Schumacher (Ralf) puzzled by slow pace

Ralf Schumacher says he was surprised by his struggles in DTM qualifying at Lausitz, and is not sure why he was so far off the pace. The six-time grand prix winner will start the third round of the season from 17th on the grid, leaving him on the back row while two of his HWA Mercedes team-mates (Paul di Resta and Bruno Spengler) share the front row of the grid. “The car behaved okay, I’m really surprised that I am that far back,” Schumacher told reporters on Saturday evening.

DTM officials have confirmed that a deal has been signed for China to host this year’s season finale in November, an event that had remained provisional until this weekend. Mike Rockenfeller continued his good form at Lausitz this weekend by topping the final DTM free practice session on Saturday morning, while David Coulthard also continued to shine by setting the third fastest time. Audi’s Rockenfeller took the top spot with just two minutes remaining, deposing Mercedes’ Paul di Resta, who had been the pace setter for a long time before that. Mike Rockenfeller set the pace for Audi in the first DTM free practice session at Lausitz on Friday. The German ended the session in the top spot having traded places with Timo Scheider on several occasions in the final half an hour, after Rockenfeller’s 2008-spec Audi had been fastest for most of the session before that. Reigning champion Scheider, who is hoping that he now has enough of an understanding of this year’s new tyre compound to make up for a tough start to the season, eventually had to settle for second, while Maro Engel led a late-session charge from several of the ’08 Mercedes to take third

Di Resta to sit out Turkey practice

Paul di Resta will sit out driving duties for Force India at this weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix because the team wants to evaluate new car developments with its race drivers. The Scotsman had been scheduled to take part in FP1 at most venues this year, but the introduction of new parts – including front wing and tweaked wing mirrors – has left the team preferring to use regulars Vitantonio Liuzzi and Adrian Sutil in Istanbul. Speaking about the decision, di Resta said: “It was a late call from the team but I completely understand their decision as there are some new upgrades coming through this race that really need the drivers’ and the team’s attention.
