Vietoris to miss Barcelona

Christian Vietoris will miss this weekend’s GP2 round at Barcelona because he is still suffering from bad headaches as a result of a heavy crash at the Istanbul season-opener. The German’s spot at Racing Engineering has been taken by the experienced Portuguese driver Alvaro Parente. “It makes no sense for me to do it [race this weekend],” Vietoris, who is also competing in the DTM with the Persson Mercedes squad, told AUTOSPORT.
Ceccon replaces Rigon at Coloni

Italian teenager Kevin Ceccon will become the youngest driver in this year’s GP2 line-up when he races for Coloni Motorsport in the next two meetings at Barcelona and Spa. Ceccon, 17, replaces Davide Rigon, who is sidelined after a leg-breaking crash last time out at Istanbul
Rigon to have surgery on leg

Coloni driver Davide Rigon will undergo surgery tomorrow in Istanbul after being diagnosed with multiple fractures to his tibia and fibula following his crash in the GP2 sprint race this morning. Rigon hit the barriers on the pit straight in a clash with Trident’s Julian Leal, and though he initially managed to get himself out of the car unaided, he soon realised the extent of his injury and waited for medical assistance

Davide Rigon has been taken to hospital with suspected multiple fractures to his left foot and ankle after a crash in Sunday’s second GP2 race at Istanbul. The Italian was involved in a nasty accident when Julian Leal clipped the back of his car as he tried to switch from the inside to the outside while trying to pass Rigon on the pitstraight. The crash sent Rigon’s Coloni car into the pitwall and then across the track, and a piece of suspension went through the chassis, causing the injury to his foot
Coletti hangs on for GP2 victory

Stefano Coletti survived a one-lap dash to the flag after a safety car period to win the second GP2 race of the weekend at Istanbul on Sunday. The Trident driver appeared to have the race in hand after passing pole-sitter Dani Clos (Racing Engineering) at the start of lap seven. He was cruising to victory when the safety car was needed just four laps from the finish after Julian Leal and Davide Rigon clashed in spectacular fashion on the start/finish straight

Valsecchi handed grid penalty

Davide Valsecchi has been handed a 10-place grid penalty for the GP2 season opener at Istanbul Park. The Italian qualified eighth fastest on Friday, but he was responsible for one of the three red flags during the session when his car stopped on the back straight. Valsecchi then slowly rolled his AirAsia car backwards down the track towards the Turn 9/10 chicane, before eventually getting the car re-fired.
Aleshin ruled out of Turkey event

Mikhail Aleshin has been ruled out for the remainder of the GP2 opener in Turkey following his crash during qualifying. The Carlin driver lost control of his car and crashed into the barriers at high speed during the grid-deciding session.
Grosjean takes pole despite spin

Romain Grosjean overcame a 360-degree spin in Istanbul Park’s famous Turn 8 to take pole position for the GP2 opener in Turkey. The DAMS driver engaged in a head-to-head battle for supremacy with Jules Bianchi (ART) in the first half of the session. The French pair exchanged places at the top of the times on several occasions, until Bianchi had to abandon his latest response when Davide Valsecchi stopped on track and brought out the red flags
Vietoris on top in GP2 practice

Christian Vietoris set the fastest time in the final seconds of GP2 free practice at Istanbul Park on Friday. The German was expected to be at a disadvantage at the start of this season, because he was the only frontrunner to skip the two Asia series rounds earlier this year.

Mikhail Aleshin will return to the Carlin team for the season-opening race of the GP2 Series in Turkey this weekend. The Russian secured a deal to race with Carlin during the 2011 season, but was forced to withdraw due to budgetary issues at the start of April.
Rigon fills Coloni GP2 seat

Davide Rigon has completed a deal to return to GP2 with Coloni this year. The Italian, who has taken Beijing Gouan and Anderlecht to Superleague Formula titles and has also been signed by Ferrari as a development driver, previously raced in GP2 with Trident in 2009. He joins Coloni after taking part in recent tests with the squad, and fills the gap alongside Michael Herck that was created when James Jakes left Coloni for a Dale Coyne Racing IndyCar seat following the GP2 Asia campaign.

Scuderia Coloni’s Michael Herck led the way in GP2 testing at the Barcelona circuit, on the final day of preparations ahead of the start of the season next month. The Belgian-Romanian driver posted a 1m29.608s, the quickest time of the two days of testing, to outpace Sam Bird by less then 0.030 seconds
Valsecchi fastest in Barcelona test

Davide Valsecchi topped the times on the first day of the final pre-season test at Barcelona, ahead of the start of the GP2 Series season in Turkey. The Team AirAsia driver finished as second quickest in the morning session but then raised his pace in the afternoon, finishing the day on top with a best time of 1m29.718s on a sunny day at the Circuit de Catalunya
Ericsson ends Silverstone test on top

Marcus Ericsson finished on top of the times on the second and final day of this week’s GP2 testing at Silverstone. On a much better day weather-wise, Ericsson’s 1m40.154s lap was enough to set the benchmark, the iSport driver moving to the top in the afternoon session after having wound up third in the morning.

GP2 Asia series champion Romain Grosjean continued with his strong form ahead of the start of the main series by topping the times on the opening day of pre-season testing at Silverstone. In cold, wet and windy conditions, the Frenchman finished with a time of 1m40.725s in the DAMS car, outpacing Arden’s Josef Kral by over half a second
