Stoner dominates opening practice

Casey Stoner proved his surprise decision to retire at the end of the 2012 MotoGP season had done little to dim his pace or hunger by going fastest in the opening practice session at Le Mans. Stoner went clear early on and rarely looked troubled thereafter, and for half the session was almost one second clear of the field. When others, chiefly his Honda stable-mate Dani Pedrosa, did close in, the Australian went back out and lowered his benchmark further, ending the session 0.587 seconds clear of Pedrosa.

Three-time V8 Supercars champion Craig Lowndes reckons Casey Stoner could make a successful transition to the Australian touring car series if he chose to do so. Stoner announced on Thursday that he would retire from MotoGP at the end of the 2012 season, after just seven years at the sport’s top level. The 2007 and ’11 MotoGP title-winner tested Lowndes’ V8 series Triple Eight Holden last winter, impressing Lowndes, and acknowledged during his MotoGP retirement announcement that he was open to racing in V8s in the longer-term future.

Rossi aiming for further step at Le Mans

Valentino Rossi says the top six, rather than a repeat of his 2011 podium, will be Ducati’s main target at MotoGP’s forthcoming French Grand Prix. The Italian scored his only rostrum of the season at the Le Mans circuit last year, but he insists this year’s focus is on making incremental progress – and therefore seeking only to better his seventh-place finish at Estoril. “Le Mans is another place where the weather can be challenging, particularly at this time of year, but it’s also the track where I had my best result with the Ducati last year,” Rossi said.

Ducati has complete faith in Rossi

Ducati technical chief Filippo Preziosi says the team still has complete faith in rider Valentino Rossi and his crew chief Jeremy Burgess, despite the Italian squad losing further ground at the start of the 2012 MotoGP campaign. Rossi and Burgess have yet to come close to replicating the success they achieved at Honda and Yamaha in Ducati colours, with the seven-time MotoGP champion only taking a single podium finish in 2011. This year Rossi has so far appeared even less competitive than at the end of last season, but Preziosi said Ducati remained confident that making its bike suit Rossi’s style was the best route to success

Ducati expecting new engine for US GP

Ducati expects to introduce a complete new engine package for the United States Grand Prix at Laguna Seca in July, as it bids to tackle the driveability issues that its riders believe are at the heart of its tough start to the 2012 MotoGP season. Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden have suggested that the Ducati is currently incapable of making use of all the power its 1000cc engine delivers, and that a reduction in power would actually make the bike easier to handle and therefore more competitive

Hayden bemoans electronics glitch

May 6th, 2012

Nicky Hayden says a defective electronics system was the cause of his struggles in MotoGP’s third round of the season at Estoril. In contrast to Ducati stablemate Valentino Rossi, who took his year’s best finish of seventh, Hayden was rarely in contention for the top 10 and ended up a distant 11th, more than one minute behind race-winner Casey Stoner. Having beaten Rossi in the previous two races, Hayden explained that an electrical glitch had sometimes left him without effective engine braking or power, resulting in a ruined and uncomfortable race

Stoner admits pressure almost told

Casey Stoner says he was lucky to hang on to MotoGP victory at Estoril as huge pressure from Jorge Lorenzo exacerbated his own struggles with chattering. Honda rider Stoner blazed away from the field in the opening stages, opening up a lead of 1.4 seconds after just three laps, but was then gradually reeled in by Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo. Stoner attributed that pattern to huge chattering woes suffered during the race, but said changing his riding style helped ease the issue and allowed him to keep Lorenzo behind him for the final laps.
