Coulthard keen to race on in 2012

David Coulthard says that the addition of new manufacturers in the DTM increases the possibility of him staying in the championship for the long-term. BMW has already confirmed that it will return to the series in 2012, and several other manufacturers such as Opel and Nissan have been linked to joining the grid. Representatives from the DTM met with several Asian manufacturers following the championship’s season finale in Shanghai in November, and it is expected that the 2012 season will kick off with at least four manufacturers competing.
Haug: Success comes from open spirit

Coulthard will not take top Mercedes

Mercedes has admitted that the possibility of David Coulthard being promoted to a top car in the DTM is not being discussed for 2011. Both the manufacturer and the 13-time grand prix winner have said they are keen for their relationship to continue into next season. But Coulthard has always stated that he does not want to move up to a front-line car when there are other drivers in the team more deserving of the chance.

Rankings: Di Resta leads DTM drivers

Paul di Resta will end 2010 as the top DTM driver in the Castrol Rankings after sealing the title at Shanghai last weekend. The AMG Mercedes driver’s second place in the season finale was not only enough to give him the championship, but it also moved him up a spot to 44th in the Castrol Rankings. His British compatriot Gary Paffett beat him to victory and sealed second in the championship at the same time, elevating him six places to 57th and making him the biggest climber in top 100.

Shanghai track set for more tweaks

DTM organisers plan to carry out further work on the Shanghai street track overnight following the number of crashes in qualifying on Saturday. All four segments of qualifying were red-flagged at some point due to crashes. Drivers complained in particular of how slippery the white lines on the track were, and the lack of grip due to the surface at Turns 1, 2 and 3.
Spengler admits ‘risks’ will be required

DTM championship leader Bruno Spengler says he will have to take risks in Sunday’s title decider after his disastrous qualifying. The Mercedes driver crashed in morning practice and again in Q1 on Saturday, leaving him 17th on the grid while his title pursuers – Paul di Resta and Gary Paffett – share the front row. Paul di Resta topped the second DTM free practice session at Shanghai on Saturday morning, while championship leader Bruno Spengler damaged his car in the closing stages. Spengler, who leads Mercedes team-mate di Resta by three points heading into this weekend’s title showdown, clipped the wall with his right-front corner at the beginning of the long final turn with 15 minutes remaining. The Canadian trailed back to the pits, while the session was red-flagged to allow marshals to clear the track of debris
Shanghai pit entry altered after crash

The controversial pit entrance at the Shanghai DTM street circuit has been modified following Maro Engel’s huge crash in practice on Friday. Engel hit the beginning of the pitwall head on after he clipped the inside wall at the previous corner.

Martin Tomczyk topped the first DTM free practice of the weekend on the streets of Shanghai, while a massive accident for Maro Engel brought the session to an early finish. Tomczyk only started to feature towards the top of the times with just over 20 minutes remaining
BMW to recruit an external driver

BMW is planning to recruit one driver from outside its existing roster for its return to DTM in 2012. The German manufacturer will prioritise its currently-contracted drivers, but its motorsport boss Mario Theissen says there will probably be a spare seat. “We have started to think about our drivers,” he told AUTOSPORT
Dunlop to end DTM tyre supply deal

Dunlop will stop supplying tyres for the DTM at the end of this year, the series announced on Friday. The tyre manufacturer has been the exclusive supplier to the German series since it was relaunched in 2000.
