Tomczyk heads warm-up
September 18th, 2011
Martin Tomczyk rebounded from a disastrous DTM qualifying session by setting the pace in warm-up at Oschersleben. The championship leader, who will start back in 14th place, had been a consistent top-six runner all session after drastic overnight set-up changes to his Phoenix Audi, and went to the top of the timesheets in 1m23.551s in the final minute. His lap knocked the Abt A4 car of Mattias Ekstrom off the top spot by 0.023s, with Filipe Albuquerque completing an all-Audi top three in his Rosberg-run car.

Molina on shock Oschersleben pole
September 17th, 2011
Miguel Molina claimed his first DTM pole position by the narrowest of margins at Oschersleben as he beat Bruno Spengler by just a thousandth of a second. The Spaniard, who has not even scored a point this season, had never previously qualified higher than fourth, but took his old-spec Abt Audi to the top spot in a time of 1m22.317s. Spengler, the last man to set a time in Q4, was slower than Molina in sector one, but pulled back almost all the time in the remainder of the lap and only just missed out

Mercedes has launched the car that it will field in next year’s DTM, the C-Class Coupe. The unveiling, which took place at the Frankfurt Motor Show, comes less than 24 hours after rival manufacturer Audi took the covers off its A5 DTM and was made by Mercedes Formula 1 drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg, motorsport vice-president Norbert Haug and board chairman Dr Dieter Zetsche. As is the case with the Audi and BMW machines already revealed, the C-Coupe is built to the DTM’s new 2012 technical regulations that aim to primarily reduce costs by 40 per cent and improve driver safety levels significantly.

Audi has unveiled the car that will carry its hopes in next year’s DTM ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show. The A5 DTM is based on a coupe body and surrounds a spec safety cell, in line with the championship’s all-new technical regulations that will be introduced next year. Like the BMW M3 DTM, which was revealed in July, the A5 features heavily reduced rear aerodynamics compared to the A4 that it replaces – despite a noticeably larger rear wing – as well as far less sophisticated electronics and bigger wheels and tyres than previously

Haug: Spengler can recover
September 3rd, 2011
Mercedes motorsport chief Norbert Haug believes that Bruno Spengler can still achieve a top result in Sunday’s DTM race at Brands Hatch, despite starting down in eighth position. Championship leader Spengler qualified sixth, but will start eighth due to a two-place grid penalty for using tyres not allocated to him during morning practice. Haug, however, does not believe that the form of qualifying – in which Mike Rockenfeller put his Abt Audi on pole position – will be carried through to the race.

Bruno Spengler has been docked two places on the grid for this weekend’s DTM race at Brands Hatch after falling foul of the championship’s tyre regulations. The series leader was found to have breached articles 25.2 and 25.3 of the sporting regulations during Saturday morning’s free practice session by “using a complete set of slick tyres that were not allocated to this car”. The HWA Mercedes driver, who was also fined 5,000 euros for the offence, will have the penalty applied after the completion of qualifying, meaning that it won’t affect his progress during the session.
