the series for the first of its two pre-season tests at Silverstone on Wednesday 28 March. The Briton won the 2010 crown following a season-long battle with Jolyon Palmer, his six wins and 13 podiums enough to earn him the prize Williams F1 test drive.

McKenzie switches into F2

Daniel McKenzie says he will be targeting title glory after moving into Formula 2 for the 2012 season. The 23-year-old competed with Comtec in Formula Renault 3.5 last season, although he failed to trouble the points – his best finish being a 12th in the final race at Catalunya. The Briton previously competed in British F3, where he scored two victories for Fortec in 2010 and claimed the National championship the previous season.

Hector Hurst steps up to F2 for 2012

British driver Hector Hurst will graduate from Formula Renault BARC to Formula 2 for the 2012 season. The 19-year-old scored two fifth-place finishes en route to 13th in last season’s BARC Renault championship. He has previously been a finalist on the Formula BMW European Scholarship programme, although he elected to sit out 2010 in order to focus on his education.
Zhu moves into F2 for 2012

David Zhu will become the first Chinese driver to compete in the new era of Formula 2 after confirming his participation in the 2012 championship. The 21-year-old has competed in various Asian-based championships over the past five years, and has scored podiums in Formula BMW Asia in 2007 and the Formula Pilota China series last year
F2 announces rookie prize

Sureshwaren to stay in F2

Parthiva Sureshwaren will remain in Formula 2 for a third season this year. The 31-year-old Indian, who previously raced in A1GP and British F3, made his F2 debut in 2010 and scored his best result that year with a 10th place at Monza. After a pointless campaign last year, Sureshwaren is confident that with more experience under his belt, he can consistently finish higher this time around.

Zanella ends Barcelona testing on top

2011 Formula 2 runner-up Christopher Zanella brought a successful season to a close by topping the second – and final – day of testing at Barcelona. The 22-year-old, a double race winner in this year’s championship, set his best time of 1m37.075s in the cooler morning conditions, and it remained unbeaten for the remainder of the day. Newcomer and German F3 graduate Markus Pommer came within 14 thousandths of deposing Zanella in the afternoon, but ultimately had to settle for second.
Monras quickest in Barcelona testing

Miki Monras topped the opening day of Formula 2 winter testing at Barcelona on Tuesday. The 19-year-old Spaniard, who was fourth in this year’s championship, set the morning pace in 1m35.950s, which remained the benchmark for the rest of the day and was 0.142s quicker than another series regular, Mihai Marinescu. “I really enjoyed the test day,” said Monras.

Malvern added to F2 test line-up

Scott Malvern is the latest driver to confirm his participation in next week’s Formula 2 test at Barcelona. Malvern, 22, has been awarded a place at the test as part of his prize for winning the British Formula Ford Championship this year, and is keen on a move into the series in 2012.
GP circuits for Formula 2 in 2012

Formula 2 will visit five current grand prix venues in its fourth season of competition, after an eight-event calendar was approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council. The 2012 schedule will also feature two new races, with the series set for maiden visits to Paul Ricard in July and the Hungaroring in September. It will open, as was the case this year, with Silverstone in April, before moving on to the Algarve – where F2 raced in 2010 – the Nurburgring, Spa-Francorchamps and Brands Hatch.

Steele to test F2 car at Barcelona

British driver Aaron Steele will take part in the official Formula 2 test at Barcelona later this month. Steele, 22, a former McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award finalist, will test as part of his prize for winning the MSV F3 Cup this year
