Tomczyk plays down title talk
June 6th, 2011
Martin Tomczyk has insisted that winning the DTM title is not his primary aim this year, despite closing to within three points of series leader Bruno Spengler thanks to his Spielberg win last weekend. The German, whose victory was not only the first for an old-spec Audi in the DTM, but also Phoenix Racing’s first since 2000, had also been on the podium last time out at Zandvoort and has been among the most impressive drivers this year
Engel: Spielberg penalty unfair
June 6th, 2011
Maro Engel believes that his drive-through penalty at the Spielberg DTM round was unfairly awarded. The German was penalised after race officials adjudged him to have caused an avoidable accident by spinning Edoardo Mortara out of third place at the first corner of the race. Engel, who had started from a season’s best sixth place in his 2008-spec Mucke Mercedes, finished 14th, but would have been at least sixth if the time lost to the penalty had not been a factor
Tomczyk takes Spielberg victory
June 5th, 2011
Martin Tomczyk took his first DTM win for nearly two years with a faultless performance at Spielberg. The German made a great getaway from pole position and stayed in front for most of the way – only dropping back while differing pit strategies came into play during the middle of the race. Significantly, it was Phoenix Racing’s first DTM victory for 11 years and its first as an Audi team.
Tomczyk tops Spielberg warm-up
June 5th, 2011
Martin Tomczyk continued his domination of the Spielberg DTM weekend by setting the fastest time in warm-up on Sunday morning. The Phoenix Audi driver, who will start the race from pole position, set the pace in 1m26.285s with a lap seven minutes from the end of the session, enough to put him ahead of Maro Engel’s Mucke Mercedes by a scant 0.007s. Championship leader Bruno Spengler was third fastest in his HWA Mercedes, the Canadian being the quickest driver in a newer 2009-spec car during the session.
Tomczyk on wet Spielberg pole
June 4th, 2011
Martin Tomczyk took his first DTM pole position for nearly two years with a brilliant display of wet-weather driving in qualifying at Spielberg. The Phoenix Audi driver was the third of four drivers to go out in Q4, and his 1m40.001s lap not only knocking Oliver Jarvis off the top spot, but also proving good enough to take pole. It is the first time since the Zandvoort event in 2009 that an old-spec car has taken pole position, Tomczyk’s time of 1m40.001s being 0.352s quicker than that of Abt driver Jarvis.
Tomczyk quickest at Spielberg
June 4th, 2011
Martin Tomczyk set the quickest time in the second free practice session for the DTM round at Spielberg, continuing the domination of the older-spec Audis at the former Austrian Grand Prix venue. Tomczyk’s 1m25.660s lap was just 0.006s quicker than Miguel Molina’s best effort as Audi machinery filled the top eight places.
Mortara tops first practice
June 3rd, 2011
Edoardo Mortara topped a largely wet opening free practice session for this weekend’s third DTM round of the season at the newly-reopened Spielberg circuit in Austria.
Spengler tops Spielberg test
June 2nd, 2011
Bruno Spengler continued his fine 2011 form by topping DTM testing at Spielberg ahead of this weekend’s round at the Austrian circuit. The Canadian’s pace-setting lap of 1m25.934s came late in the afternoon session, and was enough to put him ahead of his HWA Mercedes team-mate Jamie Green by 0.046s.
New Audi set to run in June

Audi’s 2012 DTM machine could run as early as next month, according to head of Audi Sport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich.
Spengler: Radio problem cost me win
May 16th, 2011
Bruno Spengler blamed a radio problem for his defeat to Mike Rockenfeller at the second DTM race of the season at Zandvoort. The Canadian had led the opening stint of the race after starting from pole position in his HWA Mercedes.
Rockenfeller delighted with victory
May 16th, 2011
Mike Rockenfeller described his maiden DTM victory as “a massive load taken off my chest,” after triumphing at Zandvoort last Sunday. On only his second start since being promoted to an Abt-run, 2009-spec A4 by Audi, Rockenfeller controlled the pace at the front after taking the lead, and was a delighted man afterwards. “Honestly, I didn’t expect it to take this long,” he said.
Rockenfeller takes first DTM victory
May 15th, 2011
Mike Rockenfeller took his maiden DTM victory with a fabulous drive in the second round of the championship at Zandvoort. The Abt Audi driver took advantage of a slow getaway by Jamie Green to move into second by the time the pack reached the first corner, and vaulted ahead of early leader Bruno Spengler at the opening round of pitstops. With a number of different strategies being employed by various teams, it was not until lap 30 when Rockenfeller was handed the lead, but by that stage he had established a 2.5-second lead over Spengler and the Canadian’s HWA Mercedes team-mate Green.
Scheider heads Zandvoort warm-up
May 15th, 2011
Timo Scheider headed the timesheets in warm-up for the DTM round at Zandvoort, despite a late trip through the gravel. The Abt Audi driver had already set his session-topping time of 1m32.951s when he ran wide at the fast Scheivlak corner, filling his car with gravel and forcing him into the pits with a couple of minutes still to run.
Ekstrom confident of strong race
May 14th, 2011
Mattias Ekstrom is confident of a strong race performance in Sunday’s DTM round at Zandvoort, despite qualifying in a poor 16th spot.
Spengler on pole again in Holland
May 14th, 2011
Bruno Spengler made it two pole positions from two DTM races in 2011 as he topped qualifying at Zandvoort. The HWA Mercedes driver had not been quickest in any of the first three parts of qualifying, but dug deep when he needed to in Q4 and produced a 1m31.805s that would not be beaten. At the time of Spengler going top, his team-mate Jamie Green was the only man still to complete his single Q4 lap, but the Briton, who had been in the top two in every part of qualifying, did not quite have the speed to challenge and wound up 0.135s adrift of Spengler’s time.
Scheider quickest in practice again
May 14th, 2011
Timo Scheider again headed the timesheets in the second free practice session ahead of Zandvoort’s DTM round. The Abt Audi driver had not featured near the front at all during the 90-minute session, but, after venturing onto the track for a low-fuel run with just a few minutes remaining, set the pace in 1m31.718s – a second faster than his Friday pace.
Scheider leads Audi practice sweep
May 13th, 2011
Timo Scheider set the pace in the first DTM free practice session at Zandvoort, leading an all-Audi clean sweep of the top four positions. The Abt driver completed just 22 laps during the 90-minute session, the fourth lowest total of the entire field
Ekstrom critical of Spengler’s driving
May 2nd, 2011
Mattias Ekstrom was critical of Bruno Spengler’s driving tactics during the opening round of the DTM at Hockenheim. The Abt Audi driver beat Spengler off the line, but lost the lead to his rival as the Canadian drove outside the track limits at turn one to complete his move and re-take a lead he would not relinquish all afternoon. “We had a car to be in contention for victory – particularly after my good start,” said Ekstrom.
Spengler wins at Hockenheim
May 1st, 2011
Bruno Spengler opened the DTM season with a commanding victory from pole position at Hockenheim.
Spengler on Hockenheim pole
April 30th, 2011
Bruno Spengler banished the dramas of morning practice to take a brilliant pole position for the opening DTM race of the season at Hockenheim. The Canadian, who failed to complete a flying lap during the morning, had a new front splitter fitted for qualifying and was in inspired form as he set the fastest time in Q3 to ease into the single-lap, pole-deciding Q4 with Ralf Schumacher, Timo Scheider and Mattias Ekstrom. Ekstrom, who had been the slowest of the four drivers that made it into Q4, looked set for pole as the Abt Audi driver went around in 1m34.402s.
