Lorenzo fastest as Stoner misses test

Jorge Lorenzo marked his return to the track after last year’s injury with the fastest time in the first pre-season MotoGP test at Sepang, while reigning champion Casey Stoner sat out the session with back pain. Stoner aggravated an old back injury while warming up before going out this morning
Frijns graduates to FR3.5 with Fortec

Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup champion Robin Frijns will graduate to Formula Renault 3.5 with Fortec Motorsport. The Dutchman earned a 500,000 Euro scholarship for his 2011 championship success. Frijns tested with Fortec’s outgoing FR3.5 car at Motorland Aragon during the final test of 2011

Stoner fears backlash from rivals

Casey Stoner believes that the humiliation of the defeats suffered by Yamaha and Ducati in 2011 will make both manufacturers far tougher to beat in the upcoming MotoGP season. The world champion, who was speaking at the launch of Honda’s RCV 213V in Kuala Lumpur, dominated last year’s title race, winning 10 times and scoring 90 points more than his closest rival, Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo. However, with sweeping rule changes having come into play over the winter, including an increase in engine capacity from 800 to 1000cc, Stoner said that he will need to be on top form to fend off the threat posed by the likes of Lorenzo and Ducati’s lead rider Valentino Rossi.

BMW reveals first DTM livery

BMW has unveiled the first of the liveries it will run during its DTM campaign this year. One of the six M3 DTMs will run in the green and blue colours of its backer Castrol EDGE, rather than the traditional BMW corporate livery of the past 20 years. DTM champion Martin Tomczyk and long-time Mercedes driver Bruno Spengler have joined BMW for the coming season to partner long-time factory drivers Andy Priaulx, Augusto Farfus, Joey Hand and Dirk Muller, all of whom are switching over from GT racing.
Ordonez joins Greaves for Le Mans

Lucas Ordonez has joined Greaves Motorsport for this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours and Le Mans Series. The 26-year-old Spaniard will drive one of Greaves’ Nissan-engined Zytek prototypes as the British squad bids to win the LMS and repeat its LMP2 class victory at Le Mans. Ordonez, a graduate of the Playstation GT Academy, will share the Zytek with Martin and Alex Brundle at Le Mans, while Tom Kimber-Smith and Brundle Jr will be his co-drivers in the LMS.

Lapierre: Toyota was a better option

Nicolas Lapierre says he felt Toyota was a better option for his sportscar career than a potential Peugeot seat even before the French manufacturer withdrew from Le Mans racing. Lapierre won last year’s Sebring 12 Hours in an ORECA-run Peugeot, and admitted that he had talks with Peugeot over joining its works team. But he was ultimately announced as part of the driving strength for Toyota’s return to sportscars’ top class.

Ducati plays down test expectations

Ducati will be content just to be within 1.5 seconds of the pace in the first MotoGP test of 2012 next week, according to team boss Vito Guareschi. The Italian squad is starting from a clean sheet with its 2012 bike after a win-less ’11 season, and Guareschi warned that he is not expecting immediate results.
Pasini in Speed Master MotoGP move

Mattia Pasini will step up to MotoGP with the Speed Master squad’s CRT programme this year. The seat had been earmarked for former factory Kawasaki MotoGP rider Anthony West, before the Australian announced yesterday that he had been unable to raise a sufficient budget. Pasini was a race winner in 125cc and 250cc, but the 26-year-old Italian has had two difficult seasons in Moto2 over the past two years

West loses Speed Master MotoGP seat

Anthony West has announced that he has been unable to find the funding to return to MotoGP with Speed Master and is now set to retire from racing. The former factory Kawasaki rider had been in line to join graduating Moto2 squad Speed Master to race its CRT bike in MotoGP this year, but announced on his Facebook page today that the deal had fallen through.

Ireland bosses want ‘big’ event

Circuit of Ireland Rally director Bobby Willis has vowed to bring Ireland’s oldest and most famous motorsport event back to life when it runs as an Intercontinental Rally Challenge round in April. The April 6-7 event was officially launched in Belfast on Thursday, with confirmation that the rally will start with a stage around the shipyards from which the Titanic was launched 100 years ago in April. After what’s certain to be a huge crowd-pleaser in front of the famous Harland and Wolff cranes, the crews will face a further 15 stages centred around Armagh

Formula Renault 3.5 race winner Albert Costa’s prospects of securing a drive in 2012 have suffered a setback in recent weeks owing to an off-track ‘managerial’ dispute. The Catalan, winner of the final race of 2011 and formerly an FIA Institute Academy young driver, expressed his frustration over the setback that has left him attempting to piece together a new deal from scratch.
