Superleague cancels Asian races too

Superleague Formula organisers have announced the cancellation of the Asian rounds of the series. The news comes less than a month after the series announced it had also cancelled its South American events. Superleague said it could not “reach terms” with Chinese local authorities.

Superleague organisers have announced the cancellation of all the South American rounds scheduled for next month. The Brazilian round will not go ahead after organisers received news from circuit bosses that Goiania will not be ready to host the scheduled race
Navarra test for Superleague

Superleague Formula is set to hold a two-day test at Navarra, Spain, on the final two days of August. The championship has held two rounds so far this season, visiting Assen in June and Zolder in July, but does not have another round planned until Goiania in Brazil at the start of October.

England’s Craig Dolby will start round two of the Superleague Formula Nations Cup from pole position after winning a dramatic rain-affected final against New Zealand’s Chris van der Drift. Rain fell just before and during the final, the climax of Superleague’s unique knock-out qualifying format, for which Dolby chose to run second on the road.
Doornbos switches to Team Japan

Robert Doornbos will switch to the championship-leading Team Japan car in time for this weekend’s Superleague Formula round at Zolder. The 29-year-old Dutchman raced the sister Team Netherlands car at the Assen season-opener, but the Atech Reid squad, which runs both outfits in the series, has elected to put him in the Japan car previously raced by Britain’s Duncan Tappy. “We had some problems at Assen with a coming together, which meant that unfortunately the car had too much damage to finish the race and we were unable to start in race two,” he said.

Smolensk round postponed

Superleague Formula has postponed its maiden trip to the Smolensk Ring until at least 2012 as the circuit will not be ready in time to host the series’ proposed September round. Superleague was due to be the first international championship to visit the new track on September 3-4, but received notification from senior track officials on Wednesday that this would not be possible.

Dolby claims Assen super final win

England’s Craig Dolby won the €100,000 super final in the opening round of Superleague Formula 2011 at Assen on Sunday, passing the Australia entry of John Martin to claim victory. Dolby, starting fourth on the grid, jumped up to second at the start, with Martin leaping into the lead as poleman Duncan Tappy (Japan) and Yelmer Buurman (Netherlands/PSV) made poor getaways.

Buurman wins wild Assen opener

Yelmer Buurman won a thrilling opening round of the Superleague Formula Nations Cup on home ground for the Netherlands at Assen. Buurman triumphed after an amazing duel with the other Netherlands-liveried car of Robert Doornbos, who had taken the lead when long-time front man Tristan Gommendy (France/Bordeaux) was forced out with a broken throttle cable.

Tristan Gommendy of the combined France/Bordeaux team beat New Zealand’s Earl Bamber to the first pole position of the new-look Superleague Formula Nations Cup at Assen in Holland. In the head-to-head shoot-out final, Gommendy was first across the line on a 1m26.313s, but Bamber could only manage a 1m26.745s, which was 0.432 seconds slower.

Vervisch gets Luxembourg seat

Frederic Vervisch will race for Team Luxembourg in Superleague Formula this year. The 24-year-old Belgian has confirmed his deal with the Atech-Reid-run outfit after replacing James Walker at Liverpool for the second half of the 2010 season and winning the Algarve superfinal and again at Ordos. Prior to competing in Superleague last year, Vervisch won German and Asian Formula 3 titles and took five podium finish in the US-based Atlantic Series
Jani gets Anderlecht drive
