Hanninen takes first asphalt victory
April 16th, 2011
Juho Hanninen claimed his first win on asphalt in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge with a brilliant final day surge on Rally Islas Canarias. The reigning series champion beat his Skoda team-mate Jan Kopecky by just 1.5 seconds, while Thierry Neuville took his second IRC podium with a very close third in the Kronos-run Belgium Luxembourg Peugeot. Kopecky had stayed just ahead of a very close lead pack through Friday’s first leg, but Hanninen stepped up his pace this morning and grabbed the lead
Hanninen jumps into narrow lead
April 16th, 2011
Reigning Intercontinental Rally Challenge champion Juho Hanninen leads Skoda team-mate Jan Kopecky by just 0.1 seconds with two stages of a thrilling Rally Islas Canarias remaining. Thierry Neuville and Freddy Loix are also still in contention after the first loop of two Saturday stages. Neuville briefly took first position on SS9 San Mateo (by 0.9s), as Kronos’ young Belgian continued to show the best form of his career so far
Kopecky retains overnight lead
April 15th, 2011
Jan Kopecky holds a 5.7-second lead over the extremely impressive Thierry Neuville going into the final day of Rally Islas Canarias. Tonight should have seen two stages run in darkness, but the volume of spectators on SS8 Tejada was declared unsafe and the stage was cancelled, meaning SS7 Valleseco was the extent of the evening’s action. Kopecky (Skoda) was fastest on the stage, allowing him to slightly extend his lead as fellow works Skoda driver Freddy Loix slipped back from second to fourth.
Kopecky stays ahead in Canarias
April 15th, 2011
Jan Kopecky continues to lead Rally Islas Canarias at the end of the second of three loops of stages on the opening day. The lead fight remains very close, with Kopecky just 3.1 seconds ahead of fellow Skoda driver Freddy Loix, and Thierry Neuville (Peugeot Belgium) and Juho Hanninen (Skoda) only a further second back. Neuville felt he had lost confidence in the increasingly foggy conditions as the rally headed into the evening, while Loix was certain he could have gone quicker on SS6 had he not encountered P-G Andersson’s Proton, which was struggling with a puncture
Kopecky heads tight Canarias fight
April 15th, 2011
Jan Kopecky holds a narrow early lead after the first loop of stages on the Rally Islas Canarias, round two of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge. The works Skoda driver is just 0.4 seconds ahead of Kronos Peugeot’s rising young star Thierry Neuville.
Magalhaes tops shakedown
April 14th, 2011
Bruno Magalhaes has gone fastest in shakedown for Rally Islas Canarias, the second round of the 12-event Intercontinental Rally Challenge season. Driving a Peugeot 207 Super 2000, the Portuguese was two tenths of a second quicker than Norwegian Skoda Fabia driver Andreas Mikkelsen over the 2.55-kilometre practice course south of the rally base in Las Palmas. “For sure this is a very good sign but shakedown is shakedown and the race is the race,” Magalhaes told AUTOSPORT
Atkinson hopeful on Proton progress
April 5th, 2011
Proton driver Chris Atkinson says there is more speed to come from the British-built Satria Neo S2000 ahead of this year’s Intercontinental Rally Challenge. Atkinson took a convincing win on last weekend’s Asia-Pacific Rally Championship opener in Malaysia – collecting his first international victory along the way. The 31-year-old Australian driver enjoyed a trouble-free run through Malaysia following the MEM team’s improvements to the Satria in recent months.
Date change for Rally of Scotland
March 31st, 2011
The penultimate round of the Intercontinental Rally Championship will now take place one week earlier than previously scheduled, it was confirmed today. The RACMSA Rally of Scotland was due to take place from 14-16 October but will now move one week forward to 7-9 October after a further update to the calendar by series officials. The move follows repeated requests from parties in Scotland associated with the running of the event, who cited an insufficient number of volunteer personnel being available for the 14-16 October weekend as a major contributory factor.

Mikkelsen’s first Italian outing will be on the Rally dell’ Adriatic in Ancona.
Gardemeister picks Skoda, Hankook
March 9th, 2011
Toni Gardemeister will use a Hankook-shod Skoda for his return to full-time international rallying in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge this season. The long-time factory World Rally Championship driver announced last month that he had formed his own team under the TGS Worldwide banner and had secured the funding for a full IRC programme. He has now confirmed his technical package for the season, and that he will contest a further eight rounds of the series – in which only drivers’ best seven scores count
Mikkelsen wins Corsica test event
March 7th, 2011
Skoda UK’s Andreas Mikkelsen scored a comfortable win at the weekend as he used Corsican regional event the Ronde de la Giraglia as a warm-up for the Intercontinental Rally Challenge’s forthcoming asphalt rounds. The Norwegian’s IRC title bid got off to a bad start when he crashed out on the opening round in Monte Carlo in January. With the IRC’s next four rounds in Spain, Corsica, Ukraine and Ypres all asphalt events, Mikkelsen said contesting the national-level rally had restored his confidence ahead of the championship resuming next month with Rally Islas Canarias
Delecour willing to do more rallies
February 10th, 2011
Francois Delecour has indicated that he would like to participate in more Intercontinental Rally Challenge events this year after his positive return to the sport in last month’s Rallye Monte Carlo. The 48-year-old ran as high as second in an Enjolras Sport Peugeot 207 on the second day of the event, after making the correct decision on tyres as heavy snow caught out some of the more fancied runners
Gardemeister sets up IRC team
February 8th, 2011
Former factory World Rally Championship driver Toni Gardemeister has formed his own team for the 2011 Intercontinental Rally Challenge season. Gardemeister has not yet announced what car the new TGS Worldwide Ou squad will run or which events he will contest, but had hinted during last month’s Monte Carlo Rally that he would be able to make a fully-fledged comeback this season. “TGS is a new brand in motorsport, but is based on many years of experience,” said Gardemeister
